To be Hispanic is more than just a title it’s a way of identifying ourselves with thousands of other people who share similar aspirations for life. For me being Hispanic means more than just having descendants from a Latin country, being Hispanic is a way of life that at times impacts our attitude and how we view the world. Being Hispanic meant we grew up with similar ideas and goals as all those who share this title. Being Hispanic is something that we shouldn’t be ashamed to admit as it has given us skills that have set us apart from the crowd such as being bilingual or exposing us to experiences that have helped fuel an undying desire to succeed.

I grew up knowing that my parents were willing to risk their lives to come to the United States just so that their children could live a better life. I saw them work endless jobs and come home exhausted only with the hope that they could give us everything that we could ever want, I’ve seen them work so hard and giving their all just so that we could live a better life than they did. seeing all the sacrifices my parents have done for us I’m more than willing to do my best and give everything that I have in order to succeed and make sure that everything that my parents have done doesn’t go to waste. Growing up Hispanic I was exposed to two different cultures that have both helped mold me into who I am. Being Hispanic has never been something bad for me; on the contrary being Hispanic is one of the best things that have ever happened to me. Growing up Hispanic has taught me many things wither it be a second language or strength in family and community or most importantly knowing that anything is possible if we give it our all. While many people believe that growing up Hispanic in America is a disadvantage I chose to believe that it was a

...1) The Spanish title of the essay allowed me to believe that this essay will have some connection with the Spanish language or the Hispanic culture. When we translate the title of the essay it means “I can speak Spanish.”. Therefore, I thought it will be about her frustration and journey of learning a new language, or fitting into the Hispanic culture. Reading the essay further reviled that not knowing Spanish or having the Spanish accent made it easier for her to fit in with the students in her school, but my first thought about the essay was not relevant to any part of the essay. 2) Beginning the essay with this anecdote allows the reader to know this essay could be about someone’s journey and frustration about learning Spanish. ...Espanol” is one of the best essays I have read in my life time because I can relate a lot to it. This essay was written by Tanya Maria Barrientos. This essay will help you see the struggles she had to over come while growing up in The United States and not speaking Spanish her native Language. Mrs Barrientos was born in Guatemala and was raised in El Paso TX. When she was 3 years old her family brought her to The United States. Her parents decided that they were only going to speak English in her household. Her parents had decided that the only way her and her brother could fit-in in the Anglo society was by only speaking English regardless of their Hispanic appearance. She wrote about a time when her parents took her one week late to school because they were on vacation. “At the school's office the registrar frowned when they arrived.” She told them “ you people. Your children are always behind, and you have the nerve to bring them late?” I personally been through that similar situation during my school years while growing up. I love her mothers response when she says “ My children will be at the top of their classes in two weeks.” I bet that took the registrar off track. Since she was young she thought that speaking Spanish meant various things. One of the things was that Spanish meant being poor. Another thing was that it meant waiting tables or cleaning hotel rooms. When she was 16 years old she informed to her father that “she hatted being called Mexican.” Mr Barrientos...

Still Separate, Still Unequal Analysis

...African American and Hispanic children face within todays public education system. In this essay, Kozol shows the reader, with alarming statistics and percentages, just how segregated Americas urban schools have become. He also brings light to the fact that suburban schools, with predominantly white students, are given far better funding and a much higher quality education, than the poverty stricken schools of the urban neighborhoods. Jonathan Kozol brings our attention to the obvious growing trend of racial segregation within America’s urban and inner city schools. He creates logical support by providing frightening statistics to his claims stemming from his research and observations of different school environments. He also provides emotional support by sharing the stories and experiences of the teachers and students, as well as maintaining strong credibility with his informative tone throughout the entire essay. Within this essay, there are many uses of rhetorical appeals including logos, pathos, and ethos. Jonathan Kozol uses reasoning, or logos, to prove that the education systems of today are still as separated and unequal for students based on the color of their skin or their race, as they were 50 years ago. An example of this is when Kozol informs us of the exact percentages of students by race in schools across the country, “In Chicago 87% of public-school enrolment was black or Hispanic; less than 10% was white. In Washington D.C., 94% black or Hispanic; to less than 5%...

