...The present environmental condition of Bangladesh is not equally balanced at all. Severe air, water and sound pollution are threatening human health, environment and economic growth of Bangladesh. The most environmental problem is water pollution. The water pollution caused due to industrialization. The underground water of Bangladesh has been polluted due to arsenic. Water pollution creates serious health hazard for Bangladesh. The most dangerous threat emanating from environmental degradation is the arsenic contamination of ground water. The main industrial areas of Bangladesh are at Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, and Bogra districts. The mostly contributing industries for water pollution are pulp and paper, pharmaceuticals, metal processing, food industry, fertilizer, pesticides, dyeing and painting, textile, tannery etc. Everyday approximately 700 tanneries of Dhaka city are discharging about 16,000 cubic meters of toxic wastes. The Department of Environment (DOE) has listed 1,176 factories that cause pollution throughout the country. Water pollution percentage of most five industrial sectors of Bangladesh in the year 2001 is shown below: **Water Pollution Percentage of most Five Industrial Sectors of Bangladesh in the Year 2001 Source: Research Work by Islam Faisal on “Industrial Pollution in Bangladesh” in the year 2002. ...Environmental Problems The poisoning of the world's land, air, and water is the fastest-spreading disease of civilisation. It probably produces fewer headlines than wars, earthquakes and floods, but it is potentially one of history's greatest dangers to human life on earth. If present trends continue for the next several decades, our planet will become uninhabitable. Overpopulation, pollution and energy consumption have created such planet-wide problems as massive deforestation, ozone depletion, acid rains and the global warming that is believed to be coused by the greenhouse effect. The seas are in danger. They are filled with poison: industrial and nuclear waste, chemical fertilisers and pesticides. The Mediterranean is already nearly dead; the North Sea is following. The Aral Sea is on the brink of extinction. If nothing is done about it, one day nothing will be able to live in the seas. Every ten minutes one kind of enimal, plant or insect dies out for ever. If nothing is done about it, one million species that are alive today will have become extinct twenty years from now. Air population is a very serious problem. In Cairo just breathing the air is life threatening- equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. The same holds true for Mexico City and 600 cities of the former Soviet Union. Industrial enterprises emit tons of harmful substunces. These emissions have disastrous consequences for our planet. They are the main reason for the greenhouse effect and acid...

... 2.1 What are the important environmental problems in Mongolia today? 2.2 What are the biggest changes in the environment in Mongolia? 2.3 How can we solve some of the environmental problems in UB? 1.1 What are the important environmental problems in Mongolia today? The environment is everything around us. It is the air, water, land, climates and so on. A clean, well balanced environment has far reaching effects over all life forms and mankind. However, Mongolians can’t keep the environmental balance in recent times. Thus, it is causing serious negative effects such as air and water pollution, deforestation, desertification and land degradation. I think that the worst problems now affecting Mongolia are pollution and deforestation. People say that Mongolia was called ‘A land of blue sky’ in 1970s. Nowadays, air pollution is one of the facing issues to our country, especially the capital city. Thermal power plants, ger district, and old vehicle smoke are the main factors to pollute air. Air pollution in UB is increasing year after year. Especially in winter time, smoke produced by the ger districts represents 60 percent. The present survey shows that Ulaanbaatar is one of the most polluted cities in the world and its harmful elements are 10 times higher than the Mongolian Air Quality Standards and 6-7 times higher than the World Health Organization targets. Water pollution is one of the important environmental problems in Mongolia because the water supply...

...1.0 Significant of Study This study is significant on discussing about how freight transport would bring to critical environmental issue to the society. 2.0 Problem Statement Freight transport has been identified that are causing three major problems, which are stated as below, (1) Increases of the road freight transport increase environmental issues along, (2) Some controversy relationship issue between transport growth and economic development, environmental and political factors, (3) Emission rise of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Hydrocarbons (HC), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Carbon Dioxide (CO²) worsen the greenhouse effect. 2.1 Road freight transport and environmental issues. The freight transport in Europe by road, rail and waterway together has grown by about 60 per cent since 1970; especially road transport has more than doubled, while rail and waterway still remained static. In this case, there is involving an increasing number of road freight traffic that could cause towards the increasing of environmental problem. For a case in point, when heavy goods vehicles are being used to transfer goods from a point of origin to another destination, it could be leaking out pollutant material and energy emission that would be harmful to humans as well as flora and fauna. 2.2 Controversy relationship issue The relationships between transport growth and economic development are significantly different from those linking the economy to the energy sector generally. The energy...

