...Microbiology An environmental study was conducted at Westchester Community College to observe the different types of micro bacteria growing on campus. Several different locations on the second floor of the Science Building were sampled as well as samples that were collected from a living organism. The samples were given a nutrient source and incubated for a period of one week. The samples were then observed for growth; slides were created, stained and then studied to determine morphology of organisms. Materials - Sterile cotton swab - Water - Beaker - Slides - 1 Blood Agar plate and 2 Nutrient Agar plates - A Microscope - Emersion oil - Incubator - Refrigerator - Loop - Slide Holder (Clothes pin) - Bunsen burner - Flint - Gram Staining Agents (Crystal Violet, Iodine, Decolorizer, Safranin) - Wax pencil (for documentation) Procedures Collection of Environmental Samples - Sterile cotton swab was taken and wet with water - A 1” sample was taken of the specific locations listed in the table - The applicator was then placed back into the paper container for transport back to the lab. This was done to preserve the integrity of the specimen - The sample was then smeared onto one half of an agar plate. The two samples from the biological specimen were smeared onto a blood agar plate and the specimens taken from the environment were placed on a nutrient agar plate. - The cotton applicator was then disposed of The agar plates were placed in the incubator...

...Precious Tombri Mrs. Omoro HHG- 4M1 May 3, 2012 Environmental Deprivation Over the years I have never come across a person who has not been deprived in some way or the other. Deprivation is something we all experience on a daily basis, which can range from something as simple as not getting enough sleep to more detrimental events that scars history, for example the fight for women’s rights and equality for all races. A person can be deprived in many ways, whether it stems from the environment or their physical well being. Many people constitute environmental deprivation as one who has been deprived of opportunities and stimulation needed for growth and development. Being kept in captivity can also have the same adverse effect on a person’s progress. There are well known countries that face these destitute issues every day, from poor plumbing service, contaminated water, un-breathable air and little to no housing. People who grow up in these situations develop Stockholm syndrome which enables them to be oblivious to their surroundings. Environmental deprivation does not only affect the poor, it also affects the wealthy as well, but not in the sense of poverty. In the case of the wealthy, it produces a disconnection with the environment as well as society. Studies have shown that long term effects on children who are raised in stressful and/ or environmentally deprived atmosphere has immensely impacted their development. Most children who are affected by these circumstances...

...Population is becoming a very scary issue that we face today. I call it an issue because as population grows so does the responsibility to take care of these people. In order for a human to survive it needs many certain resources. These resources include feeding, clothing, housing and many others such as medical care and education. Granite only the first three resources that I mentioned are absolutely necessary to survive but the others amongst many more is what we deemed necessary for a human to live a long successful life. Key word long, a lot of advancements have been made in medicine to not only prolong life, but by making it much easier for women to bear children. More people are being born and less people are dying leaving the population at a steady increase up. On a broad view this could be viewed as a good thing. More grandparents are living to see their great grandchildren and more mind are being shaped to better the world. However we run into problems because our resources can’t possible keep up with the growth of humans. There are 150 babies born each minute around the world that means each day the planet takes on the responsibility of 150 more people for an average of 85 years. The growth of crops and material is nowhere near that exponential meaning that sooner or later we will inevitable run out of resources. To compensate for that humans have engineered chemicals to make out resources grow better, faster and stronger. These chemicals are sprayed of our crops...

...School Environment Analysis Essay Grand Canyon University: EDA 575 September 25, 2013 School Environment Analysis Essay Environmental /contextual factors refer to the characteristics of the learning environment that influences the effectiveness of instruction. They can be distributed into community factors, school and classroom environments and individual student characteristics (Harris, 2013). Such factors can have an effect in the teaching and learning process. After researching it is evident that these factors affect all schools in the country. Although every school is different due to their geographic, socioeconomic, ethnicity, schools and student characteristics, all school have the same factors that affect the teaching and learning process (McDoniel, 2009). Keeping these factors in mind and looking at my school, I would have to agree that these are important elements that influence the difficulties we face. The school is located in a rural area but is adjacent to a large city; in fact it is our state capital. Although the school is located in a rural area the students that attend our school are not necessarily students that live around the area. We have a mixed population. All students are bussed or driven to school. We do not have what is considered a neighborhood school. We get a population from nearby rural areas and from close by outer city population or urban. The school promotes attendance and provides incentives for students that have perfect...

