...where the winners took home $5 million dollars. The players of this sport all did this without leaving their seat. I’m referring to electronic sports, or esports. I’m not just talking about playing a golf, basketball, or tennis game on the Wii. What I do mean is that there are video games out there that take all the main components of traditional sports: communication, training, and teamwork, and make them into their video game. People are playing sports without ever leaving their seat. Ladies and gentlemen, Welcome once again to Digital Sports! (Stanley Parable announcer saying this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRloyLtJ6r0) Let’s talk about the three things you will need to be able to play digital sports effectively: communication, training, and teamwork. Communication in esports is one of the most crucial skill areas. Think about all the things you rely on when playing a traditional sport--body language, hand signals, eye contact, speaking to each other. All of these thing are pretty much removed from esports. Now, it is a little different if you play professionally and you are communicating in one room--but if you are playing with friends online and they don’t have microphones, you’re out of luck. Because of this, communication is the most valued and highly underused skills a esport player can have. My favorite esport is called Defense of the Ancients 2 or DOTA 2 . In this game, you can make markings on the minimap with your mouse to signal to go here,...

...up identical feelings within me? An then I realize maybe, just maybe, the two activities were not so distant after all. Classic sports revolved around vigorous training, unimaginable athleticism, and a colossal amount of competition. How can a masterpiece that reflects an athlete’s dedication be mortified by some nerds sitting in front of an apparatus? The truth is, eSports evolved at an exponential rate in the last decade to the point where the largest eSports title, League of Legends, obtained a player base in which “67 million people played League every month” in 2014 (Dot Esports). Although tiny compared to the monstrous “265 million players actively involved in soccer around the world” (Huffington Post), this is massive for a game that has been around for only seven years business wise. Alongside the massive player base is a gargantuan prize pool, with the Defense of The Ancients 2 tournament, The International 7, achieving “a prize pool worth 24 million” (Seattle Times). Amidst an adapting industry, the question arises; just how similar are eSports when compared to universal sports, and should these eSports be seen as an athletic...

...The Effect of eSports Growth on the Development of Gaming Gear and Innovations in the Distribution Model Background and History As technology has advanced in recent years, forms of entertainment have shifted from the activities of the outdoor to the games played indoors. Specifically, the emergence of computer gaming as a spectator sport has influenced many firms to develop products that satisfy the unique need of professional and recreational gamers alike. Much like the development of popular sports, such as basketball or soccer, the growth of eSports has created an industry that produces supplementary products required to enjoy the sport. However, instead of basketball and soccer shoes and clothing, the industry if focused on creating high-tech “gaming gear”. These products include higher function keyboards and mice, glasses to protect from glare, and headsets and microphones for gaming oriented communication. As more and more individuals become consumers of this market, the competition in gaming has increased, and the need for better and more sophisticated “gaming gear” equipment has evolved. Initially, with the introduction of computer gaming systems, the basic mouse and keyboard were essential components of most computer games. One of the first innovations in computer gaming history is the introduction of the Apple II and Commodore 64 in the late 1970’s. These were two basic gaming consoles based on the QWERTY keyboards. Both of these products had higher performance...

...Why Performance Enhancing Drugs Should Not Be Allowed In Electronic Sports Imagine young adults having high blood pressure or even heart attacks just because they used Adderall to enhance their performance in Electronic Sports (or eSports) competitions. I believe that Performance Enhancing Drugs, or PEDs, have no place in eSports. One of the two main groups of people involved in this issue is the Electronic Sports League (or ESL). The ESL is the company that organizes and oversees eSports teams and competitions, much like the NFL oversees football, and they are against the use of PEDs. Also involved in this issue, are the dopers who use drugs like Adderall, originally a medication for ADHD, to enhance their focus and reflexes in competitions. I believe that PEDs should be forbidden in eSports competitions because they give dopers an unfair advantage, leading to winning prize money they did not actually earn themselves. More importantly, PEDs have dangerous side effects that can be serious. My first reason for supporting the ESL’s Performance Enhancing Drug (or PED) policy is that it prevents players from having an unfair advantage. Evidence that supports my claim is “Esports athletes”...”want to increase reflexes and improve concentration; so, they experiment with behavior modification drugs, like Ritalin and Adderall.”...

