...English 101L: Composition February 2, 2008 Summary DAVE BARRY Guys vs. Men Dave Barry’s insight in Guys vs. Men begins to explore the world of the male figure. Barry touches base on a few things that he believes separates guys and men apart. Barry first mentions that “Guys Like Neat Stuff” and begins to explain that guys enjoy things that are unnecessary to have and perhaps a bit over the top but they are things that make them happy and keep them entertained. Barry then moves into talking about how “Guys Like A Really Pointless Challenge”. Barry mentions that guys often engage in activities that are beyond what should be the standard rational of middle aged men. His thoughts on how “Guys Do Not Have A Well-Defined Moral Code” briefly delves into how guys know that they are expected to perform and act a certain way, yet they often completely disregard these ideas held by others on how they should act, not on purpose but just because they are in fact guys. The last thing Barry brings up is that “Guys Are Not Great At Communicating Their Intimate Feelings, Assuming They Have Any”. Barry presents the idea that guys tend to keep personal issues, just that, personal. Guys generally keep answers to questions they don’t want to answer brief at best, and the only time they share how they feel is most often when in the company of another guy friend. Dave Barry’s Guys vs. Men is a funny, interesting and seemingly true effort at explaining who guys really are, and why they are that...

...century when America faced with lots of immigrants who ate very seasoned food that was unusual for locals. Also the author wrote about assimilating the immigrants by the government. I highlighted the main question of the text: What makes an immigrant a citizen? And I surely know the answer. It is Assimilation, that includes a lot of things. First of all, to assimilate an immigrant must speak local language in his everyday life. Language is the most important part of assimilation. Without speaking local language, like English in USA, an individual is not able to communicate with people around him. Without ability to communicate with others, an immigrant can not get a job, buy anything, ask others for help, etc. People use language to say others what they need, to do any work together, in general to live in society, be a part of it. For example, there are some people in USA who doesn’t really speak English, like people of Brighton Beach, Chinatown in New York City or another “national districts”. People there can not go and do anything outside of their neighborhood. They can’t get a well-paid job in rich neighborhoods like Downtown. So, the first thing an immigrant must do to become a part of the society and assimilate is to learn local language as well as he can. Also, assimilation includes eating the same food as others. To become an American, an immigrant should eat what Americans eat every day. Immigrants of the past century were different. They did not eat American food...

...aspects of diversity that have most affected my personal identity are race, age, gender, and physical ability. Gender is one of the most easily of observed areas of cultural diversity. As a woman, especially one living in the south, I am expected to look and act a certain way. I am to be presentable at all times. There are expectation in the way I speak but act as well. The way I am supposed to dress is also defined by our culture. There are certain jobs that I am expected to have and others I am not. The thing with culture is it not only is the visible images we are to portray there are invisible ones as well. Others assume that because I am a woman I am less than a man. There are certain ways I am expected to think as well. What people fail to realize is that I am a very strong willed individual. I am quite educated. I may live in the south now, but I was born and raised in the mid-west. I have held jobs that a typical woman is not expected to have. All of these things have shaped me into the person I am. Being a woman comes with many expectations placed on us by our culture, but visible and invisible. Physical ability is another area of cultural diversity that is many times overlooked when going through our day to day lives. When I tell someone that...

...enough to begin my education from kindergarten. Kindergarten has always been a memorable time to reflect back on especially my first ever picture day. Considering the fact that I was a novice to the English language, I was placed in an ESL class. I could still go back decades and recall my first ever picture day. It was definitely the most award pose I have ever put on. There I was standing with an odd posture, wearing an old grandma knitted navy blue school sweater. I had the cheesiest smile on my face like I had just swallowed a ghost pepper and was shocked by its surprising taste. I was holding my favorite book the “The three little bears” with a tight grip to a slight angle incase anybody tried to take it from me, I’d run off with it at 90 mph. My innocence was presented in the picture through my discomfort. But I was a kid and had no idea that my parents would actually pay to get this ridiculous picture enlarged for the family album. Years after the picture, many things had changed. I was no longer a skinny kid, but instead could’ve been known as the “fat kid who loves cake.” I never before faced many challenges such as peer pressure of others, communicating with the opposite sex, becoming good friends with people and excelling further in school. The only thing that remained the same was...

...The Decline of The West Short story by: Hanif Kureishi The Decline of the West is a short story written by the English, half Pakistani writer Hanif Kureishi in 2010. The main theme in the short story is the capitalism and how material we have become in the West in the year of 2010 and how we strive to gain material comfort ahead of true happiness and greater meaning in life. The short story’s main character is a forty-five year old man named Mike who is on his way home to his family. It takes place in the upper class of the outskirts of London. Mike thinks that his family will appreciate that he is home early from work, which is not something that occurs since he is not working less than twelve-hour shifts. Mike seems as a hard-working man who does not spend much time with his family and we get a very negative picture of his family. There is a very cold attachment between him and he family since he is never home. But they can be demanding and the content that fills up their lives is material goods. At the short beginning the atmosphere and language is described very positive. Mike has endured the most desolate tube trip home and is looking forward to come home to his family and their home which is described as a nice and warm home he is looking forward to come home to; “Opening the door to a warm hall hearing the voices of his wife and children”. Though he has to tell his wife, Imogen that he got fired from his job. The language is well written in informal language...

