...Summary: Literacy Narrative ENG Composition-115 Dr. Professor Sunanda Vaidya February 04, 2015 “Facing Poverty with a Rich Girl’s Habits”, is a literacy narrative of a Korean girl called Suki who had to adapt and immigrate to the United States when her father, a very well established business man had to file for bankruptcy. Bankruptcy is illegal and punishable in Korea. Therefore, Suki’s entire family had no choice but to immigrate. Moving to America was a huge challenge for Suki as she had to habituate to living standards she was could not fathom. For example, she had to get used to living in a crammed place much different from the mansion she once lived in. She had to get accustomed to living a life void of all the luxuries she was used to such as: having a maid, a governess and being chauffeured to school. The move to The United States made her realize things she had never thought about such as: the color of her skin… yellow. Furthermore, she was referred to as a “F.O.B” because she was a new immigrant who was incapable of communicating in English. In her English as a Second Language class, Suki got the opportunity to communicate with other Korean-speaking classmates. However, she quickly realized she did not have much in common with the other Korean kids. Her English class consisted of kids who belonged to poor families who left Korea due to the discrimination they faced because of class hierarchy, education level, family background and financial status...

...Facing Poverty With A Rich Girl’s Habits By: Kim Darrell Carter Lindsay Ludvigsen English Composition 115 April 20, 2014 The essay tells about a family that was once rich and they went bankrupt overnight. Her father lost everything he had and everything that they owned. The author Kim is the voice throughout the story. She was mainly talking about herself so it is told as an autobiography. One of the most important points in the girls life is when she was in middle her father lost everything that mattered to them. She then moved to Queens, New York where she had difficulty adapting to the American culture since she was from Korea. She didn’t even know how to speak English. She watched “Three’s Company” in attempt to learn English. She also stated that attempting to learn English was more brutal than facing poverty with a rich girl’s habits and memories. At the age of 13 she had to take public transportation instead of being driven so that was something that she was not used to. She had to learn how to do her own laundry and also needed a tutor throughout school. I’ve learned that she is now learning to be independent and experiencing being a middle class teenager since she is no longer rich. The story’s genre and purpose is to show readers of this story the difference between the Korean culture and our American culture. The author also shows how hard it is for someone to adapt to such modest living conditions after living such a wealthy lifestyle...

WHY IS LAKE HURON SO POLLUTED? During the 18th and 19th centuries, industries and individuals often used rivers and lakes as garbage cans. Industrial effluent, raw sewage and animal carcasses would often be dumped into Lake Huron, without much thought of contamination. The major cause of the pollution in Lake Huron seems to be nonpoint source pollution. Nonpoint source pollution is another term for polluted runoff (Water Pollution in the Great Lakes). In the 20th century, this practice of dumping waste into the lake started changing as people became aware of the importance of clean water to their health. As more people and industries moved into the great lakes region, the more the rivers and lakes became polluted. Pollutants enter the great lakes in many different ways, but the entryways of pollutants are point source, nonpoint source,...

...Facing poverty with a rich girl’s habit Adele Strader Professor Chryst English Composition October 22, 2012 Facing poverty with a rich girl’s habit was written by Suki Kim and published in the New York Times on November 21, 2004. The most important point that Suki want to make was that (1) what we have in life can be taken away in an instant (2) do not go bankrupt in South Korea (3) that a person must adapt and endure through the trials and tribulations in their life and (4) that no matter what you have or don’t’ have in life you must always be true to yourself. Some of the other main points in this story are that Suki’s father owned shipping, mining and hotel companies in South Korea and that the Kim family was millionaires who lived in a mansion on top of a hill surrounded by ponds, peacocks and orchards with chauffeurs and maids. They had lived in a society were money, education and family history dictated who you were and how you lived. “Gone in an instant was my small world, made possible by my father’s shipping company, mining business and hotels. In queens, most of my E.S.L. classmates came from our families who had escaped Korea’s ridge class hierarchy, one dictated by education level, family background and financial status”, (2004, pgs. 62-63). Suki’s family has to flee South Korea because her father went bankrupt and in South Korea bankruptcy is a crime punishable by jail time so the family immigrated to New York. Arriving in Queens...

