Esl 51 12/10/2011 Documented Argument Internet Effect on Children Children like adults crave the latest gadgets. According to the research based on 2000 families about parents’ technology ownership by cloud security firm Westcoastcloud and posted on BBC news, 16% of children owned their own laptop while 18% had a flat-screen TV on their bedroom to use for. Having technology doesn’t mean anything by itself; the important thing is to know how children are using the technology they have in their hand. Although, most parents agreed to make their children technology owners, parents still have mixed ideas how much they control what their children are doing online because children want to do what their minds ask them to do. The survey doesn’t show any solution to the problem children face and how their parents can help them. However, I believe it is very important for parents to make sure what kind of websites are their children accessing on the internet and be able to answer what their children ask them about the internet to give the support that their children need to be safe and get the most out of their technology. Maggie Atkinson, the children commissioner for England, explains how new technology could leave children lonely and have a negative impact on their lives .She also describes when students stay for after hour school by using new technology and video games, they could alienated. These days children are claiming "too many" because they spend most of their time using different kinds of technology like internet, phone, and video games and know everything found on them. As we all know children like to practice everything that they see and hear. The more they use any kind of technology the more they become the victims of technology, especially the Internet. However, some people believe that as it is very helpful for their future.
This issue becomes very controversial among different parents. So, should parents limit their children use of technology? Yes, I personally believe parents should limit their children’s use of technology. The first reason why parents should limit their children’s use of technology is because it makes children very addictive and spend more time on technology like internet rather than their school. For example, if children have access to the internet, they prefer to spend their time on social media and watching movies from the Internet rather than doing their homework. In addition to this they lose their interest to spend their time with their parents. They only imagine and dream how they can interact with technology. According to the article, “Negative Effects of
Technology on Children.” In the New York Times in March 2010, new technology is making children uninterested in their school and makes them choose entertainment. Students who spend too much time using technology like the Internet has a chance to have worse grades than those students who don’t spend too much time using technology. A study has shown that since children are doing things at the same time, they have problems focusing all of their attention on school.
According to the research, if children start texting while they are studying and at same time are checking a social network and do some other things on the Internet, they wouldn’t be able to have the capacity to focus and concentrate on their subjects. So, parents should be responsible to limit the time their children spend on the Internet. The second reason why parents should limit their children’s use of technology is because it can make children violent and obsessive due to what they see on the Internet or by using other technology. Most of these days’ movies are full of weapons like guns and unnecessary foul language usage. On the other hand, children eager to practice or implement what they have seen and what they have heard. For example, when children spend their time watching programs that show how things done or how someone has been killed or how explosive things are made; they want to practice that practically on them or on their friends.
Many shows posted on the Internet are poor role models because they show children unnecessary things. On the other side, video games allow children’s to have a feck guns and play with it.
According to the research made by Neilson Company on http://www.personal.psu.edu/djw5068/assignment%205.html how technology witnessed 8000 children’s for murder. The research also mentioned an average of 20-25 violent acts are shown on any kind of children’s program each year. So, allowing children to spend a lot of time to use any kind of technology without their parents’ involvement may encourage them to go out of control and become violent at home and at school. So, parents should take a strong action to not let this happen to their children. On the other hand, some people believe technology makes children very smart. For example, use of Internet makes students’ school life very simple because it can help them to submit their homework early and it is easy to find many references that are useful for their academics. Also, it makes them aware for any kind of new technology that created every single day. Although, some people say that, I personally disagree because children can’t judge what is important and what is not. They just see and listen to whatever is available for them on the
Internet. So, use of Internet is not the one that makes children smart unless parents help their children’s by showing important and necessary things that can help for their education and makes them competent in the future. In conclusion, parents should limit their children’s from using different kind of technology by creating a time for their children to play outside, and by creating rules that limit children use of technology. Also, parents have to make a plan with their friends to take their children out to associate with each other’s kids.