...Esports bring in a large amount of money to the United States such as other sports like baseball, football or soccer. Some gamers from the Esports industry have even turned the system into a profession such as bringing in millions to view their favorite games at a professional level. But what has been questioned within the Esports franchise is should it be considered a hobby, profession or even a real sport. Since gaming has come up in 1958 it has taken a straight turn towards the profession side of life. A YouTuber named Felix Kjellberg also known as Pewdiepie makes from in between seven to eight million dollars’ year making videos with a total of nine billion views from his carrier of YouTube. ...Introduction When we think of the term sports, the first things that come to our mind are Football or Basketball, which happen to be the most common televised sports, but we rarely give thought about what these sports have in common. In a sport, players assemble to participate in a competitive game against each other, demonstrating their skill and understanding of the game. Players dedicate lots of time into practicing and honing their skills, in hopes of outmaneuvering the opponents and earning the victory. Just like in normal sports, E-Sports is when players gather to compete invideo games. This may sound a bit ridiculous, but I assure you that there are many video games out in today's market which require a lot of skills to play competitively. Take a shooter game, like Call of Duty or Counter-Strike, for example, where it is critical for players to have the ability to aim at their target quickly, precisely and accurately, in order to stay alive and defeat the opponents. To gain these skills, the the teams needs get together often and practice game after game after game to coordinate their teamwork and skills. There are a number of leagues (more and more are popping out as the E-Sports community to grow) which host these games. One of the biggest league in America at the moment is the Major League Gaming(MLG), which happens every 1 to 2 months, and hosts a variety of games. Players and viewers gather from all over the world to attend these events. Other examples include...

...Critical Issue Paper eSports in the Olympics Christian Miller 10/21/12 Pd. 3 Economics What comes to mind when you think of the Olympic Games? Physical contact? Medals? Glorious Victory? Since the Greeks performed the first olympiad in 776 B.C. the games have stood as a test for the worlds greatest athletes to compete against each other and bring glory in the form of a medal to their home country. But what exactly can we limit the term “sport” to? Must it require running or swimming or throwing something? Technically, a sport can be defined as any activity performed using specific skills or tactics competetively. Now, what exactly are eSports? eSports stands for Electronic Sports and is a term labeling the competetive gameplay of video games, generally online multiplayer games. The first known organization of competetive gameplay occurred in 1980 at a tournament for the Atari game Space Invaders, hosted by Atari themselves. Since then, many games have been used in online and local tournaments, often rewarding the victor with a monetary prize. Games that are often played today include Starcraft II, FIFA World Cup Soccer, and Call of Duty. Since the internet has begun making leaps and bounds in speed and performance and availability, the games and tournaments themselves have grown larger and more popular. This has resulted in a high number of people requesting the ultimate goal for devoted gamers: to bring sanctioned eSports to the Olympic Games. Numerous organizations...

...even go up to $500,000 for the team that wins the tournament. A second reason why gaming should be considered a sport is because of the salaries the professional players earn. Some players get pay huge salaries around $100,000 including getting sponsored by huge companies like redbull and monster. Another reason would be training. These players must endure grueling training regimens Most players try to be the best, so they practice everyday and make it a fulltime job. Some of these players stream their gameplay on a website called Twitch, in which they can earn money from donations of their viewers. Throughout its history professional gaming has started to gain more recognition as the years have passed. eSports tournaments have been recognized as a professional sport. eSports have made deals with channels and have their own websites where they stream their gameplay to show to the public. The dedication some of the professional players put in professional gaming is incredible. When big tournaments happen that involve huge prizes, a lot of teams compete with each other to see who can compete in these big tournaments. When tournaments are held in other countries the professional players have to pay for their own travel expenses in order to compete in these big tournaments. They are willing to risk of their money to get a chance to compete and win the tournaments to make a profit. Now players are able to travel to other countries under a specific visa that lets them play in the tournaments...

