Preventing a cold can be as easy as listening to your body, while curing hiccups and insomnia might require using some unusual techniques. In this essay you will find helpful hints to help you rid a cold or hiccups and how to get some sleep at night. My experiences are based on old wives tales and tricks I have used on myself and I have proof that some of these tricks might work for others. Because I have not suffered a cold in many years, I thought I must be doing something right so I would like to share with you my regiment. Also, I will share what I have learned about how to cure hiccups and what my son and I have done to cure our hiccups. These tips are based mostly on old wives tale and tips from the “Help From Heloise” books by Eloise Bowles. Now my tips for curing insomnia are based on my experiences with the insomniac women in my family, who struggle to sleep at night or find themselves awoken from sleep in the wee hours of the morning. However, I do not have this problem of insomnia. So I became curious of the fact that these ladies were not sleeping at night only because I could not understand what they were going through. Sleep to me is like milk, “it does the body good” and I ensure I get the right amount of sleep. My tips to my family were based on my own sleeping rituals or from what I have read on WebMD. This essay is based on tips I have collected over the years, tips that I standby and I hope this information will help someone to prevent a cold, stop hiccups or to cure insomnia.
I have not had a cold since 2009, I have never had the flu nor have I had a flu vaccine. Some will contribute this to good DNA but I would have to give myself some credit as I have a fool-proof way of preventing or curing a cold. First, I take the right dosage of vitamin C every day. This is the first line of defense, along with vitamin E to help boost my immune system. I also take vitamin B12 complex for mental and physical energy. Secondly, I ensure that I eat a healthy, nutritional diet daily and drink water, water, water. I cannot stress how vital water is to the body and how many overall health benefits it provides. This is what the meaning of the saying, “eat an apple a day will keep the doctor away” if you eat right, you will have less infections and save money because of less doctor visits. So be careful when you diet to ensure that you do not starve your body of the nutrient it needs. Lastly, whenever you feel the first onset of a cold or fatigue, take some over the counter cough medications, drink plenty of water, eat a light diet of grains, protein, fruit and veggies and get proper rest. Listen to your body, learn your body, take care of your body by eating right, exercising, taking your vitamins and getting plenty of rest, and I guarantee you will experience less colds or flu, I know this has worked for me and again, I have not been sick since 2009.

