ASSIGNMENT #1: ENTREPRENEURIAL LEADERSHIP
Introduction
This paper analyzes and describes the founding leaders, their leadership styles, and major business principles. It also describes founding leaders with profit orientated and social responsibility orientated approaches. Finally, it gives resources or tools available through Small Business Administration (SBA) and Service Corps of Retired Executive (SCORE) that would be most useful to the type of entrepreneurial approach identified with.
Founding Leaders, Leadership Styles and Major Business Principles
In the profit oriented leadership style, in which the primary goal is to provide a product or service to consumers and to make a profit, the founding leader is Adam Smith. Adam Smith is identified as the father of capitalism. His leadership style is based on the capitalist model of Laissez Faire. Laissez-Faire leadership style is a non-authoritarian leadership style.
Laissez faire leaders try to give the least possible guidance to subordinates, and try to achieve control through less obvious means. Capitalism is an economic system in which the primary motive is to make a profit with little or no regards for the welfare of the population. For example Adam Smith said, “Nobody but a beggar chooses to depend chiefly upon the benevolence of his fellow-citizens. Even a beggar does not depend upon it entirely” (Smith, 2005, p.18).
Adam Smith described the concept of capitalism in his book, The Wealth of Nations, published in 1776. He believed that an economy is best regulated by “invisible hand” of capitalism. Adam Smith stated, “Every individual necessarily labors to render the annual revenue of the society as great as he can. He generally, indeed, neither intends to promote the public interest, nor knows how much he is promoting it. By preferring the support of domestic to that of foreign industry, he intends only his own security; and by directing that industry in such a manner as its produce may be of the greatest value, he intends only his own gain, and he is in this, as in many other cases, led by an invisible hand to promote an end which was no part of his intention. Nor is it always the worse for the society that it was no part of it. By pursuing his own interest he frequently promotes that of the society more effectually than when he really intends to promote it. I have never known much good done by those who affected to trade for the public good” (Joyce, 2001, n/p).
Founding Leaders, Leadership Styles and Major Principles of Social Responsibilities.
In the social responsibility oriented leadership style in which the primary goal is to make a positive impact on society while providing a product or service to consumers and to make a profit, the founding leader of this model is Robert Owen. During his life he ran a mill in New Lanark, Scotland, setup a colony called New Harmony in the USA, and was one of the founders of socialism and the co-operative movement.
His leadership style is manifested in his general belief that character is formed by the effects of the environment upon the individual. Hence, education was of central importance to the creation of rational and humane character, and the duty of the educator was to provide the wholesome environment, both mental and physical, in which the child could develop. A co-operative is a group of people acting together to meet the common needs and aspirations of its members, sharing ownership and making decisions democratically. Co-operatives are not about making big profits for shareholders, but creating value for customers (Owen, 2000, n/p).
Two Leading Entrepreneurs and their Approaches to Profit and Social Responsibility.
A pair of leading entrepreneurs whose approach is profit oriented is Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Larry Page and Sergey Brin are the founding leaders of Google. These founders are currently leaders in internet search technology. Their leadership style is a mixture of Democratic and Laissez-Faire approach.
A Democratic leadership is a type of leadership style in which members of the group take a more participative role in the decision-making process. Researchers have found that this leadership style is usually one of the most effective and leads to higher productivity, better contributions from group members and increased group morale. Participative leadership style is a leadership style in which members of the group also take a more participative role in the decision-making process.
Laissez- Faire leadership style is a non-authoritarian leadership style. Laissez faire leaders try to give the least possible guidance to subordinates, and try to achieve control through less obvious means. Google founders believe motivation and selecting high quality employees is what makes their leadership a success (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2010).
A leading entrepreneur whose approach is social responsibility oriented is Blake Mycoskei. Blake Mycoskei is the founder of TOMS Shoes Company. Blake’s leadership style can be classified as democratic. He believes that a leader should lead by example. His business model has given a new meaning to corporate social responsibility. He founded TOMS Shoes Company not just to make profit, but to give back to society by helping the needy. For example, he made his company to match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of shoes given to a child in need after visiting Argentina and found so many children had no shoes to protect their feet (Mycoskie, 2008).

Leadership Styles with which are mostly identified I subscribe to entrepreneurial democratic leadership style. I believe in the style based on social responsibility in which the primary goal is to make a positive impact on society while providing a product or service to consumers and to make a profit.
Resources Available to Small Business Administration (SBA) and Service Corps of Retired Executive (SCORE) The three resources available are (1) financial assistance involving the guaranteeing of loans made by private lenders to small business owners. SBA also provides direct financial assistance to special financial assistance to small businesses in the event of disasters. (2) Management training consulting involving providing training and consultant to start-up small business owners to efficiently manage their businesses (3) support in securing government contract (Boone & Kurtz, 2011). These three available resources or tools are very important for the small business owner because it protects and helps the small business from failing due to the lack of proper management and inadequate financing
Service Corps of Retired Executive (SCORE) is a partner of SBA. It also provides counseling and workshops for small business owners. SCORE members are experts in various aspects of business. These three available resources or tools are very important for the small business owner because it helps the small business from failure due to the lack of proper management and inadequate financing.

Conclusions
The information presented in this document supports the following conclusions:
The leadership approaches presented in this paper are not mutually exclusive. That is, a leader could subscribe to either one of these economic principles, capitalism or socialism.
Finally, leading entrepreneurs are either profit oriented or social responsibility oriented. A leading entrepreneur could possess both characteristics.
