Entering College Research Paper

A lot surprised me about college. I was homeschooled my life. Entering college was a big difference for me. Three things in particular surprised me and really got my attention, for I had assumed they were either media exaggerations or standard school conduct. One this I was surprised with was the leniency most teachers displayed. This might be an exaggeration or a trait exclusive to my school, but it definitely caught me off guard when my math teacher left an hour early, or when my Chinese teacher gave out candy for Halloween. I was prepared for teachers to be strict and punctual. This was one of those thoughts that came from the expectations of certain exaggerations commonly seen in media. The second thing to catch my attention was the

Personal Narrative: College Writing

...When entering this new semester I was stronger in some aspects of my academic abilities than others, writing, not being one of those strengths. Due to past high school experiences confidence in my writing abilities dwindled as a result of four years of poor mentoring. Developing a strong passion for the sciences and acquiring an acute fear of any English reading or writing course. My fight with comma confusion and run on sentences stunted my excitement to be enrolled in a purely writing and comprehension focused course. Within the first few weeks we were introduced to an assignment that focused on defining a word or phrase, I chose to define the word “perfection”. Unfortunately, sending myself into a self-loathing downward spiral due to the unknown degree of difficulty of this word. I struggled with the direction I wanted to go with this paper, then ran into the time engulfing task of trying to capture the ideas that I had accumulated in my head into four pages. The job of capturing these ideas and organizing them into a comprehendible paper was no easy feat, battling between my free writing thoughts and my high school English essay rules, this took me 5 days, 4 long nights, and many calls for help to...

Class Reflective Essay

...began this course, I had no idea what college writing would be like. All throughout my high school experience I was taught to write in a specific format, but all of that prior knowledge was extracted upon entering this class. I had never struggled with writing previously, but when this class began, I knew I was going to be challenged. I did not know what to expect from this course. I think I was just hoping that there would not be a drastic change. Even though there was a tremendous amount of change, this class had benefitted me the most out of all of my classes my senior year. Throughout this entire course I had learned many useful skills when it comes to writing a college level essay. I think one of the most helpful tools that I was introduced to during this semester was the website PaperRater. In previous years I just had to rely on peer editing which was not always the best method of editing. After using PaperRater I believe that my papers have advanced in vocabulary and sentence structure. Another useful tool that we were instructed to use was Noodletools. I had used this program during my freshman year, but I did not really understand how to properly use it. It has helped me keep my citations and information for my essays organized. The skill that I used most frequently was metacognition. The term metacognition refers to “the processes...

Preparing for the Workplace

...REMEMBER TO CHANGE EVERY FIVE WORDS. SHIIIIIT AID IS GOOD TO GO!!!! preparing Students for Success in College and the Workforce “We will end what has become a race to the bottom in our schools and instead spur a race to the top by encouraging better standards and assessments… And I'm calling on our nation's governors and state education chiefs to develop standards and assessments that don't simply measure whether students can fill in a bubble on a test, but whether they possess 21st century skills like problem-solving and critical thinking and entrepreneurship and creativity. That is what we'll help them do later this year -- when we finally make No Child Left Behind live up to its name by ensuring not only that teachers and principals get the funding that they need, but that the money is tied to results.” President Barack Obama Remarks to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce March 10, 2009 Last year, the President challenged states to develop standards and assessments that will help America’s children rise to the challenge of graduating from high school prepared for college and the workplace. Today, the President applauds Governors for their efforts to work together in a state-led consortium – managed by the National Governors Association (NGA) and the Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) – to develop and implement new reading and math standards that build toward college- and career-readiness. With many states well positioned to adopt these standards, the Governors initiative...

Benefits of Getting a College Degree vs Not Getting a College Degree

...Some people in today’s society believe that paying $50,000 - $200,000 to have they’re name on a little piece of paper after four years isn’t worth it, and that it is better to just go into the work field after high school to start earning a living right away. Then some argue that that piece of paper is everything because in the long run you will have a good paying job. In my opinion, that piece of paper is everything. In life you can have your house, your car, and your job taken from you but your college degree will be with you wherever you go and it’s the one thing that can’t be taken from you. The benefits of having a college degree outweighs not having a college degree by far. College education is a great tool for our self enhancement. It gives us a sneak peek at the cultures and values of the world. Subjects like history, anthropology, comparative religion, international politics, and humanities can make us a much more accommodating and sympathetic to other cultures, race and religion resulting in a better bond among international communities. By learning about others values make us able to perform at our best latter in our life contributing to sound political, business related or economic decisions; it also gives us the readiness to work internationally or even locally in a diverse work force. Math and science classes in college gives us the more than just a few basic skills to run the accounting of our life. Math and its deeper studies can help us becoming good engineers...

