Topic - “ Mental Illnesses”

Over the summer holidays I chose the topic “ Mental Illnesses” because It was such an intriguing topic. I had a look at two mental illnesses over the period of time that I was at home, those two topics were Agoraphobia & Insominia.

Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder in situations where the sufferer perceives certain environments as dangerous or uncomfortable, often due to the environment's openness or crowdedness. These situations include, wide-open spaces, as well as uncontrollable social situations such as the possibility of being met in shopping malls, airports, etc.
The sufferer may go to great lengths to avoid those situations, in severe cases becoming unable to leave their homes. 2.2%, of adults in the Australia between the ages of 18 and 54, suffer from agoraphobia, agoraphobia can also relate to 60% of other phobias.

Insomnia, is a sleep disorder in which there is an inability to fall asleep or to stay asleep as long as desired. Insomnia is most often thought of as both a medical sign and a symptom that can accompany several sleep, medical, and psychiatric disorders characterized by a continuous difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or having poor quality sleep. Insomnia can occur at any age, but it is particularly common in the elderly. Insomnia can be short term (up to three weeks) or long term (above 3–4 weeks), which can lead to memory problems, depression, irritability and an increased risk of heart disease.
Those who are having trouble sleeping sometimes turn to sleeping pills, which can help when used occasionally but may lead to substance dependence or addiction if used regularly for an extended period to continue getting sleep.

Treatment for Mental Illness

...Treatment for Mental Illness Stacey Adam English 111- BBH Professor Fernandez Ivy Tech Community College November 12, 2009 Treatment for Mental Illness The word “mental” means mind, and a mental illness is a medical condition that disturbs a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, interactions with others, and daily functioning (Bobgan, 2000). Until recently with all the studies and research on treatment, understanding, and acceptance of mental illnesses, mystery and fear have always surrounded it. A lot of people believe that mental illnesses are rare and “could only happen to someone else.” There are over two hundred classified forms of mental illnesses and many ways to treat them. Schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, bipolar disorder, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic or anxiety disorder, and personality disorder are some of the most common mental illnesses. The signs and symptoms for mental illness vary in every person depending on the possible disorder and because every person’s perception of “normal” is different. Changes in behavior, mood and personality, sadness, crying, anger, anxiety, thoughts of suicide, and withdrawal from family and friends are just a few of the signs and symptoms related to mental illness. It is very difficult to find the exact cause of a mental illness, but research shows that these conditions can be caused from a combination of genetics, biological, psychological, and environmental factors...

Modern Medical Practices vs. Alternative Health Practices

...Modern medical practices vs. Alternative health practices Robin Phillips English composition 1 Sarah MacDonald July 16, 2012 Modern medical practices vs. Alternative health practices With the countless illnesses of today, there are various options available in the health field to receive the care and treatment desired. Two of these choices are with the General practitioner and a Complementary & Alternative health practice. Comparably, both practices treat the same set of common illness’s or diseases such as pregnancy, childhood illnesses, common cold, asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, injury, and anxiety; however, there are differences in the technique to treatments and healing methods, which should be considered in choosing the type of practice that best fits your needs. In order to discuss the similarities and differences between the two practices we must first define them. A general practitioner, that practices modern medicine is defined by Collins English Dictionary as “ a physician who does not specialize but has a medical practice (general practice) in which he deals with all illnesses” (2005); while Collinsenglishdictionary.com defines Complementary health as” also called: alternative medicine , the treatment, alleviation, or prevention of disease by such techniques as osteopathy, homeopathy, aromatherapy, and acupuncture, allied with attention to such factors as diet and emotional stability, which...

Mental Illness

...MENTAL ILLNESS October 2001, just after September 11, he started acting and behaving erratically. He was not the same man we have known as Uncle Dan for the past few years. What has happened to him? Has he suffered from some type of mental illness? According to Canadian Health Association “mental illnesses can take many forms, just as physical illnesses do” (Canadian Mental Health Association, 2009). Uncle Dan was born and raised in a small town named Quesnel, located in the South Western part of Canada. Although his parents were not wealthy, they were not financially restricted either, due to the abundance of lumber mills in this region. They had pushed and financed their children education, for they knew that it was an investment into the future. Even though Uncle Dan’s parent never received a formal education, they were fully aware of the importance of going to college. As an honor graduate from the local High school, Uncle Dan received a scholarship from the province university, BC University, to continue his education. That year, he had met Julia, my mother’s younger sister, whom he married a year later. Shortly afterward, Dan dropped out of the University and returned home to work in a local mill. The only explanation that was given to his parents was “College is not meant for people like me.” While this was not the extent of Uncle Dan’s transformation, it was not enough of a significant warning sign that Uncle Dan had a mental issue. In fact, it was not until that...

...Paper The life of a Chinese American Growing up in a country where you are a minority amongst many other minorities can be difficult. This can cause many mental illnesses to the families and the individual itself. The United States is a country with many minority groups, one of which includes Chinese Americans. I know myself that it’s hard living in a place where there is racism and stereotypes about Chinese people, since I have been through this. The Chinese community is one of the fastest growing communities in the United States. The Chinese first came to the United States in the middle of the nineteenth century. The reason why they left their home country was due to high taxes, peasant rebellions, family feuds, and poverty. The reason they came to the United States during that time was because of the California Gold Rush and a better economic opportunities. But because there were so many Chinese coming, the people of the United States developed xenophobia (a fear of people from other countries). So 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act was put upon. But many years later, Chinese Americans were able to slowly to come back into the United States. Living in a different country can be very difficult. Especially if you are a parent trying to raise your children. This can cause a lot of stress because they have to work really hard in order to provide for their family. In “Chinese American Parents’ Acculturation and Enculturation, Bicultural Management Difficulty, Depressive Symptoms...