The Myth Of The Latin Woman Analysis

...Judith Ortiz Cofer’s “The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria” is about the racist stereotypes that she has encountered in her life. Cofer is known for the publishing of three collections of poetry, four essay collections, four novels, and short story collections. Cofer is currently “Regents’ and Franklin Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Georgia” (230). In this essay Cofer often experiences being stereotyped based off her beauty and ethnic background. Cofer is a beautiful Hispanic woman “who so obviously belongs to Rita Moreno’s gene pool” (231), as she stated in the beginning of the essay. Cofer begins the essay by relating an experience where a drunk man started singing "Maria”, from "Westside Story” (231) to her, while she is on a bus trip to London from Oxford. Cofer tries to keep her cool even though everyone around her finds it entertaining. Cofer states “I managed my version of an English smile: no show of teeth, no extreme contortions of facial muscles. . .” (231). At this moment, Cofer is aggravated by the actions of the drunk man but tries to keep her composure. Cofer feels that just because she is beautiful that does not...

Bilingualism in America

...1.In S.I. Hayakawa’s essay ethos are applied numerously through out. Through out S.I’s essay he refers to his own experience about being an American immigrant along with the interest group he created that gives his credibility. For example, S.I. explained to the audience “several years ago, I helped to establish U.S. English, a Washington D.C.- based public interest group that seeks an amendment to the U.S. constitution declaring English our official language…” (paragraph 3). S.I. also specifies about his own experience of being a Japanese immigrant and knowing the important that learning English is. He mentions “I am keenly aware of the things that blind us as Americans…” (paragraph 4). Also, S.I. states “As a former U.S. senator from California…” (paragraph 17) The usage of his experiences, explaining to the audience the interest group, and referring to his previous senator position gives S.I. his credibility. Ethos are particularly important when writing about this subject because if S.I. didn’t have credibility no one wouldn’t consider his point of view. Having credibility is about the subject connects the audience to the author and gives the reader a sense of understanding. 2. S.I starts his argument by relating back to to World War II when immigrants had trouble interacting with English speakers. He then follows up with his argument about making English the official language and why English should be. Also, tells the problem of why students aren’t learning English...

The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria.

...as everyone else. In this short essay, Cofer describes her personal experiences of being a Latin woman, and the struggles she has had to face with ethnic stereotyping. As we know, appearance plays a huge role in the way that individuals are perceived especially when dealing with different races. In this particular story, an educated Latina woman was often perceived as something she was completely different from. In various instances, the author was underestimated because of her Latin beauty and exotic features. Cofer describes how in one instance a man on the bus reenact “Maria” scene from “Westside Story “in front of her. And even though she was aggravated, she tried to keep her cool despite everyone around her was laughing and applauding. Cofer emphasizes her objection of Latin women being compared to foods such as “Hot Tamale”, or being described as “sizzling” as opposed to using other words to describe the beauty of Latin women. Besides explaining how she was often looked upon as an object rather than a woman, Cofer talks about how she would get confused with the waiting staff. Just because of the stereotype of most Hispanic women being part of waiting staff or cleaning services. Cofer describes an incident that occurred at a restaurant where she was one of the readers during open reader night. A woman thought she was a waitress and ordered for her to brink her a cup of coffee. This harsh reality is indeed seen many times when Hispanic women are involved. Cofer had no...

(Jun. 1980): 281-308. By 1900 almost 156,000 steam engines were used in factories. This is where the steam engine first gained popularity. The article also discusses the spread of the steam engine for various uses, one of which became known as the steamboat. In spite of the importance accorded the steam engine during nineteenth-century industrialization, little is known about its rate of diffusion in the United States. Another purpose of this paper is to enhance our knowledge about the spread of this technology. New evidence on steam power use in 1820, 1850, and 1860, combined with published census data from 1870, permits quantitative estimates of the regional variations in timing, pace, and extent of usage before 1900. Unification and Integration in the American Political System

...their ancestral past e.g. Mexican, Spanish, Colombian, Puerto Rican or whomever their culture identifies with as far as an ancestral past and country is concerned. This said the emergence of citizens in the United States in relation to the Latino population brings with it an undefined people. Unlike other cultures in America who have an identifiable label or race i.e.: White, Black, Asian, Irish etc. for the Latino being defined as Hispanic was set by the Nixon administration and thus classified all Latinos as one people now known as Hispanic. Latinos have been compressed into a collective culture that at times cannot or will not identify with one another. (Fraga. P 517) What ultimately has occurred is one group of Americans is acknowledged by race-- while the others are compared by culture. Essayist Richard Rodriguez, editor of the Pacific News Service eloquently defines this point saying, “I am Hispanic in a country that traditionally insists on racial categories. I define myself not by reference to race or color but by reference to culture. (Rodriguez essay) To this point it is easy to see why gaining identity and later citizenship has been multifarious for the Latino. In comparison, in the early birth of America, new Irish citizens found it difficult to...

