TITLE In our society heinous crimes are committed by all sorts of age groups. From the ages of 13-18 you are considered to be a teenager. The crimes committed like murder rape grand theft auto, molestation. Should age play a role if they were premeditated? If the teenagers today feel they are adult enough to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, do drugs drive bys, run the streets and do gang related felonies like adults then they should be tied as adults depending on the seriousness and motive of the crimes. The environment out brain develops in has a lot to do with our personal morals and how we handle situations. Our brain is constantly growing and absorbing information. “The brain is like a puzzle.” (Thompson 1) A puzzle we still don’t have the pieces to. We still don’t know much about the human brain and its logic. Some of what is known is that what teens do during there adolescent years will affect how their brain develops. Studies show that there is a “massive loss of brain tissue that occurs in the teenage years” (Thompson 1). The areas of the brain were tissue is lost is controlling the impulse, risk taking, and self control. And in frontal lobes contains our violent passion, sudden actions and circling emotions. The studies show the amount of brain tissue lost and the result of the teenagers’ that’s lost it. What’s not said is how much is lost because of stupidity, like drugs. As states in California’s proposition 21 “juveniles 14 years of age or older charged with committing certain types of murder or a serious sex offence are no longer eligible for juvenile court” (prop 21) so under prop 21 if you are 14 or older with murder or specific sex offences then it is required to have and adult trial. When teenagers choose to commit these crimes they aren’t thinking like children therefore why treat them like children. Teens know the difference and severity between crimes. Its common sense to know it’s wrong to affect the well being of others. Being a teenager we all mature at different ages, we know right from wrong, depending on how we were raised. When I refer to maturity I don’t intend to use your age, but the adult like capacities of the decisions to a situation. “Age can shape every aspect of a capital case” (Liptak 1). It’s obvious that age could have a role but how much dose it matter when your 14 and commit a premeditated murder and being 17 and committing the same charge? You could argue that there is a difference in brain development or their maturity levels or even the motive behind the offence! This statement makes it clear that some teens don’t realize the severity of there crime until their fate is in the hands of complete strangers during a fatal trial, or while they are behind four walls. Through my own experience I have noticed a difference between adolescents my own age just by their personal upbringing. The surroundings you grew up in could show in your consistency for committing crimes. Having lived in a lot of rough places the teens I have witnessed don’t show much of ambitions because they’ve been labeled as ignorant children, unable to reach any other standard but the lowest bars of prisons. I’ve been through the judicial system a number of times, and been behind four walls, so I can understand were some of these kids are at mentally when they are incarcerated. You realize in more depth the wronging of your crime. Feeling sorry for what you did should occur. Some of these teens just waltz up in the court room and just act silly! Robert Acuna was a high school kid from Texas facing the death penalty for murdering “execution style” stealing their car. While in the court room the prosecutor had said, “he would laugh at inappropriate things…” That is a great

Chapter 7 Essay

...Chapter 7 Government Intervention in International Business GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION 1. In a short essay, describe two methods of government intervention. What is the purpose of government intervention in international business? Answer Government intervention is often manifested as protectionism. Protectionism refers to national economic policies designed to restrict free trade and protect domestic industries from foreign competition. Protectionism often leads to two types of intervention: tariffs and nontariff barriers. A tariff is a tax imposed by government on imported products, effectively increasing cost of acquisition for the customer. A nontariff trade barrier, such as a quota, is a government policy, regulation, or procedure that impedes trade through means other than explicit tariffs. Governments intervene in trade and investment to achieve political, social, or economic objectives. Barriers are often applied to benefit specific interest groups, such as domestic firms, industries, and labor unions. A key rationale is to create jobs by protecting industries from foreign competition. Governments may also intervene to support home-grown industries or firms. In various ways, government intervention alters the competitive positions of companies and industries, and the status of citizens. ...reading binary. Using a 7-segment display we are able to achieve that by converting the BCD value into a 7 bit output. The 7-segment display has 7 LEDs and a certain amount of voltage triggers each of the 7 segments to produce a decimal number. Procedure 1. Create a truth table for your 4 bit input and the corresponding output necessary to light the proper segments of the display. For example, if the input is represented by WXYZ and the output is identified as ABCDEFG then if the input is 0000, all outer LEDs should be lit while the middle LED should be off. Once you create the rows in a truth table for the other 9 combinations, find the function for each segment. 2. Depending on whether you are dealing with more 0s or 1s, choose NAND or AND gates to implement each segment function. 3. Wire the input DIP switches to the decoder input. Note that you have 2 3x8 decoders. You will need to use the inputs and enable lines to combine them in order to implement these 7 functions. 4. Wire the NAND or AND gates to the proper outputs of the decoders in order to implement the functions for each segment. 5. Wire the outputs of the gates to the proper pin on the 7-segment display (refer to the datasheet for the 7-segment display you are using and remember to use a resistor instead of a jumper. 6. Attach 5V to both common anode pins of your 7-segment display (refer to the datasheet for the 7-segment display you are using). 7. Demonstrate number 0-9...

7 Habits Essay

...7 Habits Essay We all develop habits that can have effects on our personality; people perceive these effects as positive or negative based on their productivity and helpfulness as a skill. In examining our habits closely, we can see areas that need improvement and should be targeted to become more efficient with our limited time on earth. From the way we act around others to the way we procrastinate, our habits define who we are. In the book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey cites seven habits and lessons that one can use to become a more effective and highly regarded person. The first habit Covey describes states that one must always try to be proactive. Covey says that “our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions” (71). Instead of our environment being responsible for our path in life, we can be proactive and accomplish the tasks we want to regardless of the circumstances. Effective leaders and people do not simply accept their surroundings and let their life be decided for them; they will rise up and take charge of their choices, bettering themselves and their lives in the process. Proactive people have a positive mindset and will always affect those around them in an encouraging manner. An example of a proactive person would be my friend, Will. Will always tries his best in everything he does and does not complain, no matter the circumstances he is given. He knows that it is always possible to make the best out of any situation...

