What do you think is the importance of Eric and how does Priestley present him? How does he change throughout the play?
At the start of the play we see Eric as a naïve alcoholic who seems to want to follow his father into his rich and successful business. We see Eric as immature and at the start of the play we see his anxiety, as if he knows that something will go wrong that night. As Eric and his family learn more about his shocking relationship with Eva, he seems to undergo a dramatic change in which he accepts responsibility for his vile treatment of Eva and breaks away from the capitalist limitations that his parents have set him. Towards the end of the play we see Eric agree with the inspector, who seems to be the righteous view of morality and also agree with Sheila who has undergone the most dramatic change and has accepted social responsibility forever.
In order for us to recognise Eric’s change, his flaws first have to made abundant to the audience. Priestly obliges through the stage directions he set for Eric. He describes him as “not quite at ease” showing that he could be uncomfortable at the prospect of an evening with his mother and father or more likely that he is worried, that events with regards to Eva will be revealed. Priestly also describes Eric as “half shy, half assertive”. This seemingly duel personality, could highlight Eric’s drinking problems, which through drunkenness, has left him unsure of himself and without a set personality. From this we see how unsure Eric is of himself. His character is living in a family of wealthy Capitalists but unlike Sheila he is not “pleased with life” but rather quite the opposite. This only highlights his problems and hints to the reader that throughout the book, Eric’s true feelings of unhappiness and anxiousness will be revealed.
At the start of the play we see how trapped Eric is. Eric

...Killing Them Softly Art is extremely hard to create if you are trying to tell something extremely specific to current times, people, and places, if you succeed and people seem to see the same vision, you have achieved something, if they find something you did not expect, you have achieved something greater. However Killing Them Softly does not reach the certain heights it set to, instead it lies somewhere near a heavy-beating message without any subtlety, yet it still manages to tell an interesting story with even more interesting characters, however they are never fleshed out enough for us to fully care and understand them. An intricate set up starts our film, a mobster knows about a high stake poker game run and played by members of the mob, and hires two men to rob the game. He knows someone within the mob who can easily be set up for the heist. After the game is robbed, the mob brings in enforcer type Jackie Cogan (Brad Pitt) to find and kill the guys who pulled off the heist. Now Killing Them Softly has a lot more going for it and it is apparent from the opening sequence, where an image of a man walking over derelict and broken down streets intersected with Obama speech cues promising for a new and better day. It’s apparent what Andrew Dominik (Chopper; Assassination of Jesse James…) is trying to get across, you see what he sees, you understand what he is trying to tell, yet he feels like he needs the idea to keep on running throughout the film, which often hurts it’s...

Pets Should Be Treated Like Family Members.

...I know people that consider their pets a part of their families. I strongly agree with that stance towards the animals we have in our homes. For me, treating a pet like a family member is a good lesson in responsibility. In addition, this attitude makes the animals we possess feel happier, and guarantees their being satisfied with our care. We should treat pets like members of our families, because the animals that we take care of give us lessons in responsibility. One knows (YOU KNOW) that there is somebody but himself (APART FROM YOURSELF) to look after. Thus we learn how to look after our future families. In addition, pets teach us qualities like patience and understanding. People should consider his pet (THEIR PETS AS) a family member, as the animal they possess (OWN) will feel happier this way. Pets like cats and dogs are aware of the attitude their master has towards them. They feel better when they are paid more attention. Plus, (IN ADDITION) when you think of your cat as of some (ONE) of your relatives you will never dare to torture it. Pets should be granted (PAID THE ATTENTION) with the attention that we bestow to our families, and thus their health will be benefited (BENEFIT). One (YOU) will never dare to leave his (YOUR) dog hungry if he accepts it as a part of the home. Many people ignore the animals they have at home. However, pets need care, nutrition, and attention. I think that it is not right to buy a living being that will depend on you, and make it...

San Diego Wild Animal Park

...Aside from the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Wild Animal Park is the best place in San Diego to see animals. Over the spread of 1,800 acres, the animal park gives animals the room they need to roam and play. The animals here play just like they do in the wild, which almost makes you feel as if you are in their native of Africa and Asia. Throughout the 30 year history of the animal park, the Noah's Ark symbol of endangered species has grown to dozens upon dozens of animals. Now, every Arabian Oryx found in the wild is the descendant stock from the San Diego Wild Animal Park. In the park, there are many different paths you can take to visit the smaller animal exhibits. Although the smaller animals are a sight to see, the main thing to see is the hour long trip on the Bush Line Railway. Along the railway, you'll see animals that you'd never get the chance of seeing anywhere else, such as the white rhino and the rhinoceros. If you plan to visit the park in the summer, it's always a good idea to visit early. On a normal summer day, ten - fifteen thousand people will visit the park. During the winter, the ratio is down as normally 2,000 people will visit. Although it's much colder in the winter, the park is less frequent with people looking to see the animals the park offers. You can find the animal park 32 miles north of Escondido in San Diego. The park is in a peaceful area, which makes things a lot better for the animals that live...

