These inter-organizational relationships have proven to create value for both parties involved. However, the management of such relationships requires resources and is a complex task. Recent advances in information technology offer new ways of managing inter-organizational relationships. The impact of those intra-organizational and inter-organizational information systems for creating value in business-to-business relationships has not been explored so far. In this paper, a conceptual model about the impact of information system deployment on value-creating functions of inter-organizational buyer-seller relationships is developed. Based on an empirical study with 60 German firms engaged in customer-supplier relationships this paper also gives some empirical evidence for the developed framework. Introduction Touted as the “most significant category innovation since toilet paper first appeared in roll form in 1890,” dispersible (flushable) moist toilet tissue on a roll was introduced in the United States by Kimberly Clark in 2001. According to a corporate press release, Cottonelle Fresh Rollwipes was a breakthrough product that “delivers the cleaning and freshening of pre-moistened wipes with the convenience and disposability of toilet paper.” Internal market research seemed to indicate that there was a clear customer need for a new product to supplement dry toilet paper. Surveys and focus groups revealed that over 60% of adult consumers had experimented with a moist cleaning method (e.g., using baby wipes, wetting a washcloth, sprinkling water on dry toilet paper) and one out of four used a moist cleaning method daily. The purpose of this research was to analyze how a niche strategy can be used by US textile and apparel companies to compete with lower priced imports. With the increasing globalization of the industry, it has been suggested that companies focus on products that offer a competitive advantage over commodity products (Standard and Poor’s, 2003). One way of doing this is to focus on specialized, or niche, products. The conceptual models used in this study provided a framework for specialization within trade. The trade theories examined were 1) Ricardo’s Comparative Advantage Theory (Ricardo, 1817), 2) Heckscher-Ohlin Trade Theory of Factor Proportions (Heckscher & Ohlin, 1991), 3) Posner’s Technology Trade Gap Theory (Posner, 1961), 4) Vernon’s Theory of the Product Life Cycle of Trade (Vernon, 1966), and 5) Porter’s Model of Competitive Advantage (Porter, 1998). Each of these trade theories predicts specialization as a result of trade. This means that as trade barriers decrease, a country’s resources will focus on those processes in which it has a competitive advantage. Based on our suggested framework, we explain how appropriate customer-centric HRM practices can support more cost-effective and accommodating adaptations in the organization’s governance of its relationships with customers. We complement these propositions with practical examples illustrating how customers who take different cooperative roles will increasingly become valuable organizational assets.