...I think that one of the biggest environmental challenges is that the earth’s population and growth cannot be sustained by our limited resources left on earth. We humans are getting to the point where we are consuming, harvesting and using more and more resources then we physically need for everyday living. For example, people are buying phones, iPods, tablets, laptops etc. and when they become out of date or out of fashion, they simply end up in the trash can or in a drawer never to be used again. There is no problem with getting a new phone, except when it is still in perfect working condition. Humans are just using up earth’s resources without actually considering the consequences. Up to date, 1/3 of the earth’s resources have been consumed. At this rate, our children’s children might not even have a world left to live in. I think that a suitable solution for the problem should simply be that humans must only be allowed to buy 99% necessary items for their everyday life. Why? Because did you know that 99% of all “stuff” is trashed. So that percentage seems suitable. So for example, you may only have one phone per person and may only get an upgrade every few set years and if lost, stolen or broken by simply not looking after it, then and only then may they get a new phone. I understand that this policy will be difficult to maintain, but the benefits could include relief or cease to problems like obesity, hoarding...

...Basic Issues in Environmental Science What do you understand by the terms environment, ecosystem and development? 1 Key themes to the study of Environmental Science are: • Human Population growth is the major contributor to environmental problems • Sustainability is the key to future availability of resources and environmental consequences • Global perspective is needed to solve many environmental problems • Industrial development and urbanization have serious environmental consequences • People and nature are interrelated and share a common history • Any solution to environmental issues requires consideration of both knowledge from science and values 2 Population Growth Most of the environmental problems (such as air pollution, waste generation etc) result from high population growth. An urban world has many negative impacts: •Rivers and coast lines are affected •Agricultural areas •Loss are affected of endangered species •Wetlands are filled in; and so forth. 3 Population Growth is causing the expansion of urban areas and industrial growth Also affecting sustainability: At present living environmental resources are being harvested more than its replenishment rate— what will happen in future? Can you define the following terms? • Sustainable resource harvest • Sustainable ecosystem 4 Understanding the concept of sustainable development • First defined in ‘Our Common Future’, a 1987 report of the World...

...Support for Environmental Protection: The Role of Moral Norms Paul C. Stern National Research Council Thomas Dietz George Mason University I. Stanley Black Illinois Environmental Protection Agency A theoretical model is presented that traces support for environmental protection to a social-psychological process involving the activation of moral norms against harming innocent people. In a preliminary test of the model's social-psychological hypotheses, judgments about the moral obligations of industry with respect to hazardous chemicals were found to depend both on awareness of harmful consequences to people and on ascription of responsibility for those consequences to industry; government, however, was held to be morally obligated to act even if it was not responsible for the harm. Suggestions are offered for using the model to study the determinants of changing public opinion on the environment, the tactics of advocacy groups in environmental policy conflicts, and the process that mobilizes pressure for political causes in the absence of tangible group interests. The last two decades have brought about substantial changes in the environmental policies of most Western industrial nations. These changes are due in large part to the effective mobilization of public support by the enviThe authors thank Jane Phillips for assistance with data analysis and the Academic Computing Service and Graduate School of George Mason University for research support. ...Environmental Fundamentals ENV 100 September 9, 2013 Environmental Fundamentals For a number of years, the planet and its environment have strived to meet the demands of the increasing growth in populations, global warming, and altered habitats, which has produced a global impact on the sense of balance between nature and man. The struggles amongst the environment do not affect one group of individuals or living entity; the whole planets population is concerned by environmental troubles. Each living entity on the planet may affect the environment. In order for individuals to preserve the planet, assistant in resolving environmental problems, and attain sustainability of the planet as it grows, a person should know the fundamental principles of environmental science. Environmental science may be described as the study of human connections with the environment. It is the interdisciplinary subject that blends knowledge from several disciplines such as geography, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, economics, cultural anthropology, sociology (particularly demography, the study of populations), natural resource management, engineering, agriculture, law, ethics, and politics (Berg & Hager, 2009, p1.4). Science and Technology effect the Environment Science and technology affect environmental challenges and resolutions in today’s culture. Science and technology both support humanity by assisting in the advancement of new innovations for surviving, but likewise...

...* Moral Issues In Business * Environmental Protection Why Is The Issue of Environment Crucial To Us Today? The resources of this planet are finite and limited – as also its capacity to absorb and dispose of all the waste and garbage we generate. ‘Growth’ ‘Progress’ and ‘Development’ have spelt out one thing: increased consumption of material goods. Increased consumption of material goods has led to irreversible exploitation of natural resources: wood, fossil fuels, water to mention only a few. Rapid industrialization and global trends ↓ Grave problems of ecological imbalance and environmental degradation Environmental destruction is the result of man’s interference with Nature. We all require clean air, fresh, unpolluted water and a healthy habitat. But we also want large houses, all the latest gadgets, big cars and all other material amenities. Modern industry has provided us with unprecedented material prosperity. It has also created unparalleled environmental threats to us and our future generations. Modern technology has enabled us to manipulate and control nature – e.g. quick yielding seeds, artificial rain, BT vegetables and cereals, multiple crops etc. But this has led to increased pollution and severe depletion of natural resources. - Pollutants are pumped into the air - Toxic wastes are produced and dumped into soil, water and seas Major problems facing the world in the 21st century: - Population growth - Global...