...Randolph S. Diggs III The Heart of a Champion Electronic Sports, simply abbreviated as eSports, can be explained as a sport that is just in electronic from. When we think of Sports, we think of activities involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others. Although eSports may not offer the same type of physical exhaustion that real life sports provide. The mental aspect of eSports is just as competitive, if not more so. At first thought, one will assume that the common reason to play Video Games, is to simply have fun, to get away, without truly getting away. Both true to a degree of extent. Say for instance you play basketball, you play for fun with your friends; after a while you realize not only are you having fun, you’re developing skill. With skill comes competition, and with competition comes self improvement. So, how do you improve upon one’s self, the answer is simple, you compete against others who too, wish to better themselves. You know the saying, you are only as good as your competition. That is true with any sport, or anything you do. One cannot compete at the highest level unless he/she has competed against the best. Casual competition alone will not make you a great player, a good one, sure. This is the part where the parents begin to question, they are upset because the Champion is spending most of his daylight indoors. The reason for this, is that the Champion, wishes to reach a new...

...Suyash KC MAVS 1000 Student Organization Investigation I was not able to attend the student organization fair in person. But what I did was, gather information from the student organization website. What I found were three organizations that suited me perfectly. The three organizations I wanted to investigate were the, “Men’s Soccer - Sports Club,” “R.O.V.E.R. Society,”and the “eSports.” My first investigation was on the Soccer club. Their purpose is to play and enjoy soccer. But they compete in a way that unites all the players. The club’s meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8pm to 10pm. Their practices are at the intramural fields. This club aligns with my interests because I have a love for soccer. It is a sport that I’ve grown up with. A sport that has been in my life, and has brought all sorts of emotions. What I hope to happen by joining the soccer club is, gaining new friends. I would be able to make new friends who also share the same interest as me....

Course: Engl135---Academic Writing Professor: Laura Fanning Due Date: Friday, October 31st Research Paper Outline: Valve’s Successful E-sports Marketing strategies For Dota 2 Thesis: Valve is successful in promoting its video game Dota 2 by using e-sports as an important part of its marketing strategies. Its strategies include hosting the tournament, cooperating with different broadcasting platforms and packaging e-sports players. I. The first key component of the Valve’s e-sports marketing strategies is hosting an annual Dota 2 international tournament in the last four years. A. This game tournament provided good infrastructure for the audience and e-sports players. 1. It changed the tournaments in the earlier years, which were matches in small size. The big prize pool attracted professional players and teams from worldwide. 2. The Dota 2 tournament mirrored the success of major traditional sports. B. Valve spent a lot of money on the first two tournaments. The annual prize pool, $1.5 million, was provided by itself. However, the prize pool from the third tournament was funded by Dota 2 customers and e-sports fans. 1. The cost of the first and second tournament created and developed strong customer groups. The excellent performance made them willing to pay for the next tournament. 2. Valve drew money by selling the Compendium in the third year, a digital book which contains in-game items that unlock as the pool increases...

I often start doing these blogs 1-2 days before the blogs are due, in order to give myself to think and reflect on what I should do. So far my planning for these blogs have been watching VODs of the games or livestreams of the event, and taking notes on a notebook. I use these notes and start to think about how i’m going to organize my blog and what structure it should have. I used some resources but I think I can use them more effectively. I used classmates, such as Alejandro and Nick to generate new ideas. Since Tommy from our class also plays League of Legends and follows esports, I can sometimes ask for his opinion to see what he thinks. From a feedback suggestion by you, to get someone to read my blog before posting it to fix the flow of the paper, I’m starting to to...

...think of sports? Fast paced activities involving lots of rigorous physical exertion, and very well practiced physical skills. I think that we sometimes look past other competitive activities solely because they do not involve physical activity. This is where e-sports come into play, and it may be hard to adapt to at first, because only the younger generation people will understand all of the new technology and games better than most older generation people. StarCraft 2, Dota 2, and League of Legends are all online competitive PC games, where millions of players online from around the world fight and compete with each other. Rob Pardo, the creator of World of Warcraft made a good argument as to why eSports should be in the Olympics, and he said “I think the way that you look at eSports is that its’ a very competitive skillset and you look at these professional gamers and the reflexes are lightning quick and they’re having to make very quick decisions on the fly”(Rob Pardo sporttechie.com). I like his argument because...