Jazz

...In my life generally music plays very significant role - makes it colorful. I have always enjoyed listening to sounds which calm me down and maintain positive emotions. Although jazz music has never been my biggest interest, after I started learning about it in class I began to wonder about phenomena of Jazz. Surprisingly I found out it made me bobbin my head and feel warm inside. The performance I attended was at B.B King Blues Club and Grill located on near Times Square. This neighborhood means you will be battling with pretty big crowd but the place was generally pleasant and accommodating. The band played in a style of Ornette Coleman, known as one of the major innovators of the free jazz movement of the 1960’s. The band consisted four saxophones (2 altos, 1 tenor, 1 baritone) two trombones, three trumpets and instruments for setting rhythm. It was beautiful to see it life, all together, performing so professionally. The pieces were easy to listen to which was unexpected to me. The two songs that caught my attention were “Lonely woman” from 1959 and “Dancing in your head” from 1988. In the song “Lonely woman” I noticed many improvisations and solos. The beginning of the song reminded me of Brass Band’s funeral march from New Olean’s style. On the other hand, in the song “Dancing in your head” I noticed that instruments were not playing together, but they were improvising. I believe this style might be called ‘cool jazz’, which we were introduce to on our last class...

Animal Testing

...Some people claim that everyday thousands of people are saved from painful diseases and death by powerful medical drugs and treatments . This incredible gift of medicine would not be possible without animal testing . Despite these overwhelming benefits , however , some individuals are calling for animal testing to be banned because of alleged cruelty. Those who are against the use of animal testing argue that it is inhumane to use animals in save human’s existence. However I completely disagree with such approach. It would be much more inhumane to test new drugs or some other medical elements on children or adults because all people are like big family and therefore people should not put their lives under risk. The second reason why I am in favour of animal testing is that the result of medical experiments are not often applicable to humans .this maybe partly true as some drugs have had to be withdrawn despite being tested on men , therefore as we simply do not have alternative methods of testing , because computer models are not so advanced enough and testing on plants is much less applicable to humans than test on animals such as monkeys . Unless we have a better system we have to use animal testing to provide human’s safety when scientist using drugs A further point often raised against animal testing is that it is cruel . some of the test certainly seem painful , but the great majority of people on this planet eat meat or wear...

...Persuasive Speech Outline Your Name: David Anthony Jones Moraes COMS 101 Section B05 Date Due: July 5th, 2013 Organization: Problem-Solution. Audience analysis: Christian ESL private school teachers in Brazil. Topic: I intend to address the problem of corruption in Brazil, paying special attention to its effect on education. Rhetorical Purpose: To inform my audience about corruption in Brazil, and to persuade them that the church in Brazil should pray for their country in response to this information. Redemptive Purpose: This social problem prevents people from experiencing life as God intended it to be because “God values government as an executor of His righteousness” (Alban, 2012., p. 75) and there is no righteousness in corruption. My proposed solution qualifies as redemptive according to the Alban text because it promotes the fact that “God values the church as an equipper of believers for doing God's redemptive work in the world” (Alban, 2012., p. 75). I. Attention-getter Quote by Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” II. Animal Testing

...Why animal testing is good Intro: Have you ever heard of animal testing? Most people have and while it may seem like an unnecessary evil, I’m going to persuade you on why animal testing is good. Animal testing has contributed to many life-saving cures and treatments, there is no alternative, it’s highly regulated and relatively few animals are used. 1. Animal testing has contributed to many life-saving cures and treatments * Every medical breakthrough in the past century has been the result of animal testing * The life-saving insulin was discovered with dog testing * Polio vaccine, tested on animals lowered the occurrence from 350k in 1988 to 223 in 2012. * Other breakthroughs would be: cancers, MS, tuberculosis, and leukemia –instrumental in pacemaker development. * Chris Abee, Director of the University of Texas’ Cancer research center stated “"we wouldn't have a vaccine for hepatitis B without chimpanzees" (why do scientists) 2. There is no alternative * Humans are complex * Petri dishes, while valuable, aren’t enough for finding and making medical breakthroughs * Studying side effects needs a circulatory system and researching blindness and high blood pressure can’t be done just using tissue samples * Even powerful supercomputers can accurate simulate the complex workings of body systems (animal testing) 3. It is highly regulated * Scientists and researches can’t do whatever they want, there are limits * Regulated...

He had Squealer, who was essentially his second in command, do all the work for him. In the occasions that he didn’t get what he wanted, he would become aggressive and have the dogs, whom he had taken and trained...

Redlands Wind Ensemble

...The University of Redlands Wind Ensemble, directed by Eddie R. Smith, put on a show at the Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, November 16th. Walking into the monumental Chapel I was unsure of what to expect. As I walked in I saw the amazing artwork around, the high ceilings, and a wide variety of instruments scattered on different levels of the stage. On the first level there were many small hand held instruments such as flutes and clarinets, on the second there were a wide variety of brass instruments, and finally in the last row were the percussion instruments. Knowing that it was a wind ensemble and not a traditional orchestra like the ones we have been made familiar with during this course, I was unsure of what to expect. I thought that it would be long and drawn out but I thought that I would not hate it and be able to at least respect the quality of music even if its not exactly my favorite genre. Much to my surprise, it was relatively short (only about 45 minutes) and was relatively interesting. I found myself tapping my foot to the music and enjoying the sounds very much. I was very impressed by the talent that these young men and women had, especially after hearing that they had prepared for this show in only three weeks. The first song that was played was Henry Fillmore’s “The Crosley March”. Right when I had walked in the show started and I could immediately tell the song being played was the first of the night. The song had a very festive feel to it and was short...
