Dear Mayor Nutter

The Public Act No. 11-52, “An Act Mandating Employers Provide Sick Leave to Employees”, that you vetoed, is of paramount interest to me because I am a Disabled Veteran. This issue directly impacts myself and fellow disabled American Veterans in the workforce. It was your final decision to veto the Bill. I understand your reason for doing so, but please allow my point of view to be heard.
Your reason in the veto letter was that the “burden businesses would face in meeting the requirements of this bill would deter job creation and decrease the competitiveness of our city at a time when we can ill afford it”. On the contrary Your Honor, I believe that passing this bill would increase the city’s competitiveness by drastically boosting morale in the workforce. In my opinion, it would create even more jobs, as passing the Bill would reduce workplace hostility in the event of an employee placed in an unexpected medical situation. I am a Disabled Combat Veteran. I am still obligated to provide for my family as well as myself and the passing of this Bill would support veterans, like me, similar to the way we supported our Nation in time of need.
Although I have read reports online, of your decision to veto this Bill, I understand that I am not in your position to fully understand your decision. Therefore, I do look forward to your reply expressing your opinions, and your current stance on this issue. Thank you, in advance, for taking time out of your schedule to consider my viewpoint on this matter. I believe it is a critical issue and would like to see the legislation pass this Bill to ensure workplace morale and job security for all employees in the City of Philadelphia.