...P3 – Explain patterns and trends in health and illness among different social groupings. For this task I have been asked to produce a report to investigate which social groupings are most in need of health and social care services. To assist in the planning of care provision in my report I will be explaining patterns and trends in health and illness among different social groupings identified according to factors such as gender, social class, geographical location, ethnicity and age. SOCIAL CLASS AND PATTERNS OF HEALTH AND ILLNESS Social class is an intricate issue that consists of status, wealth, culture, background and employment. The association between social class and ill health is far from being straight-forward. There are many influences on health and one of them is social class. The Black Report on Inequalities in Health Care was commissioned by the Department of Health in the United Kingdom by Health Minister David Ennals in 1977. They wanted to point out why the NHS was failing to reduce social inequalities in health and to investigate the problems. Ennals would do this by analysing people’s health records and lifestyles from different social class backgrounds. Ennals found that the overall health of the nation had improved but the improvement was not equal across all social class backgrounds. The gap in inequalities in health between the higher and lower social classes was widening. Ethnicity “According to the 2001 census 8% of the UK’s population is...

...April 21, 2015 Professor Mya Poe Advanced Writing Professor Northeastern University Boston, MA 02115 Dear Professor Poe, This semester has been a great learning opportunity for me and my writing skills. Before this class I was already comfortable with some of the learning goals presented on the syllabus, however, a few of them were strengthened with the projects we worked on. For example, before this class I would never peer review or revise my own papers. With the amount of revisions that were undertaken in all four projects, I feel that I have become more comfortable in the act of revision. Also, I was never good at incorporating forms of evidence to support my claims, ideas and arguments. This class was very helpful in showing how to take research and incorporate it into a project. Overall, this class has allowed me to strengthen my skills as a reviser, helped me “formulate and articulate a stance through my writing”, and helped me to use more forms of evidence to support my claims, ideas and arguments. Project 1 was the simplest of the four projects. I decided to analyze a research article on Marketing and how companies have started to move their businesses into developing nations. At first I didn’t think I would be able to write a rhetorical analysis on this article because of its length but after multiple revisions and help from peers I wrote my final draft. This was the one project where the revisions really helped me grow as a writer. Without these revisions...

...Robin Smith Advanced Composition for the English Major Karen Lawler 03/14/2016 Holistic Medicine Vs Conventional Medicine In this day in time, an increasing number of people are turning to a holism lifestyle. People are acknowledging the successfulness of holistic medicines. Holism combines experience and science, mind and body, and cross-cultural and traditional methods to diagnosis and treat patients. People are now opening their eyes to the many limitations that conventional medicines narrow view of the body. Conventional medicine focuses on dividing and sectioning the body and prescribing man-made chemicals to address the symptoms. These are the differences of conventional medicines and holistic medicines. "No single method or model of healthcare is capable of meeting the entire range of human needs at the time of illness and disease." (Sewell, 2008). Holism creates motivation by educating patients to take personal responsibility to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Holism instructs patients to learn effective ways to treat spiritual, physical, and mental conditions. Helping them to experience more joy and energy in being alive. "However, if care is approached through practices that are committed to holistic care there is a greater chance to influence healing and of people feeling better about themselves—both practitioner and patient." (Sewell, 2008). Conventional medicine focuses on the infectious origin of a disease and not the upkeep and construction of physiological...

Essay On Dual Diagnosis In Social Work

...The social work profession is one that exceeds both boundaries and expectations. With the proper credentials and knowledge, there are no limitations on individuals who consider themselves empathetic, diligent, and serving. For some social work professionals, human health is their ground for providing assistance to clients who may not be able to help themselves. In this field, social workers use communication, research, and networking skills to find needed resources that will ensure both mental and physical stability. Specifically, the United States Department of Health and Human Services quotes that mental health involves the psychological, emotional, and social well-being of an individual (“What is Mental Health”, n.d.). Therefore, it is important to note that properly treating someone with a mental illness goes beyond their mental faults; however, professionals should delve deeper into other realms that affect the mind and the body when treating clients, especially those who suffer with dual diagnosis. Defined, a dual diagnosis is when a client suffers from both a mental disorder and an addiction (“Important Statistics on Dual Diagnosis”, 2017). About four million people suffered from dual diagnosis in the past year alone (“Important Statistics on Dual Diagnosis”, 2017). This statistic brings about...

Impacts of Social Networking

...English 1101 27 November 2013 Impacts of Social Networking: Good or Bad? In recent years, social networking has emerged as a new resource for people to connect socially. These social networking sites have made it possible for people, who share the same interest without boundaries, to connect by eliminating political, economic, and geographic borders. Society as a whole must come to realize that although social networking has many benefits as a new way to communicate, it can be exploited and will, in turn, have negative results. Users must be cognizant of the dangers and should be able to identify so that social networking is working effectively for them. Social networking sites group people together into specific groups much like a small community of people. They allow freedom to communicate with all types of people from around the world and with people of whom they normally would not interact. Social sites help friends and family stay in communication with each other via online updates regarding their lives, photo uploads, and video uploads. They have truly introduced a new world to people by allowing consistent and constant communication with one another. On the other hand, these sites detract from live social interactions and have caused people to spend large amounts of time misusing them. Therefore, society must more closely examine the benefits of social networking sites and gain an understanding of how to use these sites effectively. A recent study conducted...
