Erikson’s Psychosocial Stages
Past Self
1. Think of an important event in your childhood. What does this event tell you about yourself in terms of Erikson’s stages? My important event in my childhood is when I won my drums recital at age 7 because I won the competition against 30 other drummers. I think that is the most important event in my childhood because I was able to accomplish something at a very young age and it just brings me joy and all my competitors looked up and idolized me that time. What this event tells me about myself is that you can make everything happen you just have to make that effort to do it

2. Circle what you believe was your resolution at each of the psychosocial stages below and then give a reason for your choice: AGE | STAGE | WHY? | 0 - 1 | Trust vs. Mistrust Trust | I choose trust because if you’re an infant your still finding someone to trust such as your mother | 1 - 3 | Self-reliance vs. Self-doubt Self-reliance | I choose self-reliance because, self reliance is the same thing as having confidence in everything will make you achieve everything | 3 - 6 | Initiative vs. Guilt Initiative | I choose initiative because I like to face challenges and I like making the right choices against the bad one | 6 - 12 | Industry vs. Inferiority Industry | I choose industry because I survive everything life throws at me and there is nothing to be afraid of if you are always doing right thing | Adolescence | Identity vs. Role Confusion Identity | I choose Identity because I will make my own mark for people to know who I am and because if you know who you are you can set a goal | Young Adulthood | Intimacy vs. Isolation Intimacy | I choose intimacy because no man is an island you got to have someone in order to be motivated. | Middle Adulthood | Generativity

Erickson's Stages

...characters so it is easier to relate to. Trust Versus Mistrust The first stage of Erickson’s theory is trust versus mistrust. This stage is from birth to one year old and is based on the baby’s environment and the baby’s primary care giver. During this period, the baby builds a feeling of basic trust. If the baby’s primary care giver is consistent, predictable, and reliable, then, most likely the baby will carry this trust into other relationships, hoping for the best, developing a sense of trust in the world around them. On the other hand, if the baby is subject to the opposite, in a relationship with the primary caregiver that has been unkind, fickle, and unreliable then the child will develop a sense of mistrust. This will lead the baby down a horrible path and will not have confidence in the world around them or in their abilities to influence events resulting in a sense of mistrust into other relationships. This can result in anxiety, heightened insecurities, and have serious doubts in the world around them. A good example of this stage is Bam Bam Rubble, and Pebbles Flintstones from the popular television program, The Flintstones. This program ran on public television from 1960 to 1966 and consisted of two main families, the Flintstones with Fred, Wilma, and Pebbles; and the Rubbles with Barney, Betty, and Bam Bam. The behavior of Bam Bam and Pebbles is a good example of Erickson’s first stage in trust versus mistrust. After watching a few of the episodes, it is clear...

This stage happen in our adult age, me being 22 I'm just starting this stage and its where life seems to be heading for me right as of now. In this stage we share ourselves more intimately with others and explore relationships that lead into more long term relationships with other people who are not a family members. Which leads to the central question that is asked during this stage of life, "Will I be loved or Will I be alone?" I feel that My boyfriend, Toby and I have shown each other that we both love each other and are in it for the long run. We've been dating for 6 years and are both about to graduate college. In my opinion, this is the time to start getting more serious in our relationship as in moving in together and starting life together. Making those little steps. In the ways that I think that I have sought out to answer these question is getting conformation through Toby that he is going to move forward in life with me and that he truly love me in that he starts talking about the future with me rather than me bring it up. Now if we are looking at another person I'd pick Toby because I do believe that he is in a different stage then I am right now. The stage is Identify vs. Role Confusion which is a stage where we become more independent and began to look at the future in what career we want and...

