...STUDENT'S NAME: Christopher Williams SUBJECT: Recycling GENERAL PURPOSE: To persuade SPECIFIC PURPOSE: To persuade the audience to become more active environmentalists. Specifically, to convince the audience to begin recycling household products and buying recycled goods. I. Introduction: A. Attention-getting device: "DID YOU TAKE OUT THE TRASH?" How many times have our parents asked us that question? Probably more than most of us care to remember. Well, one day many of you will have children and most of the basics of parenting will remain the same. However, one may be changing. Instead of asking if your "little angel" took out the trash, you will probably be asking if he or she sorted the trash. B. Preview: If you are wondering what I mean by sort the trash, listen to these staggering environmental statistics: In one year, the United States produces 160 million tons of garbage, and that only includes what is legally dumped. Really, how much in 160M tons? It's enough metal to build two million automobiles, enough wood to construct a million homes, enough paper to publish all the daily newspapers in the country, enough aluminum to rebuild the entire American air fleet 71 times, and would fill 11 million garbage trucks. We're drowning in it. Unless Americans take a more responsible role in recycling today, we are going to all be dead tomorrow! So, sort your trash. It is easy to recycle most household products and it will only take a little of your time. II. Body A. Recycling...

...My Le Professor Robb A. Bajema EL 100 April 26th, 2013 Air pollution in China Air pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems in China. According to a new analysis, approximately 1.2 million people die prematurely from exposure to outdoor air pollution in China. A study by Greenpeace and Beijing University focusing on four Chinese cities estimates the number of people dying prematurely from air pollution is close to three times that killed by traffic accidents. The air has been classified as hazardous to human health, at its worst hitting pollution levels 25 times that considered safe in the US. The entire city is blanketed in a thick grey smog that smells of coal and stings the eyes, leading to official warnings to stay inside. The majority of the air pollution in China is generated by the burning of coal to generate electric power.  China gets 80 percent of electricity and 70 percent its total energy from coal, much of it polluting high-sulphur coal. Around six million tons of coal is burned everyday to power factories, heat homes and cook meals. Jerry Goodell wrote in Natural History magazine: “In China coal is everywhere. It’s piled up on sidewalks, pressed into bricks, and stacked neat the back doors of homes. It’s stockpiled into small mountains in open fields, and carted around behinds bicycles and wheezing locomotives. Plumes of coal smoke rise from rusty stacks on every urban horizon. Soot covers every windowsill and ruins the collar...

...If you were to turn on your TV, you would most likely be greeted by a commercial telling its viewer to eat healthy. In order to achieve a better lifestyle and become more healthy the advertisement would suggest that its viewers convert their diets to consuming more organic food rather than conventional foods. Then only problem with this is there are no truly hard-hitting facts that can prove one production method of food is significantly superior to the other in promoting overall wellness. In this essay, I am going to explain some of the issues and ideals with organic production, so that you may have a better understanding of the struggle between deciding to eat organic or to continue eating conventionally grown food. Many people do not even know the difference between organic and inorganic food, they only go by what they see on the label of the food they are purchasing. The major difference in farming organic food as opposed to conventional is the limited use of pesticides. Conventional farming relies heavily on pesticides, growth hormone usage, and applying other chemicals that may be potentially harmful to the consumer of the plant or animal meat. The biggest issue with the conventional farming is the use of the pesticide DDT, which has been proven to be the cause of the widespread thinning of bird eggs, and a sudden drop in the bald eagle and peregrine falcon population (Organic Food Exposed). Rather than using pesticides, organic farmers allow plants to produce their own...

...Environment assignment number one Beluga whale case study Omar Soliman The degradation of beluga population at the St. Lawrence Estuary derives as a direct result of Anthropogenic factors. Severe and sudden changes in climate are undesirably affecting the oxygen saturation within the waters, and hence negatively affect beluga respiration patterns. The main concern with the experiment is that there might be other organisms that are newly introduced and flourish on behalf of the native beluga whales, and as a result deplete their current oxygen saturation levels. In this experiment, different kinds of algal groups will be observed. The reason why algal groups were chosen was because of their ability to considerably affect oxygen saturation levels, and the fact that they favor warmer climates. The following measurements must be taken. Primarily, a sample of deceased carcasses will be sufficient to measure oxygen intake. Blood samples and extracts will determine exactly if they are respiring naturally or not, and even indicate whether the quality of oxygen saturation has been affected. Secondly, devices that should measure oxygen saturation within the habitat must be deployed. This will give a much more reliable answer, in the case that the sampled whales show significant distortion in results. This could be in the case that the whales had a respiratory disease that affected them, or their blood stream might have been polluted with toxins that might have lowered the oxygen concentration...

I will also discuss the changes if any are needed to improve institutional management. As the reader you will learn what secure custody methods are and how it is affected by the environment. If there are any improvements that can be made I will discuss them also. THE ENVIROMENT Not at all like home, is prison not the place to enjoy life. Inside the overcrowded, dirty, concrete walls danger lurks. Hundreds of troubled people are housed together living their lives. Prisoners always have to protect themselves from other inmates whom are violent and have no care for others. The management and custody is influenced by the environment in many ways. Most of the contraband that is found in prisons is from too close of relations between inmates and staff. There is also mare leniency given to some inmates in these situations. It is certain that drugs weapons and sexual relations can change the safety and structure of the prison environment. There are things that can be done to ensure this type of misconduct is seen less. There will always be criminals and people being sent away to jail/prison. It’s very expensive to keep building facilities to hold all the inmates. Going back to faculty having close...

Prison Enviroment

...How would you define prison environment? Prison environment is cramped and confined and a dangerous environment. There are many inmate customs, etiquette or rules to abide by, or a convicted individual may be subjected to physical harm or death. The most obvious characteristic of the prison environment is the absence of privacy. The absence of privacy is a deliberate punishment, lavatories are within the individual cells are within three feet of the individual’s cellmate. It is difficult if not impossible for an inmate to be completely alone during incarceration, there are only three places an inmate can be at any time, his or her cell, the common housing area, or on the yard (Foster, 2006). How does prison environment influence institutional management and custody? There are many cliques in the prison environment generally separated by race or gang affiliation. These cliques influence the institutional management and custody in a variety of ways. General management and daily interaction of inmates must be respectful and sensitive to the race factor. Strategies were developed to combat prison gangs, these strategies include; segregation, isolation of gang leaders, jacketing or labeling and categorizing gang members for intelligence purposes, deprogramming, and placement of gang members in high-security prisons. Special corrections officer response teams were formed to manage inmates. These teams are known as Special Operations Response Team or SORT teams (Foster, 2006)...
