...Diagnostic Essay The expectations I have for coming into English 11 would to learn and to grow my English skills, my assumptions about the reading would that they will be interesting, challenging reads, I have an array of strengths and weaknesses that contribute to the English student that I am. I can read well, but I don’t have the desire to read. I don’t like to read and don’t read that often, even though I should. I hope the year goes smooth and that I grow more in the pursuit of going to a good college and to have the skill set to write great, acceptable essays. My expectations for coming into English 11 would be to learn new concepts and to grow on the old concepts that I already know. I hope that English 11 takes me out of my comfort zone and focuses on more reading and analysis. That is a weak point for me, reading and then analyzing the passage or even a whole book. I hope to learn more about figurative language, because in some of my other classes the kind of advanced English is hard to understand, and the meaning behind some of the way the words are worded....

...in the English language In the 3th grade I started having English classes. Back then I did not know how English would be such a big part of my life as it is today. I think that especially my generation use English on an everyday basis and as a way of a natural communication. One of the reasons why we speak, read, talk and write so much English is because of the social media. For the common youth of 2015 social media is a fundamental routine and habit of our everyday lives. We use social media to connect with people all over the world, in the English language. I also use my English to read articles, reviews, blogs, and watch YouTube videos. I really enjoy to watch movies as well, and sometimes it is not possible to get Danish subtitles, on some English talking movies. It is not only on the media I use the English language. I have read a lot of books on English too. Personally I think that in many cases the language in books are better, and more interesting, when it’s written in the author’s own language, and with his or hers own words. Some books don’t even get translated to Danish, and then it’s practical being able to read English. I have read books like the perks of being a wallflower, Shovel ready, IT, Lolita. Good English skills are also very convenient when you are in foreign countries. Most countries, especially the youth, are very English talking...

...10 SIMPLE WAY IMPROVE ENGLISH 1. This is what most people would advise: read. Read anything and everything in English. You can read story books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, comics, English textbooks, instructions and ingredients on food packages, advertisements, etc. For story books, don’t force yourself to read something too difficult or something you know you won’t enjoy. Make reading fun! Read books that you ENJOY reading. I hate to read books that bore me too. 2. Watch English movies with subtitles. This would be my favorite way of learning English. Not only do I get to have a fun time watching the movie, I’d be learning new words at the same time and knowing how to pronounce them! Usually, you can get movies with English subtitles on DVDs. 3. Listen to English songs. Read the lyrics as you listen to the songs. Listen to your favorite songs and sing along to them. 4. Start a blog in English. This is one way for you to practice your writing. Blog on something that you love. If you are a fan of movies, start a blog and write about your favorite movies, your favorite characters, what you think could be improved in the movie, what new movies to expect next year, etc. Besides blogging, try joining online forums; engage in online chatting and more. 5. If you don’t want to maintain a blog, why not write to a pen pal? It’d be even more fun to have a pen pal from a different country! I used to write to other people from the US, Germany, Mexico, and even Yugoslavia. I remember...

I’ve never a finished a book until high school because I never found a book I liked considering I never tried since I didn’t have an interest in reading. Although, now I can say I like to read if I find the right book when i use to say that i hated reading. The youngest I remember writing was in 6th grade when I would write letters to my dad. I wrote letters to my dad after my parents got divorced since I didn’t get to see my dad from it. My letters would be about how much I missed him, how school was going, and how things were different. ..."Advantages & Disadvantages of Mastering the English Language and Politics" Mastering the English laguage and politics can cause a possitive and negative efffect on a person by pointing out the flaws of society and government issues. Mastering the english language enlightens one on how to survive in this society and what this government is based on. Language can cause conflict to ones emotions an thoughts about this society and government, and its history. Fredrick Douglass, Malcolm X, and Jonathan Kozol help me show how when a person lives in this society without mastering its language they are unable to properly provide for themself or others, mastering the English language educates one in many differet political aspects, an how mastering the English language can open ones eyes to the flaws in this government and society and make them have negative feelings towards it. A person is unable to properly provide for themselves or their families if they have not mastered the english language. The histroical Fredick douglass shows this in his passage " Learning to Read and Write". He states, " the though of being a slave forever began to bear heavily upon my heart. Just about this time, i got hold of a book entittled "columbian Orator." every opportunity i got i used to read this book" (147) . Douglass felt like he would never be able to be free if he didnt continue to read and educate himself. Jonothan Kozol's passage "The Human Cost of an Illiterate society" also express this issue...