...Environmental Factors Paper In today’s society companies gain a competitive edge by exploring in the domestic and global markets. Businesses that operate at domestic and global levels will eventually have to deal with issues and factors that may have some type of effect on the daily operations. Within the domestic market there are some things that makes it easier to launch the product such as geography, customer needs, demographics, and methods of distribution. To be able to capture a better marker share globalization is put in place so that new marketing shares can open up new ventures for sales. Domestic and global marketing The organization that I am most familiar with that conducts domestic and global marketing is the Toyota Motor Corporation. Toyota is the world's largest automaker (The Associated Press, 2013). Toyota is one of the top-selling brands in America and we are committed to continuous improvement in everything we do, along with breakthrough products for the future (Toyota Motor North America, Inc., 2013) The factors that impact on the marketing strategies of Toyota Motor Corporation are trade practices, demographics and physical infrastructure, cultural differences, social responsibilities and ethics, political systems and technology. These factors are challenges that effect the normal functioning of business organizations. Global economic interdependence and trade agreements Due to the influence of global economic interdependence Toyota has had to purchase...

While Colney and Pitts as a company will benefit many people with their medicine. There will be some irreversible repercussions to the Kikuyu tribe as well as the environment. Although there are precautionary measures that may be in place, once the project is put in place this area will never be the same. When exploring the thought of environmental justice one would have to recognize the stakeholders. This would also lead one to weigh the pros and cons to actually find which has the most to gain and which has the most to lose. In this situation the stakeholders are the Kikuyu tribe, Colney and Pitts, International Center for Ethno Botanical Research and Eco Smile. All of these entities have a direct connection and impact on the other. Kikuyu Tribe The Kikuyu tribes are natives to the Aberdares mountain range. The impact of the development of this land will not only change their lives, but it will also alter their culture. As a people the Kikuyu tribe has lived on this land for centuries. Colney and Pitts have made some offers that give the tribe all options except for leaving things as they are. First of all the Kikuyu people have already discovered uses for the trees that the pharmaceutical company is wanting to make money from. These...

Health promotion & maintenance was discussed with mother on the harmful and potential deadly effects secondhand smoking can cause on her infant. The mother was aware on the effects of smoking around children but thought it was “okay” since her boyfriend smokes outside and never around the baby. The mother was educated on the harmful chemicals her boyfriend still carries when near or around the baby and how it spreads throughout the house. The mother reported not having any conciliation the effects it had on her baby even though the boyfriend did not smoke near the infant. The mother was very receptive of the information and quite shocked the harmful effects secondhand smoking had on her infant even while not smoking next to her infant. ...Hazardous Waste Regulation Paper University of Phoenix – ENV 320 Megan Lade April 18, 2016 Hazardous Waste Regulation Paper “As late as the Civil War, pigs, goats, and stray dogs were free to roam the streets as "biological vacuum cleaners." In fact, the need to have animals available to eat the garbage was such a concern that Charleston, West Virginia enacted an ordinance in 1834 to prohibit vulture hunting because they ate the city's garbage” (Roberts, n.d.). Hazardous waste, in the US, is created by our rapid growth and need for continued development and improvements of various industrial technologies and products. Lawrence Wang stated in his article, Hazardous Waste Management (n.d.), that the term ‘hazardous waste’ refers to any raw material, intermediate product, final product, spent waste, accidental spill, leakage etc that are hazardous to human health and the environment (while being ignitable, corrosive, reactive, toxic, infectious, carcinogenic and/or radioactive). What Is RCRA & CERCLA? The two key regulations that govern hazardous waste in the US would be the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RSRA) and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act. (CERCLA). In 1976 the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) was developed to control hazardous waste from, what the EPA coined, the ‘cradle-to-grave’. This act covers the generation, transportation, treatment, storage and disposal of hazardous waste. Its main goal was...

...Water Quality Standards Catherine Ortiz Everest Water Quality Standards Having water quality standards is important because it helps ensure that the water condition is good. Depending on what the water will be used for; the standards change. For example, the standard for drinking water is a lot higher than the standards for water that we would use to water our lawn. “The EPA has listed 167 chemicals and substances as criteria pollutants.”(Wright & Boorse, 2014, p. 515) These chemicals are not allowed to remain in the water. The water would need to be conditioned to make it meet the standards of not having any of those chemicals and substances in it. “The list identifies the pollutant and then recommends concentrations for freshwater, saltwater and human consumption.”(Wright & Boorse, 2014, p. 515) Criteria pollutants are chemicals found in water. “The majority of these are toxic chemicals, but many are also natural chemicals or conditions that describe the state of the water, such as nutrients, hardness (a general measure of dissolved calcium and magnesium salts) and pH (a measure of the acidity of the water).”(Wright & Boorse, 2014, p. 515) The maximum contaminant levels or MCL are the levels of toxins that are at acceptable amounts, found in the water. For example, “the CMC and CCC values for arsenic are 340 µg/L and 150 µg/L (1 µg/L = part per billion) for freshwater bodies and 69 µg/L and 36 µg/L for saltwater bodies. The drinking water MCL concentration...
