...Raina Brown Intro to Literary Genres 9/23/05 1.) Among the character in Every Day Use the older sibling Dee is the antagonist because she shows opposition towards the protagonist who is Maggie the younger sibling. Maggie is the protagonist because we sympathize with her for all that she has gone through. In the A&P Sammy who is the narrator is also the protagonist because he is the primary character in the story. The antagonist is the boss because his actions conflict with the protagonists desires and goals. The characters in I Stand Here Ironing Emily is the protagonist because she is the sick one, she is also the main character and we sympathize with her. The antagonist is the mother, because she concerns conflict with the mother. 2.) In the A&P the setting was in a grocery store on a hot summer day. In this reading it played a major role because it is where Sammy, the main character, worked and it is a public place where proper attire is needed, so the setting helps cause part of the conflict. In Every Day Use the setting was at the house in the middle of nowhere. It was a beat up house, the only thing that the mother could afford. The role it played was being the reason Dee moved out of the house. Other than that the setting had no major role in the narrative. The setting of I Stand Here Ironing was all over the place and it did not serve as a major role in the narrative. 3.) The plot of the A&P was a hot summer day, a teen boy was working in a grocery store. He saw...

...Module 5 English Composition II The Argument Abstract My father always told me that “Nothing in life is free”. For years I have always been weary when I was told something was free. I would have to double check and ask the question “Am I really getting this for “nothing”. Most of the time the answer was; “No”. The first time I remember dealing with this was buying my first car. It was a beautiful 1993 Ford Explorer, jet black, low miles, and it had a great stereo. The salesman had everything done and ready for me to sign. My father looked over the contract and noticed a “service fee” hidden in the price. According to the salesman, all service for the first three years I owned would be free. But of course the “free” service was paid for in advance. Today I am 37 years old, and there are still times I have to tell my father that he is right. At midnight on November 17, stores everywhere in America finally began selling the long awaited PlayStation 3, also known as the PS3. Across the country, people waited in line for hours, and even days in some cases, to get their hands on a PlayStation 3. In Kentucky, ardent gamers fired BB guns at people waiting in line in order to get to the PS3s first. Millions of Americans tried to get a PlayStation 3 on that first day; however Sony had only produced 400,000 of them. On average, an additional 100,000 PS3 systems have reached stores each week since November 17. They’ve been flying off the shelves as gamers rush to buy a PS3. The...

...Trevor Long Josh Tucker ENGL 1020 25 November 2014 No Harmful Intentions Doing the right thing in life can be harmful, even if it is the right thing to do, many people can be affected by these decisions. By doing the right thing it is always harmful to someone. Harm can be collected in multiple ways not only physically, but neglect and psychological harm can also be intended to be the right thing to do. Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun” both use their stories to represent how doing the right thing can be harmful by neglect, psychological and physical harm. The two stories are both written about the way people inside a community live and their rituals and routines ruin and affect peoples’ lives by doing what they believe is the right thing to do, but in other peoples eyes it is not the right thing to do. Both stories use many literary devices in their stories to show their true meanings. The literary devices known as character and setting explain important meaning on how the stories are structured and organized to make the organization feel as if they believe it is the right thing to do but is harmful to others. In Shirley Jacksons “The Lottery” shows a great amount of physical and psychological harm. A setting like many towns, there are banks, schools, Town Square, and homes of the villagers. Every year the small town gathers in the square for the lottery day. Groups of children run around gathering pockets and small mounds...

...Setting Analysis – A Soldier’s Home by Ernest Hemingway The short story Soldier's Home by Ernest Hemingway is a thought-provoking look into a man life that becomes a soldier, goes off to war and returns an entirely different man. There is much that is identifiable in this story, especially those who have served in the military. This story however leaves much to interpretation but it is written in such a way that the author allows you to really experience his emotions well throughout. My own interpretation; being a person who served in the military is that his experiences coming home are not all that uncommon, especially in the Vietnam era. The military changes many things about a person. Primarily it served to allow me to grow up and be accountable, amongst other things. The young man who entered the military was nothing like the man who returned home. I felt truly sorry for Krebs many times through this story. The young man enlisted in the Marines to help his country; in this process he became a man as he was subjected to the horrors of World War I. His life was changed so drastically that upon his return to this small town, his life no longer fits as it once did. Although there is no narration to suggest his life before or during the war, the symbols in the beginning chapters give some idea as to perhaps what life was like for Krebs. He goes from a Methodist college student, which suggests conformity to " [having] been at Belleau Wood, Soissons, the Champagne...