...The path to english There i was on a sunny august day in st louis missouri, it was the first day of school and i was starting 5th grade my family had just moved to the U.S over the summer. I was feeling very anxious that day, i didn’t know weather i was ready for school here or not. I didn’t know the language, i didn’t know anyone, everything was just different here. It had been only few months since we moved here so i was still feeling homesick missing all my friends there, i really didn’t like being in United states at that time. There i was in a school in different country, with random people around me and not having any idea what to say. I had known very little english when i first came here, i could write a little bit and only knew few words like hey, or what's up. I came from India a non-english speaking country, to the United states ,a english speaking country. Since i didn’t even know a little bit of english they had to put me in a special class ESOL. It was a program to help the non english speakers learn how to read and write. I had a very nice teacher named Mrs. Taylor, she was an older lady in her 50’s. She was always helpful and nice to me, she’s basically the reason that today i am able to read and write and fully understand the language. I was struggling in the beginning but Mrs. Taylor helped me, she worked with me at my pace and helped me understand English better. I remember struggling through all my classes almost all the way to middle school, i wouldn’t...

Based on the coverage a language learner can see how many cumulative headwords they need to know to reach the 98% coverage need for pleasure reading (Table 2). Using the column CUMTOKEN% we can determine how many thousand words of vocabulary a student would need to read this book at each coverage percent. The advantage of analyzing unmodified texts is that it is fast, takes only a minimal knowledge of computers, and can be done by non-native English...

...English Language Forrest Partlow Unemployment HUMA215 Unit 2 Individual Project October 20, 2013 English Language I am choosing to use the English language of Britain for this paper mainly because I can speak it, read it, and understand it. Well modern English I can speak, read, and understand. I was in the Navy for 12 years. My job in the navy was a Hospital Corpsman. In the medical field we still use a lot of words that have Latin origins. This is the same generally speaking of the early English language. English broke into three categories when we are speaking about the history of the English language. There is Old English, Middle English, and Modern English. I think it funny how in the 1990’s everyone wanted tattoos of their own name on them in Old English. It is funny because if they actually tried to read some Old English they would have a hard time making any words out. So the beginning of the English language is Old English and it was developed by people of the Germanic tribes migrated to Britain. This happened before the 12th century. It had a lot of Latin, French, and Old Norse influence. While if you read it you may figure out a few words it is very different from today’s spoken language. You would know such words as he, him, for and some others. You could figure out such words as name, was, were, and come, these are just some examples. From the 12th century on into the 15th...

...The importance of learning English English is the most widely used language in the world. Therefore, having great English skills will have numerous advantages. Luckily, I have realized the importance of learning English and worked hard on it since I was a child. However, 13 years of learning English experience didn’t lead me to success, but being a person who can hardly communicate in English and definitely unable to write an essay. Once I came to the USA, I knew that I had made too many mistakes in learning English. Those mistakes are translating English into different languages, don’t learn vocabulary as much as I can, and don’t read and write enough. First of all, every language is unique. They usually have different grammar and use of vocabulary, which means learning English by translating it into different languages will lead to an inevitable defeat. For example, I have worked hard on learning a lot of vocabulary by translating them into Chinese. I thought it was a good idea to build up my vocabulary in order to read and write better. However, those translation processes were hugely disappointing. At that time, I failed to express my idea accurately by those translated vocabulary. As a consequence, good grade and improvement seemed untouchable. Also, when I either wrote or read, I had to use Chinese to think about the passage. As a result, I didn’t do it well and did it very slowly. When I came to the USA, I desperately and completely stopped translation. Just a year of time...

...TAGORE THE WORLD OVER: ENGLISH AS THE VEHICLE William Radice I delivered this speech at the Commonwealth Club in London on 22 March 2006, at an evening function entitled ‘Tagore’s Gifts to English’. The function was sponsored by the English-Speaking Union and the Royal Commonwealth Society, and masterminded by Mr Michael Marland, CBE, a retired London headteacher and keen admirer of Tagore. There were readings of poems from Gitanjali and other texts; a performance of Frank Bridge’s gloriously passionate settings for tenor voice and piano of two poems from The Gardener (composed in 1922: the poems are Nos. 29 and 30, ‘Speak to me, my love’ and ‘Dweller in my deathless dreams’); a presentation on Sriniketan and Dartington (Tagore and Elmhirst) by the The Tagoreans, an old-established London-based group; and a song and dance sequence called ‘The Golden Boat’, designed and performed by the Tagore Centre UK. Also, poem No. 9 from ‘Prantik’ was read in the original Bengali and in English, French, German and Slovenian, to illustrate the ‘third Tagore’ – not the Bengali Rabindranath, not the English Tagore, but the new and fuller impression that is emerging the world over through new translations. One particular memory I shall keep from the evening is the way the two poems I chose from Gitanjali came wonderfully alive as read by my PhD student Mayurika Chakravorty. Listening to her highly dramatic reading in her Calcutta-accented English of Nos. 48 (‘The morning...