Now curing hiccups might be a little tricky because there are no known cures but I have found several easy tricks that work for me. We have all been told to “drink some water” when you have the hiccups but does that even work? Well, it doesn’t work for me! But alas, I was reading an article some 15 years ago and the article instructed that if you pinch your earlobe for 60 seconds your hiccups will diminish. This trick works! It works because your brain waves will now shift from thinking about the hiccups and will now focus on the pain from the pinch of the earlobes. Which brings me to another trick, when you have hiccups, focus on something else to take your mind off of the hiccups and pull your tongue gently, this will sometimes help as well by calming your voice box from constricting and stop the hiccups. Another trick is to place a teaspoon of sugar on your tongue until it dissolves and then swallow, this trick is pretty handy too. But if you don’t want to try anything, then the hiccups will go away by itself over time. So the next time you get hiccups, pinch your earlobes, or shift your thoughts on something else and tug your tongue or place a teaspoon of sugar on your tongue, unconventional yes, but they work to cure your hiccups.
Enough women in my family suffer from lack of sleep so much so I decided I wanted to help them out by advising them on how to get a proper night’s sleep. My aunts, my mom, my grandmother and some of my cousins all suffer from insomnia but I don’t. I am not sure if my mother just instilled good sleeping habits in me at a young age but my body is so trained that if I do not get the proper hours of sleep, my body will alert me. This is an honest admission that I had no idea that there is a condition where people are restless at night and could not sleep. It was not until my family members would complain about this and admit that they would read or watch television at 2am because of insomnia. I actually thought that they were stretching the truth a little bit. However, this is when I first learned about insomnia. I also learned that these women in my family were not resting before they went to bed and they were doing activities too late where their bodies were confused as to whether to shut down for the day or gear up for the second day. The ladies were actually experiencing their second winds. I suggested to the ladies to try my tips for one week and if it didn’t work that I would take them out to dinner. I wagered my two aunts, my grandmother and my mom, to try my techniques for one week. First, as with a cold, you have to get the proper nutrients in your body because often times your body reacts to what nutrients it might be missing. For instance, a person may crave French fries but in actuality the body might just need the potassium from the potatoes. Your body is pretty smart and if you get to know it better, you will learn how to keep it healthy. So first, you have to eat right. I then suggested that they relaxed before going to bed. Sit down after work, eat a nice meal and look at T.V., or read a book or take a walk, way before bed time to signal to your brain that you are off work mode and now in relaxation mode. Take a warm bath, play some soft music but don’t do anything over stimulating, like internet surfing or talking on the phone with a friend, these are brain stimulators. The idea is to prepare yourself for total relaxation. And whatever you do, remove the T.V., radio and any nightlights you may have in your bedroom that will distract you from sleeping. Sounds and lights will only keep your mind wandering (brain stimulators) instead you should be preparing yourself for sleep in a quiet and dark room. I ended up taking one of the ladies out to eat because my aunt said that none of the tricks worked for her, which was okay. My other aunt found that she actually had sleep apnea so that was preventing her from sleeping well and my mom agreed that cutting off the T.V. and taking that evening walked, actually helped her to sleep better. These tips might seem typical but for someone who has insomnia these tips might be crucial in order to have a healthier life and to get much needed rest. Because lack of sleep can cause so many health issues and shorten your lifespan, I was pleased that the ladies in my family actually took the steps to change their sleeping habits or to go to the doctor to find out if there were underlining issues. So for a healthier you, a goodnight’s rest might be the cure.
My conclusion is that you can prevent a cold if you get the proper nutrients in your body by eating right, exercising and taking vitamins, and it is a proven fact that you will boost your immune system to have a healthier you. By trying one of the three techniques listed for curing hiccups might seem unconventional and painful but the tips will come in handy when your hiccups will just not go away by drinking a cold glass of water. Insomnia might be a tougher battle to fight but if you do not have an underlining medical condition your insomnia could simply be because you are not properly preparing yourself for sleep. If you totally emerge yourself into relaxation before going to bed and sleep in a distraction free bedroom, you will get some rest. I am no doctor but I do know my tips have helped me to prevent colds, cure my hiccups and to fight insomnia so I know these tips will work for you.

...Expectations of English Composition As I stumble through the door of my first English Composition class in college, I am baffled by my professor’s seemingly enormous expectations for my meager writing skills. My anxious mind anticipates the same question as I stare blankly at the white dry erase board; “Will my past knowledge of high school composition correlate with the academic rigors of college English Composition”. The curriculum of college English is far more demanding and time consuming than the simplicities of high school English. I am presented with great expectations to thrive in the pressures of writings essays and reading other authors’ pieces. My presumptions will lead to positive academic achievements in English composition as I absorb the significant impression of college writing skills. My past high school teachers valued student composition as simplistic and predictable. Writing about weekend ventures and family endeavors became very arduous and tedious as the topic always presented the identical situation, ‘Write an essay about your experiences of a fun family experience or weekend event.’ Therefore, my essays were based upon the same idea as other student’s writings, never exploring into the uncharted, creative world of thought provoking essays. Writing in high school became very dull because teachers expected each student composition to be based on the same topic. Teachers identified each student’s essay as monotonous and repetitive since it was based upon...

