Eric Whitacre Eric Whitacre is a current American composer who, despite his youth, has experienced much success. The Los Angeles Times describes his works as having “Electric, chilling harmonies; works of unearthly beauty, and imagination.”(Hyperion) Whitacre is the founder of Virtual Choir and has composed for many different performance groups such as the London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, The Tallis Scholars, The King Singers and the Minnesota Orchestra. Virtual Choir began as a social experiment in 2009. The idea was sparked when a group of fans of Whitacre filmed a video of themselves singing one of his pieces known as “Sleep.” Whitacre was touched and sent a message to his fans, asking them to film a video of themselves singing. The turnout was a success and resulted in the formation of Virtual Choir. The concept of Virtual Choir is that anyone around the world can film a video of themselves singing, then every video is synchronized and combined into one single performance. (Eric Whitacre)(Hyperion) The Virtual Choir is so popular around the world that more and more people are joining every year. Virtual Choir performed at Technology Education Design lectures in 2013 (TED). Whitacre conducted the Virtual Choir live over a live video feed known as SKYPE as well as a 100 person choir on stage. Virtual choir began with 185 singers and has grown to a total of 8,409 singers representing 101 different countries. Videos of Virtual Choir have been viewed at events all around the globe. Some of these events include the 2011 Olympics in London, the 100th Anniversary Service remembering those lost in the Titanic sinking, the 100th Anniversary service remembering those lost in the Titanic sinking, and the Davos World Economic Forum of 2013. Virtual Choir has been performed at other venues such as additional TED conferences, the Paley Center in New York, the Google event at Kennedy Center in Washington DC, UNICEF and the United Nations. Whitacre soon joined with Disney to compose “Glow.” This composition was written for the World of Color- Winter Dreams. 1,473 American singers submitted recordings representing each of the 50 states.