Erickson's Stages

...Our personality traits come in opposites. We think of ourselves as optimistic or pessimistic, independent or dependent, emotional or unemotional, adventurous or cautious, leader or follower, aggressive or passive. Many of these are inborn temperament traits, but other characteristics, such as feeling either competent or inferior, appear to be learned, based on the challenges and support we receive in growing up. The man who did a great deal to explore this concept is Erik Erikson. Although he was influenced by Freud, he believed that the ego exists from birth and that behavior is not totally defensive. Based in part on his study of Sioux Indians on a reservation, Erikson became aware of the massive influence of culture on behavior and placed more emphasis on the external world, such as depression and wars. He felt the course of development is determined by the interaction of the body (genetic biological programming), mind (psychological), and cultural (ethos) influences. His developmental stages were based on his philosophy that: (1) the world gets bigger as we go along and (2) failure is cumulative. He organized life into eight stages that extend from birth to death (many developmental theories only cover childhood). Then, since adulthood covers a span of many years, Erikson divided the stages of adulthood into the experiences of young adults, middle aged adults and older adults. While the actual ages may vary considerably from one stage to another, the ages seem to be appropriate...

Erickson's Stages of Psychological Development

...3 Generations Project JD Henderson 1030-1Y7 Introduction: For this assignment, I interviewed three individuals of different ages, asking them five of the same questions in an attempt to classify them within Erickson’s Stages of Psychological Development. My first subject, Miss Delightful, was a lively six year old girl that loved to talk. I went to her house where we had met at several different grown-up functions prior to the interview, and there we proceeded to talk for 45 minutes. My second subject was my thirty-two year old buddy, Big Red. We met three years ago on the Ocoee River when I moved back to town. I interviewed him at my house for about ten minutes. My third subject was my seventy-nine year old Grandmother: sweet, always perfect hair, and willing to give you good words of encouragement and advice Grandmother. At my grandparents’ home we had coffee and cake while I spent a half hour listening to sound words of wisdom. Interview #1 “Miss. Delightful, where do you see yourself in 10 years?” Her response, “I see myself being able to say all my ABC’s and being able to play a whole song on the piano.” Then I asked, “So what is a good age to get married?” She replied, “At the age of 10.” Next I asked, “Who is your hero/who do you look up to the most?” With her mom ten feet away, she stated, “DADDY.” Then I proceeded to ask, “How are boys and girls different?” She replied, “Because their birthdays are different, they get different stuff.” Then I asked...

Analyzing Erik Erickson's Eight Stages Of Development

...Erik Erikson's eight stages of development is his theory on how human development happens in psychosocial stages. Erik Erikson's first stage is trust versus mistrust. According to Erikson, this stage occurs from birth to age one and is the foundation for whether or not a person will see the world as a nice and pleasant place to live. Since infants rely entirely on caregivers to survive, their caregivers will shape their sense of trust in the world. This is an interesting theory coming from a man named Erik Erikson. When your last name is Erikson and then your parents name you Erik, I can't imagine this giving you much trust in the world to be a nice place to live. Also, it shows that your parents clearly aren't that clever. In the first stage in a person's development, the closest bond formed is normally with the maternal caregiver. In my case, my mother was incredibly nurturing before I turned one and after. My father and all others in my life at that time were also caring and had my best interests in mind. With this being the case, I would have to say that I resolved the crisis and I find myself to be a very trusting person. However being so trusting comes with major drawbacks that cause all sorts of new problems. "You're far too trusting princess."(Governor Tarkin, Star Wars) A quote my husband tells me far too often. The love and care my husband received from his parents from birth to one was probably equivalent to my own. The only difference I can see is that I am the oldest...

Comparing Piaget And Erickson's Theories Of Childhood Development

...No two schools in the Modesto City School district are the same. They have been built at different times and in different areas of the community. Each school has a mix of teachers, principals, and staff with varying beliefs and pedagogical styles. These groups collectively work to fit the United States educational model; a model which often swings back and forth between the latest in best practices and curriculum standards. The students, not to be forgotten, are also bodies of change. In the same way best practices and curriculum standards are implemented differently at each school site, the students also differ. What does remain consistent are the theories of child development that originated from theorists Erik Erickson and Jean Piaget. Referring to Erikson and Piaget, Carol Garhart Mooney (2000; 2013), an original founder of the Head Start Program, says that “foundational theorists gave us such direction in understanding the developmental needs of young children that they are not diminished or discredited by changes in society or knowledge that force us to make adaptations to their original work” (p. 25). Since society evolves daily, having grounded theories of child development gives educators a consistent measure to best understand a student’s ability to learn. As researchers studying whether students living in historically low socioeconomic areas are obtaining the same level of education as those in a comparison area, it is important for us to use the work of theorists...