GAD-7 Essay

...The GAD-7, designed by Spitzer et al., is a brief scale that measure anxiety. It is consisted of 7-item self-report questionnaires to identify and rate symptoms. Correspondingly from zero to three, the response options were “not at all”, “several days”, “more than half the days”, and “nearly every day”. To test the reliability of the measure the researchers used test-retest. The test-retest reliability came out to be 0.83, which is reliable, because it was greater than 0.70. The construct validity was accurate as well, because there was a strong association that as the score increases the more severe the anxiety level is. In addition, there was a strong convergent validity. The GAD-7 had strong correlations to the Beck Anxiety Inventory, Symptom Checklist-90, and the PHQ-8. A case study by Moon Hye Jin et al., Perceived stress in patients with migraine, used the GAD-7 scale to measure the anxiety level of...

Unit 7 - Essay

...I have been looking at trend and patterns of health and illness of different social groups. Some factors that could affect this are gender, social, geographical location, ethnicity and age. I have used several statistical sources to find out if social class does affect health and illness. The world health organisation states “a state of complete health physical, metal and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Social class is an informal ranicing of people, based on their income, occupation, education, dwelling and other factors. This may be referred to as a socio – conic backgrounds. Morality (death) and morbidity (sickness) vary greatly among different social class. Social class factors that cause inequalities are income, occupation, education and environment. Cultural or behavioural This explanation looked at the behaviour and lifestyle choices of people in the lower social classes. It appeared lower social class smoked more, drank more alcohol, take less exercise and eat more junk food. Poor lifestyle choices were linked to a range of chronic – illnesses, heart disease, cancer, diabetics and bronchitis. Personally I think that the message people have about alcohol, smoking and drugs is that they do it to look cool in front of their friends or that they have been peered pressured into it especially with alcohol. Only 65 per cent of people actually drink alcohol and smoke to be more socially with friends. the people who drink 60 per cent of...

Essay 1

...An essay is a piece of writing which is often written from an author's personal[->0] point of view[->1]. Essays can consist of a number of elements, including: literary criticism[->2], political manifestos[->3], learned arguments[->4], observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author. The definition of an essay is vague, overlapping with those of an article[->5] and a short story[->6]. Almost all modern essays are written in prose[->7], but works in verse[->8] have been dubbed essays (e.g. Alexander Pope[->9]'s An Essay on Criticism[->10] and An Essay on Man[->11]). While brevity usually defines an essay, voluminous works like John Locke[->12]'s An Essay Concerning Human Understanding[->13] and Thomas Malthus[->14]'s An Essay on the Principle of Population[->15] are counterexamples. In some countries (e.g., the United States and Canada), essays have become a major part of formal education[->16]. Secondary students are taught structured essay formats to improve their writing skills, and admission essays[->17] are often used by universities[->18] in selecting applicants and, in the humanities and social sciences, as a way of assessing the performance of students during final exams. The concept of an "essay" has been extended to other mediums beyond writing. A film essay is a movie that often incorporates documentary film making styles and which focuses more on the evolution of a theme or an idea. A photographic essay[->19] is an attempt to cover a topic...

Me Talk Pretty One Day

...Big essay: Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris, 2005 In my essay I will focus on the writer’s tone and on the attitude to learning foreign languages that is explored in the text Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris. Me Talk Pretty One Day is an essay about the narrator’s, David, time in Paris where he means to learn French. He feels quite intimidated by the other foreign students who, in his opinion, speak excellent French. The teacher assigned to the French class he is partaking in, is extremely tough and intimidating. While going through the alphabet, she proceeds to ask the students questions that will only serve as a humiliating experience for the chosen party. David spends many hours every day studying and preparing for the upcoming classes. His private life is heavily affected by the teacher’s harsh treatment in class, driving him to not to speak in public or on the phone. It feels like an uphill battle for David, but after some months David realizes while in class that he understands everything the teacher is saying. He counteracts the teacher’s provocation with his own sly remark, indicating his perfect understanding of her choice of wording. The tone is this essay moves throughout the essay from being sarcastic through uncomfortable to depressed until it ends on a more hopeful note. In the start the tone is quite sarcastic when he, after the mentioning of his age as being forty-one, describes his start in Paris as that of the circumstances in which a much younger...

Why Looks Are the Last Bastion of Discrimination

...Summary of “Why Are Looks the Last Bastion of Discrimination?” Deborah L. Rhode has written several books based on race and gender. She wrote one essay titled “Why Are Looks the Last Bastion of Discrimination”. In this essay Rhode states that workers have been discriminated based on their attractiveness, also individuals seeking employment have also been declined a job or have been given a job based of their looks. In the essay Rhode argues that there should be a law established in the United States that is against looks discrimination. According to Rhode, the United States has made many laws in the past years to protect groups of people that are being discriminated based on sex, religion, race, or disability, yet there is no official law protecting employees that are being discriminated on their looks. Since there is no law that protects a person from this kind of discrimination, it is allowing corporations to discriminate an employment seeker, or a current employee based on his or her appearance. Rhode claims that companies discriminate people on their looks, because attractiveness is “job-related” and they want a person with an attractive appearance to represent their company. Deborah L. Rhode states that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and the fact that a boss has the power to say who is “attractive” or “unattractive” really gives employees a disadvantage in their job. This limits the person to show how good they can turn out to be in a certain job. Rhode insists...
