When an event occurs in our lives, whether it be good or bad, we must each ask ourselves, "What role did I play in this?" (Benson 27 February 2017). This question helps us to find the beginning of the path we currently path which are currently set upon by looking back on outcomes or a consequence determined by the decisions we have made. It is only in the long run are we able to ask this simple question as we gain an understanding of where we were, and where we are currently. "Leadership in Crisis: Ernest Shackleton and the Epic Voyage of the Endurance," a case published by The Harvard Business School, provides an opportunity to observe the role Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, an Irish explorer in the Royal Geographic Society, played that led …show more content…
Shackleton anchor in each person that the transcontinental journey is the very last big thing to be done in the South. He tells us that this is a not only a big accomplishment, but also the last accomplishment. It is well understood what needs to be done, why it is important, and why we are going to do it(BYCV 12). There is a lesson to be learned from Shackleton that sometimes it is not us that crosses the finish line first. We knew going in that the goal was big, hairy and audacious, and it could not be those things without an opportunity for failure. No matter the outcome it is critical to provide both the path and the momentum to drive and initiate forward movement (BYCV 13).

Returning to the article “Building Your Company’s Vision”, Collins and Porras framework for vision, also defines the core ideologies that establish and sustain a vision (BYCV 1). The core ideologies are comprised of two sub parts which are Core Values:the handful of guiding principles by which a company navigates, and the Core Purpose, an organization's most fundamental reason for being (BYCV 1). The article Building Your Company’s Vision provides us with two exercises to help us understand what is important: “Random Corporate Serial Killer”, and the “5 whys” (BYCV 7). The goal of each of these is to provide a thoughtful and introspective approach to discovering your organization's core ideologies. The article goes to great lengths to ensure the reader understands that core ideologies are not something you create through fiat, but instead through discovery (BYCV 11). Collins and Porras then remind us that while core ideologies are discovered, the envisioned future is a create process. The leader of the expedition, Sir Ernest Shackleton, had planned to sail his boat to the coast through the Weddell Sea, which bounded Antarctica to the north, and then march a crew of six men, supported by dogs and sledges, to the Ross Sea on the opposite side of the continent (see Exhibit 1).1 Deep in the southern hemisphere, it was early in the summer, and the Endurance was within sight of land, so Shackleton still had reason to anticipate reaching shore. The ice, however, was unusually thick for the ship’s latitude, and an unexpected southern wind froze it solid around the ship. Within hours the Endurance was completely beset, a wooden island in a sea of ice. More than eight months later, the ice still held the vessel.