...for worst or better, and the way that the data is delivered was straight forward and clear cut so I was able to interpret it clearly. The information that is given in this article was well researched and delivered, and being that this was a research paper it would give good starting points for where I should begin my own research. Although this paper was focused on a limited age range (early adulthood 18-20) it was extremely thorough in retrieving data and offers many areas where you could continue the research and look more into a specific relationship type. This paper covers the opposing affects that differing stages of relationships play on drug use, heavy drinking, and smoking, but this study only focuses on the transition between graduating high school and entering college and gives a small glimpse into what the roles play later in life. The most interesting piece of data that this article had was not only does being in a relationship gives the people a protective effect but the quality of the relationship can have the opposite effect on the people involved if the relationship is going poorly. Over this entire article was very informative and also relative in the since that I had experienced most of the stage study in the paper. Curriculum Philosophy Paper

...Curriculum Philosophy Paper Patrice Bax HRWD 6713: Curriculum Design Submitted: October 6, 2012 In mathematics, there is a rule called the order of operations which instructs a student to solve certain steps first, before calculating others steps to arrive at an accurate solution to a mathematical expression. Similarly, society teaches an order of operations to life in that students are to first, matriculate through secondary education to attain foundational skills in support of man’s progression in society; second, enter into college to gain skills and knowledge to prepare for survival in society; third, graduate from college with specific jobs skills and credentials to give meaning to society; and finally, contribute to the functioning and betterment of society by successfully entering and succeeding in the workforce. Unfortunately, society is facing a detrimental problem that may signify a defect in this order of operation, because graduates are unprepared and lack the skills needed to succeed in today’s workforce. The basis of this paper is to provide clarity to the problem of unprepared graduates entering the workforce, and suggest a viable solution by offering that simulated education curriculum rooted in Social Efficiency Ideology is a practical response to the issue. Clarity of the Problem U.S. Chamber of Commerce (2012) recognizes that the toughest competition in business is the global race for talent. Plumer...

It is a major topic in many political debates, and one cannot read a newspaper or watch the evening news without eventually coming across a story about it. With all of the commotion surrounding illegal immigration, it is no surprise that many American citizens are concerned about how much it will affect their lives. The exact impact of illegal immigration is impossible to measure due to the fact that the majority of illegal immigrants are undocumented. However, it is clear that it has both negative and positive impacts on the American workforce. Whether or not one past outweighs the other is a personal opinion, but the only way to make an informed decision is to know the facts from both sides of the argument. Deviance and the Internet

...criminal law have committed a crime at this point. Even criminal deviance takes on many levels of deviance. We have the traffic tickets on the less serious note up to the murder charges on the more serious end of the spectrum. With increased internet access we have opened up opportunities to the children and adults of today who are already susceptible to deviance from the “cultural norms” and have in turn increased our own desires to cheat and plagiarize reports instead of doing the work themselves. I began my research using www.yahoo.com. For my keyword I chose “college term papers”. The results were astounding. I received 18,800,000 website hits, which were both paid and free websites. A few of the top websites are www.ghostpapers.com where you can buy a term paper, book report, thesis for college, high school and graduate school as low as $8.99 per page. There is also www.termpapershortcut.com/ which is very interesting. You let them know what type of paper you need, what the format is, and the prices are as low as $12.95 per page, but more if you need it sooner. Then there are the free websites freecollegepapers.net and www.termpapergenie.com. In my opinion, the lower class, male and female, and minorities are the ones who seem to commit most of the cheating. I think they...

Are Writing Deficiencies Creating a Lost Generation of Business Writers?”