Teen Pregency

...Blame? Is Author University Abstract This paper is going to explore of our country’s largest, uncontrolled, expanding epidemic that we face today and that is teen age pregnancy. While this paper is going to explore the statistics of teen age pregnancy it is also going to explore why this epidemic has a possible psychological trigger. Dr. Erik Erickson discusses in his theory if “identity crisis” that an individual must go through eight stages in life successful in order to understand their true identity. While all of the eight stages are important only five will be discussed for this paper. While many of us may believe that there is no reason for a teenager to get pregnant because they should just know better, Dr. Erickson’s theory gives a deep perspective into the psychological effects that can affect a child at different stages of life. This paper is also going to explore what other sources maybe responsible for the teenage pregnancy crisis being so far out of hand. Teen Pregnancy and Who Is To Blame? Statistics show that every year over 750,000 teenage girls will get pregnant. (Services, 2005) More than 2/3 of the teenage girls that get pregnant will not graduate for high school and unmarried pregnant teens account for 24% of the unwed mothers in our country today (Services, 2005) While I don’t think many of us will argue that with statistics like this...

Also, “when too much saturated fat is consumed, some of it is converted to cholesterol, which accumulates as plaque on the arterial walls in atherosclerosis” (Berk, 2010, p. 441). Q was stressing about getting into college, helping his mother with bills, and finding a job. This is psychological development, “chronic stress resulting from economic hardships is linked to hypertension, which contributes to the high incidence of heart disease in low-income groups, especially African-Americans” (Berk, 2010, p. 450). The character Calvin in Ordinary People is the father, who is married to Beth and have a son name Conrad. Calvin and Beth lose their eldest son Buck to a boating accident a year ago, which leads to a suicide attempt of their other son. The characters in this novel and movie show many signs of Erickson’s theory of development especially Calvin. Calvin falls into two stages of Erickson’s theory of development: Ego Integrity vs. Despair, and Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt. The theory of Ego Integrity vs. Despair states as people become older in life people they often spend time reflecting on their life and feel despair and become depressed because they may not have accomplished goals they set in life. This theory can be seen throughout the novel and movie as Calvin becomes more and more aware of what kind of relationship his wife and son, have after the death of Buck. He soon becomes despair with his marriage and realizes what kind of person his wife Beth is, and understands why his mentor did not approve of their marriage. Psy 230 Week 3 Day 5- Ericksons Time Line

...week 3 day 5 Erikson’s Timeline 10/13/2013 Initially I thought that defining where I fit in Erickson’s stage of development would be easy. The truth I have found is far from that. Although the stages are defined by a general age each development stage has, I personally feel that I fit into two stages. The initial stage I feel I blend well with is the sixth stage called young adult stage. The age for this is labeled as 18 to 35 The question posed during this sixth stage is intimacy versus isolation (Erikson, 1980). Although I am 37, I am in the decision of completing a committed relationship. I am newly in a relationship by one year. With this the situation and the other person being slightly younger than I am, the discussion has been brought across the table for our future and family planning. Although I have children, he does not and would want to have. This is the beginning of our family and with more planning in time I will get to know just how big our family will grow to be. At this point I feel that I am in the right relationship and that my outlook on a relationship has definitely changed, more on a morale aspect. I know it could be easily said that being in the relationship influences the way one thinks about the relationship. This relationship is far different from that theory. I was teetering on the seventh stage of Erickson’s stage of development theory. I was not looking for a relationship however just like theory six describes, this is...