Identify the source (writer and title of essay) and state his or her most important point in your own words. The writer name is Suki Kim. Her title comes from her own life trials. This essay comes from her book that she wrote titled, “Interpreter.” She lets the reader knows that she was born with the silver spoon in her mouth. Her father had lost everything in bankruptcy and in her country that is a crime a person can be put into jail. So her family had come to Queens, New York. They didn’t have a penny to their names. One of the other main points in this essay to me was her first English words in junior high were F.O.B., short for fresh off the boat. ...The Public Needs To Know Christina D. Cromwell Professor Wayne Marshall English 115-English Composition January 31, 2015 People in the community, without typical means, should have a place to go for medical treatment just like everyone else. Unemployment and no insurance should not be what keeps people from getting the proper medical treatment. The new free clinic opening in our community will be available for adults and children who do not have traditional means of obtaining medical treatment. There will be several doctors on site with a wide range of specialties. Many have practices focusing on certain types of medical problems and some who can assist with any general issues. In some cases, patients may have to visit doctors off site. Because we are aware that some patients may not have the means to get to other areas, we will provide a shuttle service on preassigned days for this very reason. Doctors are volunteering their knowledge as well as their time to raise awareness and help those in the community in which some of them grew up in. We are aware that examination and knowledge is but a portion of what is needed. For this reason, we have partnered with some local pharmacies who will provide medication at a substantial discount and even free of charge in some cases. Patients will be informed of everything every step of the way and be given the same assistance as if they were paying customers. Each new patient will complete a short questionnaire informing...

...Assignment 1 Summary and Response - Week 1 Bari Williams Jr. Eng. 115 English Composition Dr. Roger Fontana April 16, 2016 “Facing Poverty with a Rich Girl’s Habits” by Suki Kim, was about a young lady who moved from South Korea to the United States. She also pointed out how differently American culture was from her own. She is trying to transition her life from being wealthy to poor, being raised on a “hilltop mansion with an orchard and a pond and peacocks” to a “two-family brownstone in Woodside” which was owned by family friends. Her world came crashing down when her father went bankrupt, and in her country that is punishable by jail time. Kim and her family fled to America penniless. This was hard due to the fact that her and her family were used to living a catered life with chauffeurs and butlers. The writer’s purpose of this summary is talking about Suki Kim “Facing Poverty with a Rich Girl’s Habits. Another purpose explains how she discuss the language affecting on her fitting in on society, in Queens, New York. The Genre in this case, in some’s opinion can be literary. I for one feel that she is telling readers about going from rich to poor. Her main audience would be someone who might’ve experience poverty, or even live a wealthy lifestyle. I also believe that her audience could possibly be young, from another country. In this summary the tone and attitude setting is calm and compelling. She talks about growing up in a two family brownstone house, crammed but in...

...Questions: How and why do the workplace experiences of employees from non – English speaking backgrounds differ from other workers? How can, and should, should actor respond to this? How are these differences manifested, and responded to, in your own workplace? The workplace experiences of employees from Non–English Speaking Backgrounds (NESB) differ from other workers for a number of reasons. Employment opportunity is a primary reason why individuals emigrate to other countries (de Castro et al. 2006). While employment in a host country has benefits, immigrants often face considerable challenges as they learn and adjust to the norms and values of the host culture. In particular, immigrant workers may face the ‘‘double jeopardy’’ of dealing with stressors related to both working in a new country as well as to living in a new society (de Castro, Gilbert & Takeuchi 2008). Like other European countries, Australia is also a very attractive destination for migrant workers. Migrants have been part of Australian society and the Australian workforce since colonisation began in 1788. However the migrant population at the time was of a predominantly European background. It was from the mid-nineteen century when Chinese, Pacific Islander, Lebanese, Afghan, Indian and European migrants arrived and settled in Australia. Due to the gradual liberalisation of Australian immigration policies, the ethnic composition of Australian migrants has shifted significantly, bringing in migrants...

Lost thing is not big a problem. Once she flew from Korea, she lost everything such as home, friends, relation and wealth but she might satisfy now, because she has new friends, a new home, and a new job. Our forefather told me that “If you lost the things, it is not a problem, if you lost the ethic, it’s a problem, If you lost your health, it’s big a problem”. I agree with that.