More Than a Color

...Matthew Yglesias Dr. Castillo Huma 1305.001 March 31, 2015 Essay Draft #1 More Than a Color In Trinidad Sanchez Jr’s “Why am I so brown” a little girl questions why she is the color she is and why it must be this way. Sanchez answers her questions with many metaphorical statements but one statement in particular stands out from the rest “because it is one of HER favorite colors”, this like many of the lines in this poem is can be interpreted in many different ways. Lines like the previous are what make poems like this very unique and interesting because of the many metaphors it uses to describe culture and Hispanic heritage. In the following lines Sanchez explains to the little girl (Raquel Guerrero) how her color ties her in with her roots. God made you brown, mi'ja color bronce--color of your raza connecting you to your raices, your story/historia as you begin moving towards your future (Sanchez 1-5) In this first stanza Sanchez explains to Raquel that God made her brown and that her skin color is much more than a color, it connects her to her race and roots with a beautiful history behind it. Hispanic culture has been responsible for many of the foods, traditions, and family orientation we have in Texas and all over the United States, Sanchez is telling Raquel that she should be proud of her color because behind the color bronce(which just means bronze) is a culture that is beautiful. In the following stanza Sanchez provides Raquel Guerrero further reasons...

Essay on Racism and Religious Discrimination in Society

...“dark” and what was life converted into under the condition of having dark skin. These two works show the deep pain suffered by both of the authors and by the nations they represent. Each and every day of both James Baldwin and Richard Rodriguez was a battle in order to prove that need to be treated as being equal to white people and not just labor force. James Baldwin touches the religious aspects of the life of minorities and Richard Rodriguez speaks about how hard  was to live with the fact that one’s skin was dark. James Baldwin in the book “The fire next time” wrote an outstanding essay called “Down at the cross - Letter from a region of my mind" which shows the reader the deep psychological and religious pressure that was experienced by all the black people, he opens the eyes to the fact that the principle of equality simply did not exist. One remarkable traits of “Down at the cross” is that Baldwin analyzes the religious aspect and importance of Christianity for black people. He starts this analysis from himself and shows how Christianity was converted into an “escape” for all the black people from the reality of life and their position within the society. The core of the essay deals with the fact that Baldwin condemns the  “black” Muslim trend within black people as an opposition to the “white” Christianity. This basically converted...

Conservative Issues

...Zulamita Robles Government Mr. Allen 3/26/14 Public Opinion Essay (Conservative) Being raised in a Hispanic Catholic Home I do highly believe I am a conservative. While thinking it through it came to mind that it may be because of how I was and am being raised or perhaps my religion or possibly even my race. Then it came to mind that being a Hispanic girl raised with Hispanic parents in a strongly enforced catholic home has greatly influenced my beliefs. We all want the same things in life.  We want freedom; we want the chance for prosperity; we want as few people suffering as possible; we want healthy children; we want to have crime-free streets. Conservatives believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty, traditional American values and a strong national defense.  We believe the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals.  Conservative policies generally emphasize empowerment of the individual to solve problems. There are several topics in which my belief of me classified as a conservative is put up to its meaning for example Abortion a Liberal would believe that A woman has the right to decide what happens with her body.  A fetus is not a human life, so it does not have separate individual rights.  The decision to have an abortion is a personal choice of a woman regarding her own body and the government must protect this right. However a Conservative would argue that a Human...

Hispanic and Latino Spiritual Paper

...Hispanic and Latino Spiritual Paper ENG/301 December 14, 2015 Hispanic and Latino Spiritual Paper I have a better comprehension and appreciation of the Hispanic and Latino culture, after reading the material this week. This culture has their way of communicating with one another. Within the Hispanic and Latino cultures we repeatedly see magic, religion, faith and tradition play big parts in their lives. In this essay, I will discuss four of the stories that I feel show how these elements play a part in their day to day lives. I have chosen four pieces, “Curving Woman,” by Alejandro Morales, “Seven Long Times,” by Piri Thomas, “Tales Told under the Mango Tree, “ by Judith Ortiz Cofer and last but not least, “The Kite,” by Ed Vega. Religion, Faith, Tradition, and Magic As I stated the Hispanic and Latino cultures rely on religion, faith, traditions and magic. I saw this in the writing, “The Curing Woman” by Alejandro Morales. This story is about Mr.Benidorm, the man of the house, impregnated a servant, and had a daughter. Once the servant's time had been served, she requested to take her daughter, Marcelina, with her. Mrs.Benidorm refused the Marcelina to go with her mother. “She had grown to love Marcelina and besides, the child was a reminder to her husband of his sins of infidelity.” (Morales, 1986). This nine-year-old girl spent the next four years with Mr. and Mrs. Benidorm and never seeing her mother during this time. Then at thirteen years...
