...I shall be comparing Skyfall (2012) to Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011) both in the spy genre of films. I will be focusing on the way both films portray the differences in roles between male and female characters. I chose Skyfall from the 007 series; due to the fact M (Judi Dench) plays a more significant role within the film. It also takes a different approach on the character of Eve Moneypenny (Naomie Harris), as she is shown doing fieldwork alongside Bond (Daniel Craig) at the start of the film. Of course like any other Bond film, Skyfall also includes women who 007 will form a ‘relationship’ with (normally ending in their demise). I will be discussing if women in Skyfall are shown in a stereotypical and perhaps borderline sexiest way. My other choice of film, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol also stars female characters, although they have a more predominant role throughout the film then Skyfall. One of Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) team members is Jane (Paula Patton) and she is one of the main leading characters. Till around halfway in the film, a primary antagonist is Sabine Moreau (Lea Seydoux). It could still be said that these two characters, despite having a big role within the film, have been somewhat subjected to being portrayed in an idealistic way of women throughout the film. Although there is merit and an appeal to having Bond potentially step outside of the dominant identity, this drastic shift could potentially hurt the franchise. This is not a knock on progressing society, nor meant to an obstacle in the way of promoting racial or gender equality. The character James Bond is written to be an elite, experienced agent with an upper hand because of his social status. His background and social privilege allow him to be portrayed with the dominance he exhibits in the movies. The franchise relies too much on Bond’s social status that if it were to change, the franchise would be in danger of ruining the legacy it’s built over the last 50 years. I don’t expect Eon Productions to experiment and jeopardize this. At this time, the world is not ready for a Black James Bond, or a woman James Bond. The change of Bond to either colored or woman is too drastic of a shift from his dominant narrative. Having Bond “be anything but Bond” erases the history that Bond has accumulated over the years. Simply put, Bond is meant to be a white, socially privileged man. When attempting to cast a new James Bond that does not play into the dominant narrative, it’s important to consider Bond’s relationship in regards to people of color and women.