...Lizbeth Gerena Final Project- My Writing Portfolio English Comp. 101 Prof. Cody June 27, 2015 I have decided to enter writing assignments 1, 2, and 5 into my writing portfolio as a part of my final project. I chose these three specific essays because each essay relates to me in a unique way regarding my life experiences. I feel that I capture my audience’s attention in such a personal way that they desire to hear more. My personal writing comes from a vantage point about a particular subject in an expressive aim. The content of my writings are equipped for people who are more advanced in life; compared to those who haven’t had experience to support a family, finances, or particular employment. My writings apply to the expressive aim of writing and have comparable lacks. In my future writing processes, I plan to sum up my essays with less redundancy and more content. I learned to touch on the major points of my writings without presenting new information into my conclusions. While reviewing my essays, I realized that I continued to repeat the same errors but made the effort to not double speak when creating my words and thoughts. Given the corrections, I was able to make improvements to my writings so that they will have a continuous, but steady flow avoiding lessening the value of the subject at hand. Throughout the review process of my writing assignment 1, I was able to learn how to conduct APA Style within in my essays...

...Battle Royale In “Battle Royal,” Ellison uses details of setting to create the mood of horror and repulsion. The horror begins when the narrator listens to a conversation between his father and grandfather, as his grandfather lay on his death bed. “Son, after I’m gone I want you to keep up the good fight. I never told you, but our life is a war and I have been a traitor all my born days, a spy in the enemy’s country ever since I give up my gun back in the Reconstruction. Live with your head in the lion’s mouth. I want you to overcome ‘em with yeses, undermine ‘em with grins, agree ‘em to death and destruction, let ‘em swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open” (256). This statement had a great effect on the narrator, although he wasn’t quite sure what it meant. It set a sense of fear in him. “And whenever things went well for me I remember my grandfather and felt guilty and uncomfortable. It was as though I was carrying out his advice in spite of myself”(257). The narrator didn’t plan on taking his grandfather’s advice, and each time he found himself doing exactly that, it made him feel guilty. “I felt guilt that in some way I was doing something that was really against the wishes of the white folks” (257). This continued path of fear and hatred are carried out throughout the story. Ellison gives the reader the idea of hatred and horror when he sets the scene in the ballroom of the hotel. This is where the “Battle Royal” was to take place. The battle room was filled with...

...Carbohydrates are Killing Us Softly Thomas J. Engstrom Western Governors University WGU Student ID# 000529592 Carbohydrates are Killing Us Softly The nutritional dietary consumption of carbohydrates is between 55-75% for the vast majority of the global population as their main source of food intake and energy. And the general populous continues to be misinformed by government agencies regarding what a normal, healthy diet, should be, as well as what a balanced diet looks like. Eating a low-carb high-fat, or ketogenic, diet of high fat, adequate protein and low carbohydrates can provide many health benefits as compared to the alternative of an unhealthy diet. Research suggests that a ketogenic diet builds a healthier body than other diets because it will lead to weight loss, improved blood pressure, and reduce appetites. The ketogenic diet is the foundation for a healthy life. As noted by Dr. Eenfeldt (2014), The ketogenic diet has been referred to by different names, such as: the keto diet, low carb diet, low carb high fat (LCHF), and to some degree the Adkins Diet. The ketogenic diet is a well known diet for being associated with consuming a low amount of carbohydrates, a moderate amount of protein and high amount of fat, where the body produces ketones in the liver to be used as energy (Taubes, 2008). With a diet high in carbohydrates your body will produce glucose and insulin. Glucose is the easiest molecule for your body to convert and use as energy, so it will...

...WHAT I LIVED FOR is a gripping dissection of contemporary American politics and mores that reveals, among other lessons, how tight the hold the past has on the present, and how difficult it is for anyone— an individual or a city—to escape it. Corky Corcoran appears, on most surfaces, to be the American success story. A fourth generation Irish American, Corky has become a millionaire in various business ventures, a city councilman, and a friend of some of the most powerful people in the city. Yet appearances in Oates can be deceiving, and just beneath the surface of Corky, as of his city, are some terribly corrosive forces at work. Those forces not only have killed a young woman Corky knows but also, in the end, will destroy Corky’s own life.Joyce Carol Oates has written yet another dissection of the contemporary American political scene. The setting is upstate New York (in a city like Buffalo), but it could be anywhere in urban America where the political machine has control. The Irish-Catholic politics of Union City are as corrupt as they can be. Through Oates’s close inspection of the life and thoughts of one of the city’s leaders, readers become aware of why this is so.Corky is a triumphant fictional character. An active alcoholic, a man who cannot maintain a relationship with a woman (they are always at fault), he is a George F. Babbitt for the 1990’s. Corky Corcoran should remind readers not only of Sinclair Lewis’...

...English 101 Fifth Graded Assignment Matthew C. Hinkle User ID: HI5247197 University of Management and Technology 18 August 2015 I have an issue with Director Breck Eisner’s adaptation of Clive Cussler’s book Sahara. In most of Clive Cussler’s books, the opening of the book sets up the story later on, the beginning story is usually a major part of the plot development. Those who have read his books understand this omission, it was largely left out and replaced with the director’s backstory. In the original movie the story of Kitty Mannock, a pilot who crashes into the desert during a record attempt in 1931 sets up the book, and later in the book when two of the characters come upon the crash, it makes sense, in the movie however they just find the plane, use the plane and the story is never told, something those who like Clive Cussler’s books enjoy immensely. Overall, I enjoyed both the movie and the book, though there were issues those who are Clive Cussler fans would catch right away, it was exciting to see one of the books come to life on the big screen. I have been a Clive Cussler fan for years, though this will probably be the only one to become a movie I was not completely disappointed. I enjoyed the movie, plenty of excitement, plot changes, drama, civil war history references and a little morality thrown in...

