...myself and iBottom of Form The Scientific Method Psychology is, like any science, a branch of knowledge that deals with a body of facts systematically arranged and shows the operation of general laws. In all sciences, including psychology, a special procedure, the scientific method, must be used to collect data to answer a question or to solve a problem. The scientific method not only answers the question at hand but also is used to construct scientific theories. A theory is systematically organized knowledge applicable in a wide variety of circumstances. (The amount of information available in any science is too vast to be useful unless it is organized through the use of theories.) Theories are also used to predict events or to answer questions in a specific scientific discipline. In psychology, theories are used to organize and predict behavior and mental processes. The findings of a particular study may support or lead to the alteration of a theory. While the scientific method doesn't provide a step-by-step recipe for dealing with specific circumstances, it does provide general guidelines for the following procedures in any scientific data collection. Formulation of the problem, design of the study, collection of data, analysis of data, conclusions drawn from data. The description of a study, its procedures, and its conclusions is frequently published as an article in a scientific journal. Careful attention to following the scientific method allows a second investigator to replicate or refute the...

The data were collected from the students’ utterances asking for explana-tions about English grammar and writing that were posted on Facebook, their gain scores in the pre-test and post-test, and interview responses. The findings showed a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the pre-test and the post-test (t = 6.65, p = 0.00). Most common topics of discussion involved sentence structures, followed by word meanings, parts of speech and then relative clauses. It was found that English grammar was worth promoting for discussions on Facebook because there were correlations between the gain scores in the grammar and writing parts at the significant levels (r = 0.399 in the pre-test and r = 0.859 in the post-test). The students also had positive attitudes toward using Facebook as a means of learning grammar and writing. As an alternative learning tool, Facebook provided them a convenient and attractive...

Progeria Hutchinson Gilford Syndrome (HGP syndrome) is a genetic condition that is fatal and is characterized by the child developing features of premature ageing. It tends to affect the musculoskeletal system, skin and the blood vessels. About one in every 8 million births may develop this disorder. Many cases may go unrecognized, undiagnosed, or associated with stillborn children. The mortality rate of the condition is high due to heart and vascular disorders. A Child affected with the disorder may live for about 10 to 12 years. The condition more often affects males compared to females in the ratio of 5: 1. During the infancy stage, the child may appear to be normal, but after the age of 9 months to 24 months, the child begins to experience features of growth delays, stunted growth, short stature and the failure to put on body weight. ...Understanding Prions Ask and Answer Paper: Understanding Prions Steven English Ask and Answer Paper: Understanding Prions 1 As its name suggests, Pasteur's germ theory of disease simply states that microbes are the cause of disease. Though it seems obvious now, it was revolutionary at the time of its inception and is central to our modern understanding and treatment of diseases. It replaced the commonly held and relatively complex 'humoral theory' with a simpler concept that boiled down to a relationship between microorganism and host (“Germ Theory,” n.d.). But as our understanding of the disease process grows with more and more diseases continuing to be discovered, we find that while viruses and microorganisms might be the main cause they aren't the only way in which disease can spread. Prions are one such challenge to this simple germ-disease paradigm. In this paper, the following questions about prion diseases (focusing primarily on kuru and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease) will be examined: “What are they and what does their discovery mean for our understanding of disease and evolution?” The prion protein (PrPC) is a protein seemingly found in the brains of almost all vertebrate animals which leads to the conclusion that...

...Seasonal Influenza Each year thousands of people in the United States are diagnosed with the influenza virus. The word “influenza” originates from the Italian word “influential” because people used to believe that the influence of the planets, stars, and moon caused the flu, that only the universal influence could explain such rapid and widespread sickness. The English adopted the word “influenza” in the mid-eighteenth century. It is known as the flu. Seasonal influenza is an acute viral infection caused by an influenza virus. What is the influenza virus? Virologists are not certain about the origins of the viruses, though they have three theories: they started as living cells and devolved into simpler organisms, they originated as primitive...

...Good morning head master, assistant head master, teachers and students. I'm delighted to have the honour to be here on this special event The School Entrepreneurship Day. It is my privilege to stand here and share with you about “Why Breakfast Is The Most Important Meal of The Day?” How many of you want to be healthy? How many of you find it a challenge to eat healthily because you are always running late! When I was a kid, my mom always told me that breakfast was the most important meal of the day. It turns out she was right. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, not just for nutritional benefits, but for mental benefits as well, and there is no excuse not to eat it. You would be shocked at how many people skip their first meal. According to Adirondack Sports and Fitness, nearly one fifth of adults don't eat at all in the morning and many students don't eat breakfast either. Twenty percent of elementary students skip breakfast and sixty percent of students ages between 9 to 15 skip breakfast. A lot of people, especially children, go through the day without having breakfast. Many people believe that it is not necessary, or they say that they are not hungry or don’t have time for that and begin their day with no meal. I believe that everyone especially children should eat breakfast before going to school. The purpose of this talk is to show the importance of breakfast, especially for school children. Studies show that eating breakfast everyday is important in...

The last topic will be the possible causes, risk factors and medications available to the sufferer. “Alzheimer’s disease dementia is a progressive degenerative brain disease and has no known cure. It is the most common form of dementia and eventually leads to death. ...Individual Differences That people differ from each other is obvious. How and why they differ is less clear and is the subject of the study of Individual differences (IDs). Although to study individual differences seems to be to study variance, how are people different, it is also to study central tendency, how well can a person be described in terms of an overall within-person average. Indeed, perhaps the most important question of individual differences is whether people are more similar to themselves over time and across situations than they are to others, and whether the variation within a single person across time and situation is less than the variation between people. A related question is that of similarity, for people differ in their similarities to each other. Questions of whether particular groups (e.g., groupings by sex, culture, age, or ethnicity) are more similar within than between groups are also questions of individual differences. Personality psychology addresses the questions of shared human nature, dimensions of individual differences and unique patterns of individuals. Research in IDs ranges from analyses of genetic codes to the study of sexual, social, ethnic, and cultural differences and includes research on cognitive abilities, interpersonal styles, and emotional reactivity. Methods range from laboratory experiments to longitudinal field studies and include data reduction techniques such as Factor Analysis and Principal Components Analysis, as well as...

...Assignment 2.1: The Public Needs to Know – Draft Version Lewis G. Hymon Strayer University English 115 February 5, 2012 Professor Traci Wilmoth Personalized Medicine: Cancer and the Human Genome Personalized medicine uses molecular analysis to obtain maximum medical benefits in the treatment and management of patient’s known diseases. It can also be used to predict the predisposition for inherited deceases such as cancer. Personalized medicine’s goal is to begin a whole new level and standard for healthcare. Personalized medicine is a rapidly growing field within the healthcare industry. Personalized medicine is designed to fit into each person's unique medical profile including their genetic, genomic, and environmental disposition and or variables. Due to the fact that specifics are sometimes different from person to person, the type of the diseases, to include the start, the duration, and how the decease may respond to the forms of treatment available or other clinical solutions is totally individual to the person who has the disease. One key tenant of the Human Genome Project was stated as; to learn the sequences of the 3 billion units of DNA that makes up a human genome, to include the identification of all of the genes located within the enormous amounts of information obtained. Sometime in 2003, almost all of the pairs of chemical compounds that the units are comprised of had been put in their exact sequence. The genes in the DNA including...