English Composition Course Analysis

...As I transition through college, the basis for studying English composition becomes a necessity in order for me to graduate within my next four years. The fact that it is one of the most despised courses of all required classes, most people tend to grossly overestimate the difficulty of writing an essay, as a result, relying on plagiarizing or asking other people to write the essays for them. Unfortunately, for most people, it takes time and effort to realize that writing essays require both concentration and practice. That being said, in order for me to succeed in freshman composition, I plan to make sure that I fully understand the topic of an assignment, in the case being an essay or report and doing all the work assigned by my instructor to stay well-prepared with the rest of the class. While alternating into freshman composition is going to be a challenge, I have realized the many steps to take in order to do well and not fall behind. As far as understanding the information, it is important for me to go to class every day and to take notes during the lecture or seminar, as well as listening to the instructor for what he or she has to say. Whether...

...Karen D EN130.1.1 English Composition II Assignment 6_06 December 4, 2013 Compare Online Shopping with Traditional Shopping Online shopping and traditional shopping has as many similarities as differences. Online shopping allows you to shop from the comfort of your home as opposed to traditional shopping, whereas, you would have to leave home to shop. Although traditional shopping allows you to try on, touch, and test a product, online will allow that and even if it’s unsatisfactory, the consumer has to go through the motions to return and exchange. There is, however, more convenience with traditional shopping when it comes to payment for merchandise. With traditional shopping, the options are far more than online shopping. For example, you can pay with cash with traditional shopping with the event that you don’t have credit cards and such. Unlike with online shopping where you must pay with a form of cards. Furthermore, with online shopping, you have the convenience of shopping at a store that is not in your local area, though you would have to pay for shipping and handling, you still have the flexibility to shop at a far away store. As opposed to traditional shopping you would only have access to what’s there near your hometown. Another advantage is having a store that offers online shopping; it would allow you to buy items not normally found in the physical location. Also, if you are a person that doesn’t like a lot of crowds, then online shopping is the way...

...Thomas Edison State Collage 2004-05-ENC-101-OL009: English Composition I Fast food, Gardening and Budgeting Money are activities that you can gain knowledge through participation, observation or both participation and observation. The question I would ask, “How do you know things?” I bet everyone ask that question sometime in their lives. I know, I have asked that question a few times. When I think back on how I learned to do a few things I know that I did and did not have the knowledge to do, but through participation, observation or both participation and observation I did gain knowledge. Like fast food, I can remember going to McDonalds with my family for a hamburger. I was very young and did not know what a hamburger was. I observed my brother eat his hamburger, taking a big bite and chow it down in two bites. My father had bought me a hamburger, wanting to be like my bother I took a big bite as he did. Almost immediately, I spit it out! I did not like the taste of the mustered on the burger. That is, when I discovered I did not like mustard. My father bought me another hamburger that was plain and I ate it all up. That day I gained my knowledge both by participation and observation, though the stronger of the to was by participation. Though observing my brother did teach me how to eat a hamburger in two bites. Something that I learned by observation was budgeting money. My mother used to pay all the bills in our family. ...The Honorable Mayor Michael Nutter Office of the Mayor Room 215 City Hall Philadelphia, PA 19107 Dear Mayor Nutter The Public Act No. 11-52, “An Act Mandating Employers Provide Sick Leave to Employees”, that you vetoed, is of paramount interest to me because I am a Disabled Veteran. This issue directly impacts myself and fellow disabled American Veterans in the workforce. It was your final decision to veto the Bill. I understand your reason for doing so, but please allow my point of view to be heard. Your reason in the veto letter was that the “burden businesses would face in meeting the requirements of this bill would deter job creation and decrease the competitiveness of our city at a time when we can ill afford it”. On the contrary Your Honor, I believe that passing this bill would increase the city’s competitiveness by drastically boosting morale in the workforce. In my opinion, it would create even more jobs, as passing the Bill would reduce workplace hostility in the event of an employee placed in an unexpected medical situation. I am a Disabled Combat Veteran. I am still obligated to provide for my family as well as myself and the passing of this Bill would support veterans, like me, similar to the way we supported our Nation in time of need. Although I have read reports online, of your decision to veto this Bill, I understand that I am not in your position to fully understand your decision. Therefore, I do look forward to your reply expressing your opinions...

