These are the descriptions, understandings and different backgrounds of the following types of discriminations. If an individual is left out or disadvantaged because of one or more of these factors, then they are being discriminated against and their rights are protected under the (equality act).
DISABILITIES- Disabilities is a way that people can If a health and social care setting (such as a school) does not have wheelchair access into the building or does not have access to higher floors in terms of a lift or other access, then this is discrimination.
AGE- This is a process of becoming older. If an individual is disadvantaged in a job because of their age then this is discrimination. Some companies may not hire older people in their 40’s because they may not be able to carry out tasks that younger people may be able to.
SOCIAL CLASS- Social class refers to the upper class, middle class and lower class. The class an individual belongs to depends on their wealth or family name/status. If an individual is being placed into a care home the type they get placed in will be determined on what they can afford. If they are of higher class, they will be able to afford a more expensive one with better facilities.
SEXUALITY- This is the preferences of an individual. For example, a company may ask on an application form the sexuality of an individual and if the individual is homosexual (gay) then a company may not hire them. This could be because older generations are not always comfortable with different sexualities.

LABELLING- Labelling is similar to stereotyping and gives individuals names or puts them into a group depending on certain actions. Labels can be like calling people aggressive, emotional or

...26th May 2014 Personal reflection on Equality and Diversity by Julia Hill I presently work as a NAPPI Trainer/Auditor (non-abusive psychological and physical interventions) for Elmcare. Elm care is a company who own homes where people with Learning disabilities and challenging behaviours live and they are supported as required and encouraged to live a normal as life as possible. I am responsible for delivering the training to all the staff that have any contact with the service users in any way to promote a safe working environment. It was established in 1995 and is a leading provider of training and consultancy in the principles of positive behaviour support. In addition to their subject specialism, the educational value of their services is central to their success. Services include direct training at three levels of intervention; onsite training, open workshop delivery and the development of trainers. I am currently trained to teach level 1 and level 2 and I will be completing the level 3 in June this year. The most important contribution is identified in their successes.