...Evaluative Argument Essay Tia Pace Western Governor’s University Student ID: 334765 Evaluative Argument Essay What is product quality? One website, www.encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com, defines product quality as: “The collection of features and characteristics of a product that contribute to its ability to meet given requirements.” Whose requirement is the product meeting? Is it the consumer? Consumers expect many things to determine the quality of a product, take for instance, bottled water. Consumers will evaluate based on the following questions: Does it taste good? Is it safe for me and my family? Does its cost reflect its value? Bottled water may score a “yes” in one of those three questions; it tastes good. The reason this product scores so low in product quality is the container it’s packaged in may leach harmful chemicals, the water, itself, also contains harmful chemicals that are not regulated properly, and bottled water is expensive. The ever-so-popular plastic bottle may be the worst part of the product. Over 20 years ago consumers got a big scare because plastic was made from a carbon-based synthetic called Bisphenol A (BPA). Manufacturers quickly changed the process and started listing products as BPA free to sway consumers in believing their product was safe. Now we are faced with a new plastic problem. Water bottles, today, are mainly made of polyethylene...

...Sahira Younas In the two sonnets, “Remember” by Christina Rossetti and “The Cross of Snow” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the authors address death and remembrance indicating similarities when exploring grieving process but also demonstrate its differences through literary techniques. They both utilized symbolism, imagery, and metaphorical language but showed differences in tone. Christina Rossetti and Henry Longfellow utilized symbolism to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that guides the reader to understand the poem as a whole. In “Remember”, the poet incorporated the volta-the shift. Before line 9, the speaker insisted the beloved remember ought to remember her. Afterward, she changes her mind and says it is better for her beloved to forget her because remembering her will be painful. That shift symbolized the speaker’s love. She would rather sacrifice the only thing keeping her “alive” and metaphorically kill herself, than to ask her lover to hold onto the pain. In “The Cross of Snow” incorporates symbolism in the title. The “cross” is a symbolic meaning before Christians because Jesus died on the cross and “snow” is white which represents purity. Longfellow essentially says that his wife is angelic and pure. Both poets incorporated imagery to means to use figurative language to represent objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses. In Rossetti’s poem, she includes diction such as, “silent” (line 2), and...

...Narrative Essay A Trip I’d Like To Take I’ve always thought that traveling is so spontaneous, adventurous, and life changing. To me, it just means that we get the opportunity to discover and learn new things that other places have to offer. Considering this, I have tried to be content with the places I’ve traveled throughout my life; Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, New York etc. Recently I started to think about escalating my travels to new locations. And, to start with, I attempted to figure out where I wanted to start. While traveling to the places I have, I discovered that perhaps the most irritating aspect for me was that all these places are cliché, “Niagara Falls”, “The Islands”, and “The Big Apple”. I told myself, “The next place I travel will be the exact opposite of cliché”. I crave change; I was thinking maybe Spain. I enjoy conversing in the Spanish language, the culture, the food, and not to mention the people. Since I’m extremely attracted to what Spain has to offer, I hope to plan on starting my traveling journey there. From my early childhood, I was raised in a Caribbean/Spanish atmosphere, so I speak both of the languages and have always enjoyed the music. When I was brainstorming where I’d start my first adventure, it was no surprise I desired Spain. I’m literally excited by the immensity that the culture has to offer and the amazing feeling of a new surrounding. I hope that when I first visit Spain, I’ll be eager to return and motivated to go outside my...

...English Composition 1 Unit 2 Individual Project There are many different types of bully breeds in the world today but there is one specific breed that has been getting a lot of bad publicity here lately. The American Staffordshire terrier, also known as the pit bull is one of today’s most feared dogs alive. But why is that? In the next page or two I will share with you my personal experiences and a little bit of history behind the pit bull. Since the late 1800s pit bulls have been loved and feared at the same time. Some love to hate them and some just love them. Those that love to hate them never really do any true research on the animal if they did they would find out a lot about the dog that they did not know already. Pit bulls are loving dogs that just want to be loved back. Not all pit bulls are mean or vicious as most would like to call them. It’s all in how the animal is raised, if an owner raises a dog to be mean and fight then that’s all the dog will know. It doesn’t matter if it’s a pit bull or a poodle; any dog can be trained to be the sweetest dog in the world or the meanest dog that you will ever meet. We have all encountered a wide variety of dogs, some sweet some shy or skittish or some meaner than a mad momma when her child has been mistreated. In my life time there are many dogs that have approached me and was mean, then there was the ones that were as sweet as a new born baby. The...