...Over the course of the my college career in english composition classes I have had to write a large amount of papers and stories. Over the time spent in these classes I have been given the information to better my writing style and grammar. Although my writing first began developing in high school it is in college where the true test of the knowledge gained and the knowledge that was previously know is tested to the standards of the real world and what is expected of you from you future carrier. I believe that Comp at a college has given me a greater grasp on what I need to work on and develop on in my writing. In highschool most of the writing done was about books that were read. At that time they were mostly summaries or opinions about said books but during senior year the development of critical writing was implemented into my curriculum. This is where my journey of writing began and where my collection of knowledge of most writing techniques stems from. This is the class that prepared me for my writing at a college level....

My English Composition Analysis

...Writing has never been my strong suit. In fact, even though I’m a junior in highschool, I still write like a middle schooler. I thought taking English Composition would be difficult for me, and although it wasn’t always easy, the class wasn’t as bad as I expected. English Composition improved my writing craft and the length of my papers. When I first started this class I didn’t have much of an idea on how to create a well-written paper. I’m still not at the level I would like to be, but I have improved. I used to think that every paper written for school had to be formal, and you couldn’t start a sentence with “and” or “but” or with the same word for multiple sentences in a row. From taking this class I have learned that those are types of writer’s craft. Starting the sentence with the same word is an echo effect and it’s used for emphasis. The piece that I believe shows most of my improvement is my analysis. I chose to do this piece on a song called “Scars to Your Beautiful.” I wasn’t sure how to really write an analysis. At first I tried to write about a picture where there was a young girl who seemed to be overwhelmed by school. She was surrounded by books and there was tons of writing and equations on a chalkboard behind her. I had no idea where to even...

Ritual Essay-English Composition

...Argument on funeral ritual We, as humans, share a deep need for ritual and connection, especially when there is a great change in our lives such as getting married, birth of a child, school graduation, death of love ones and many others. According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, a ritual is defined as “a religious or solemn ceremony consisting of a series of actions performed according to a prescribed order”. Performing a funeral ceremony is a traditional and symbolic ritual of expressing our beliefs, thoughts and feelings about the death of love ones but the crucial purposes of this ritual has been overlooked to a great a extent in our society. Many people think funeral is waste of money but when carefully planned and does not put survivors into debt, the benefits outweigh the detriments. A funeral is intended to form unique reflection of one's life, which serves to confirm emotionally the reality of the loss, and bring closure to survivors. Funeral ritual do not just acknowledges an end of life but a life span as whole (both life that was lived and end of life). They offer the living (mourners) a possibility to assemble and remember the things that are relevant to them about the life of the person who died such as his or her accomplishments, friendship, guidance or love. Assembling for funeral ceremony is place for us to think about the moments we shared with the deceased and to share those memories with others. This is helpful to mourners the more we share such...

...Video Gaming Addiction and its Effects on Job Performance, Interpersonal Social Interaction, and Marriages Western Governors University Video Gaming Addiction and its Effects Within society there are several addictions that plague us and are mainly associated with substance abuse. There are addictions to drugs, alcohol, food and multiple others that are too numerous to list. However, within this century we have seen the rise of video game addiction among the young, the old, male and female. Video game addiction is related to other underlying disorders such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, other anxiety disorders, and impulse control disorders (Oggins, 2012). The American Medical Association has considered adding this addiction to their manual of mental disorders (Northrup, 2014). There have been several studies on the addiction to video gaming. These studies correlate the negative effects of excessive time spent playing video games with the associated risks that result from this behavior. Research shows that video gaming has become one of the new addictions of the 21st Century due to the loss of interpersonal social interaction, negative effects on job performance, and the debilitating effects on marriages or relationships. Video game addiction is a direct result of the great leaps that we have made in technology. With the invention of the personal computer and following the inception of the internet this has spawned a new addiction that now plagues...
