D side 6 - nedstående tekst omskrevet fra nutid til datid Please listen to this episode from my school years. It was snowing outside the school building. I put on my warm jacket, and my girlfriend, Melissa, who put on warm clothes as well, shivered at the thought of the cold outside. We left the building and walked hand in hand through the snow-covered streets. We tried to keep warm and almost ran down the street. When we came to the pedestrian street, a homeless man suddenly approached us. He looked really miserable, but his eyes had a very strong glow. He told us about his poor childhood. We stood still and at some point Melissa cried a little. Afterwards we were quiet for a long time. It seems like ages. He gave us one final piece of advice before we went on.
The texts in section A focus on social networking. 1. Write a summary of “Five clues that you are addicted to Facebook” (text 2) in about 150 words.

Liking Is for Cowards, Go for What Hurts

...Jonathan Franzen’s essay: ‘Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts’(2011), he talks about the problem with actual love in our modern ‘techno-consumerist’- society. Franzen starts out by describing the almost infatuated love he has had throughout the years for new gadgets. He considers his ‘relationship’ to his old Blackberry as having been almost like the sort of relationship you would normally have to another person. Furthermore he points out, that our technology has become extremely adept at creating products that correspond to our fantasy ideal of an erotic relationship. To support this statement he draws attention to the fact that the word ‘sexy’ almost always is used to describe the latest gadgets on the market. Our beloved gadgets don’t ask for anything, but they always obey our smallest winks -instantly. These sexy gadgets substitute the natural and real world, that’s indifferent to our wishes and personal needs. Problematic, Franzen thinks. A related phenomenon is the commodification of love. If you love somebody you should buy stuff for them, whether that would be diamonds as a symbol of your everlasting love or an automobile for Christmas as a symbol of your big wallet. Another nauseating tendency is Facebook and the verb ‘to like.’ To like something on Facebook – and in general, is like a commercial substitute for loving. I must say, as a frequent Facebook user I am embarrassed. There is this term of abuse, a ‘likehunter’ that is being used about a person who is obviously...

Dennis Baron's Essay 'How To Be A Woman Programmer'

...1. What is the major thesis of each essay? The thesis of Dennis Baron's essay titled "Facebook Multiplies Genders, but Offers Users the same Three Tired Pronouns" complies of the fact that Facebook has 58 different kinds of genders to choose from, yet the social media site only allows three pronouns: she, he, it. The thesis of "How to Be a 'Woman Programmer’" written by Ellen Ullman is the struggles of a woman becoming a computer programmer and enduring the sexual prejudice of man in the workplace. 2. How do their arguments differ? How are they similar? What are some of the major argumentative points each piece makes? The arguments differ in the way that Baron's essay was merely just nagging about not having more pronouns to identify others, while Ullman's argument is giving first hand stories and experiences to support her claims. The only thing similar about the arguments is that both essays are somewhat about gender issues. An argumentative point that Baron makes in her essay is that Facebook users can now identify as 58 different genders, but their friends can only wish him,l her, them a happy birthday. I love the point that Ullman makes when she states that when she was working as a computer programmer, women stood out in...

...Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts is an essay written by Jonathan Franzen. He is from America and he is a novelist and essayist. The essay by Jonathan Franzen is based on a commencement speech he delivered at Kenyon College, Ohio, USA. The essay starts talking about a relationship with his phone. He is impressed by how far out worlds technology have come and how advanced our civilization has become. He got his new smartphone and three years later, it is much more advanced than before. Jonathan Franzen is telling about how we live our lives and how we make in this case the smartphone so personify and makes us addicted to technology. Franzen is also talking about his new phone and bringing to debate about we personify and threat our new technology equipment we have with us every day. The ultimate goal with technology is “to replace a natural world that is indifferent to our wishes – a world of hurricanes and hardships and breakable hearts, a world of resistance – with a world so responsive to our wished as to be effectively, a mere extension of the self” (p.2.55-61). Then Jonathan Franzen starts debating about technology and it is trouble by real love, and has no choice to trouble love in return. The way Jonathan Franzen engaging the audience is creative and very interesting. ...I do text my parents with full paragraphs without using abbreviations. I really do not like writing, but if I have to then I will. With this class, I know I have to write and I’m willing to, but I might take longer writing in third person then first person with a topic I’m not familiar with. I am great at looking at a picture and can write a story based it. I feel comfortable writing in the English class as long as I have the time to write and think about my steps needed to write the paper. Inventory: When I took that quiz, I felt that is was accurate based on who I am. I was between being independent and social. I usually am social when I need to be but mostly independent. I was closely related to creative but was also close to pragmatic. Spatial had a five for a score. I am usually looking at the data and using it the way I think it works. I had a score of six for rational, I also had a score of five for concrete. My rational skills are high, and I think I would work on being more emotional about things that need it for writing. I believe that being concrete is good but being abstract is also a good thing. It gives the writer the big picture of their writing for a reader. Liking Is for Cowards

...Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts Essay The world we are living in has been through so many changes, and now we are living in a world filled with technology. It is not just some inconsiderable change in our everyday life, and it would not be an exaggeration if you said that technology has changed the world. It has dispensed so many new opportunities to the human kind and it is just the beginning of what technology may bring the future. One could argue whether technology has had negative or positive influence on the human kind, and you can ask yourselves whether people are using technology in a meaningful way? Maybe the human race is not clever enough to avoid being seduced by technology. The essay Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts written by Jonathan Franzen bring some essential subjects into focus. In the beginning of the essay he describes his obsession with his new BlackBerry Bold and why he got rid of the old one. He humanizes his phones and describes his relationship with them as if the phones were actual people. He says: “(…) our technology has become extremely adept at creating products that correspond to our fantasy ideal of an erotic relationship (…)” (p. 8, l. 46) He explains that the ultimate goal of technology is to replace the natural world with a world that is responsive to our wishes. Technology does not ask for anything, we can do what ever we want with it without getting into a big argument as in ‘real’ relationships, and all things considered...

...Stupid?” Nowadays it can be considered a general fact that the internet helps people in various ways, not only at work, but also in their personal lives. Most people see the internet and social networks as an enormous asset to their everyday life. However, according to Diana Schaub in her essay, “Unfriending friendship,” and Nicholas Carr in his essay, “Is Google Making Us Stupid,” the internet and social media also causes negative effects on our everyday life. Even though these two essays, both written around the year 2010, have different topics and there are certainly differences in the authors’ writing styles, they still have some similarities. These two essays share a similar theme: that the internet and social media diminish our human capabilities to think and make friends. Some differences occur in how Carr and Schaub approach their readers’, one author uses personal examples and the other shows differences in word meanings. In Carr’s article, he includes his own examples to show readers how the internet has changed his capability of reading longer texts; now his attention span has greatly decreased because he is used to short style of text on the internet. At the beginning of Carr’s essay there is a short part of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Oddyssey which Carr uses to show readers how far we have come with technology. Carr not only uses his own example of how technology changed him (for example, he is impatient and craves information instantaneously) but also shows how...

Part 1 Historical background In 1988, Lewis Llewellyn and Dai Armstrong were made redundant as a result of the closure of their town’s steel works in south Wales. Both had been employed by the firm for more than 20 years. Lewis had worked his way up from apprentice to be chief mill engineer, and Dai had progressed from “office boy” to a senior marketing post. The men belonged to the local cycle touring club, and through this had become close friends. As the prospects for continued local employment were poor, they decided to use their savings to set up a bicycle manufacturing business – an obvious choice, given their shared interest, and combined expertise. The product they selected was a “traditional” upright cycle, following a design typical of the 1940’s and 1950’s. They believed that there would be a strong “niche” market for such a product, given the upsurge in interest in cycling, and increasing consumer interest in “retro” styles. Working in Lewis’s garage, they built their first prototype. Dai persuaded a local cycle shop to...

...FACEBOOK The social networking website Facebook has become enormously popular throughout the world. As of June 2012, there were 955 million people using Facebook on a monthly basis (a 29% increase on the previous year), and on average 552 million users on a daily basis (a 32% increase) on the previous year (United States Securities and Exchange Commission, 2012). As with previous major technological developments, such as radio and television, there is now discussion within the tertiary education sector about how websites like Facebook can be used in learning and teaching. Social networking websites can be defined as online spaces which “allow individuals to present themselves, articulate their social networks, and establish or maintain connections with others” . The use of social networking sites within universities is of interest because their growing ubiquity is already making both positive and negative impacts on tertiary level learning and teaching. As a result, learners and teachers need to critically evaluate their practices in an increasingly online world. This essay will argue that Facebook can have a potentially positive impact on learning and teaching at tertiary level if used appropriately. The essay begins with an overview of how the use of Facebook can contribute to learning and teaching. It then explains the benefits of Facebook for students in terms of socialising, engagement and creativity. The essay then addresses the digital literacy skills students need in...