...Are Writing Deficiencies Creating a Lost Generation of Business Writers? ZANE K. QUIBLE FRANCES GRIFFIN OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA ABSTRACT. Business professionals and instructors often view writing skills as one of the most important qualifications that employees should possess. However, many business employees, including recent college graduates, have serious writing deficiencies, especially in their ability to use standard English. As a result, American businesses spend billions of dollars annually to remediate these writing deficiencies (College Board, the National Commission on Writing for America’s Families, Schools, and Colleges, 2004). In this article, the authors examine possible reasons for these deficiencies and offer evidence that a modified context-based approach, the glossing approach, and consistent error marking can reduce the number of sentence-level errors students make. Keywords: context-based approach, grammar, punctuation, rules-based approach, writing deficiencies Copyright © 2007 Heldref Publications T hat many employers in the United States are dissatisfied with their employees’ writing skills is not a surprise to individuals who frequently peruse the professional literature in nearly any academic field or discipline (Gray, Emerson, & MacKay, 2005; Wise, 2005). Although the expressions of dismay are frequent and often strong, educators have done little to rectify the situation. Costs of Employees’ Poor Writing Skills material to...

Decided Students

...twofold: (a) to critically review research on how students’ process of decision making with respect to selecting college majors and careers relates to their persistence in college, and (b) to tease-out practical implications of this research for improving the academic advisement, long-range planning, and retention of first-year students. The majority of new students entering higher education leave their initial college of choice without completing a degree (Tinto, 1993), and national attrition rates have been increasing since the early 1980s at two-year and four-year institutions, both public and private (Postsecondary Education Opportunity, 2002). At all types of higher education institutions, including highly selective colleges and universities, the most critical period or stage of vulnerability for student attrition continues to be the first year of college (“Learning Slope,” 1991). More than half of all students who withdraw from college do so during their first year (Consortium for Student Retention Data Exchange, 1999), resulting in a first-year attrition rate of more than 25% at four-year institutions, and approximately 50% at two-year institutions (ACT, 2003). Retention research suggests that student commitment to educational and career goals is perhaps the strongest factor associated with persistence to degree completion (Wyckoff, 1999). Given the increasing trend of new students to report that their number-one goal for attending college is “preparing for an occupation”...

Managing Time as and Adult Learner

...Managing Time as an Adult Learner Many adults feel like they already have a full plate; that is to say they have as many (or more) commitments competing for their time, as they have time available. Based on a U.S military study, taking the average requirement of three college classes a semester, the adult learner can expect to add approximately eighteen hours a week of educational related activities onto their plate (Dyer, 2014). A report, issued by the National Clearinghouse Research Center in October of 2014, indicates that only one-in-three adults, returning to school, end up graduating (New, 2014). With the odds so heavily stacked against them, how can the adult learner balance work, home and school to fit in the time necessary to get a college degree? For an adult, with adult responsibilities, to be a successful student requires: undaunted commitment, discipline in focus, sacrificing of the extraneous, and the ability to effectively manage time. Much research and countless studies have been done attempting to determine the key contributing factors for success of adult learners (Tyler-Smith, 2006). The results of the studies are not only significant for the adult student, but also for the universities they are attending. The information obtained is used by Universities to modify their learning environments in an effort to promote an increase in student success rates. Statistically high adult attrition rates have a negative impact on a university’s educational planning...

Rape

...Rorie Printup CRJU 3402 Research Plan Alcohol and Rape on College Campuses Statement of Interest Many studies look at rape and alcohol on college campuses separately, while others look at the effect that alcohol has on rape. It is estimated that one fifth to one fourth of all women experience a completed or attempted rape during their four to five year college career (McMahon 2010). Too many women are victimized on a daily basis on college campuses, a place people go to better themselves, all while believing they are safe. Reality is, rape can happen to any woman, at any time, on any campus. There are classes given on almost every campus about to how women should protect themselves from violent acts such as rape, but how many women actually attend? What are women’s actual perceptions on rape on campus? Are women aware of the risk of rape on campus? What effects does alcohol have on the chance of committing a rape, and what effects does it have on the probability of getting raped? The objective of the paper is to find out how much women really know about the chances of getting raped, the proper way to protect their selves from getting raped, and what effect drinking can have on rape. Literature Search on Galileo While conducting research for this project, EBSCOhost and ProQuest were used. Both databases were had many articles and journals pertaining to alcohol and rape on college campuses. The first database used through Galileo was EBSCOhost. When using EBSCOhost...