...on what comes to this new adventure. I have learned a new couple tricks at the seminar which will be in use for all my subjects, I also have figured out how to do finish all my assignments on time, and last but not the least just some challenges I am trying to overcome. Last week on Thursday on the 3rd of September, a lady from the SCF library came in to talk to the class. I learned a couple things from her. I already knew coming in how citations are very critical in college but I did not know how to cite properly. The staff are experts when it comes to that, they are willing to help us cite properly. Another thing I found very helpful is that we already have $5 dollars in our account that we can use for free printing, I thought that was pretty nice of the school to do that. Mostly I was very intrigued about the Data Base on their website. It is very helpful for any kind of research papers, whether it is English, Science, or even History. The thing that is really cool about the database is that they are ALL reliable sources. I actually already used it a few days ago for my English paper and it definitely saved me a lot of time. Taking 6 subjects all at once equals tons of endless homework. I was pretty stressed out the first week of school because I kept thinking to myself that it is IMPOSSIBLE to finish all of the assignments on time. So my first step was purchasing a huge agenda. What I did was make a checklist under each subject of each day and my rule it to finish...

Also we need to use the email to communicate with our supplier. Since I can write English, I can use the internet to contact our supplier in Germany. The last main environment is environment is economic. Our company is in Taiwan, and we import hearing aid sell to our customers, so our product is middle price. Not low price. If the Economic environment is bad, then we also can’t accomplish the sales. Q3. The benefit of using a stakeholder approach is able to think of other stakeholders' interest can better inform the moral dimension of your own decisions. The stakeholder approach also provides a means for mapping complicated relationship between the focal and other stakeholders, a means of identifying the strategies of each stakeholder, and a means for assessing the moral responsibility of all the constituencies. ...”The Order of Things” Carl is about forty, he is six feet tall, he has pale eyes, angular features and light hair. He’s married to a teacher and he has a daughter. He lives in Worland, with his wife and daughter. Carl and Lily met at a softball game, when they both were sitting and watching their spouses play the outfield. They had everything in common, and soon they began talking. Carl had been thinking of her all his time I Worland, they just hadn’t been speaking. But that day, they sat and talked while watching the game. They felt an intimate connection, even when they weren’t talking. Carl just felt something about her, he couldn’t ignore and apparently they agreed to meet three weeks later. They met at Super 8, a motel south of Cody, where they apparently had their first time together. After that, they were seeing each other in different places, different motels and hotels. In time, their relationship turned into a serious thing. They were seeing each other every Sunday morning, meeting and making out. They were in love and they made plans about the future. They would both get a divorce with their currently spouses, when Carl’s daughter was out of high school in two years. Carl had never felt so comfortable with anybody but her, and he felt it easy to touch her and be with her. He felt much happier with her, than with his wife. I think it’s kind of strange, that they can have a relationship like that. In the dark. I understand, that they have to keep it a secret, but...

But to no one else is it ever as beautiful--except the rare man who manages to recover it, who knows that it has to be recovered. Garcia Lopez de Cardenas discovered the Grand Canyon and was amazed at the sight. It can be imagined: One crosses miles of desert, breaks through the mesquite, and there it is at one's feet. Later the government set the place aside as a national park, hoping to pass along to millions the experience of Cardenas. ...Carlos Olea-Tapia 9/02/15 Mr. F 5 paragraph essay Standing out I was only ten when my dad first told me not to be like the rest of my fellow students. He said, “The only two things that matter in this world are family and being who you are.” From that day on, I, Carlos Olea-Tapia, took these words seriously. It wasn’t easy since I was born on March 8, 1998, and at the time a lot of things were happening in the year 2000. The media was tough to face since everything out there was either mainstream or popular so I stared to look for alternatives such as listening to underground bands and reading books. School wasn’t easy either. People don’t like change so when they saw a kid like me they would make fun of me or admire me for being who I am. I’m now seventeen and I’ve been changing ever since. Elementary school and middle school were both shit like literally some kids made my life a living hell. Elementary school was probably the worst; I was bullied by many kids until one day I came home and told my mother, my mother straight up gave me permission to punch any kid if bothered no matter what the school consequences were. That day I stood up for myself and showed the world that I wasn’t going to take shit from no one. Middle school was a little better. I made quite the name for myself. By the end of eighth grade I was known as a pimp and I liked it. That reputation continued on to high school by then I was no longer a pimp I was a drug lord. I wore the best of the best clothes...
