American History: Our hope for the future. Veterans are the brave men and women who have served and fought for our freedom. They have risked their lives and many have died or been seriously injured in the line of duty. Some choose to be in the military for a shorter amount of time and some choose to make it a lifetime career. Veterans come from different branches such as, Army, Navy, National Guard, Air force, Marines, and Coast Guards.

If it wasn’t for the brave men and women who fought for this country it wouldn't be what it is today. Because of them we are a free country and have rights that other countries do not have. Many suffer from illnesses such as PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder), agent orange, TBI (Traumatic brain injury) …show more content…

Vfw Personal Narrative

...heart raced, my hands sweat, and my voice quivered as the first few syllables of my essay escaped my mouth. None of the public speaking rehearsals that I had painstakingly endured could have prepared me for the moment when the curtain rose and all eyes at the annual Mississippi VFW Convention stared seemingly through me. At the age of 14, I had never spoken in front of a crowd of that magnitude. As I glanced across the audience and saw the smiles that covered each of the veterans’ faces, all my apprehension vanished. The attitude of spite I had for writing dissipated as I came to fully understand that my ability to read and write had opened doors for me to learn more about my great grandfather’s life, bring joy to the members of the VFW,...

Veterans Having Trouble Finding Jobs After the Military

...Unit 6 Project Veterans Having Trouble Finding Jobs After the Military Mark Everhart Kaplan University Professor Sandra Fontana Veterans who have served this country by going to war are quickly realizing that America is not appreciating the sacrifices made for our service members. Veterans are being passed over for employment for many different reasons. Some of these reasons include Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), lack of job skills for performing civilian jobs, and the inability to cope with the transition from military to civilian life. The unemployment rate for veterans is 6.9 percent (Norman, 2012). The government and the employers need to work together to make the transition out of the military a smoother process. The Department of Veteran Affairs cannot process the applications for the G.I. Bill fast enough to accommodate the veterans. Veterans lack the job skills necessary to perform jobs in the civilian sector after the military. All military veterans should have special training, skill and mind set for the transition from military to civilian life, provided by the government and employers to ensure employability after serving their country regardless of how many years of service one has served. Veterans lack the special training and skills that are necessary to compete with the civilian population. Veterans often have jobs that cannot transfer to the civilian world (Hefling, 2011). For instance if they are an infantryman, they cannot get a job as a mechanic....

John Aguilar: A Vietnam War Soldier

...When remembering and talking about war veterans we often talk about the battles they fought or the training that they went through. However, this is a very small aspect of veterans military life and experience. There are so much more interesting and fascinating topics to talk about when discussing war veterans. The war veteran I’m researching is John Aguilar. He is a native minnesotan who was a war medic or corpsman during the vietnam war. In this interview and essay, many fascinating aspects of his past military life are talked about including what he did as a medic and his own astonishing war experiences. There are many fascinating things to consider when remembering or discussing military veterans. When remembering vietnam veterans, it is important to consider the effect boot camp has on soldiers, injuries that soldiers have during war, and how veterans are treated by civilians when they come back home. When discussing military related experiences, the effect boot camp has on soldiers is hardly considered or talked about. The following quote from an article on...

Rhetorical Analysis Essay

...English 214.05 Baldwin April 12th, 2013 Emotional Consequences Faced By Veterans and Their Families Many books, articles, or even essays that are read throughout one’s life, can at times be slightly unclear about what precisely the main idea is or what the authors true purpose is for writing that text. Most people do not understand that every writer uses rhetorical strategies throughout their writing to make their text clear and understandable for the reader. These rhetorical strategies are particularly important because they help with the clarity of complex ideas and assist the writer in getting their point across. In doing so, writers are able to make their text more effective for a wider range of people to read. In the article “Iraq, Afghanistan War Veterans Struggle With Combat Trauma,” by David Wood, and in the short story, “Gold Star,” by Siobhan Fallon, the authors use numerous amounts of rhetorical tools to help guide the reader through the text. While “Gold Star” is a short story about a wife who has lost her husband due to the war and “Iraq, Afghanistan War Veterans Struggle With Combat Trauma,” is an informative newspaper article about how the war can have severe consequences on not only the soldiers themselves but their loved ones back at home too, both text use emotive appeals that aim to inform the general public of the various emotional and psychological tolls faced by veterans and their families today. Furthermore, throughout both texts the authors delivered...

American Vertern's Day

...AMERICAN VETERNS DAY -ESSAY There is no greater sacrifice any citizen within this country could incur than to bring your own life under jeopardy for fellow Americans they may never know from, hear from, or be thanked for. It is a heavy burden for this country’s veterans to fight enemies abroad entirely in light of the interest of a nation that is compelled to give power to the people. For many of these brave men and women in uniform, what they do is always taken as contingent upon the government towards the men and woman that are enjoying the gifts of being recognized for who they are, able to speak their mind, and be praised and coveted for staying true to themselves. What many Americans that are tried and true in their service to this country are aware of now is that the liberties and freedoms that constitute their good and bad days were earned by the even worse days that veterans have endured to ensure that their kids and grandkids, as well as their friends, their peers, their lovers, and their kids and grandkids of those who would never care for them to see a brighter future. There really isn’t much of a better way to describe what their ordeals have done for the rest of us. When I started my junior year of high school, our class had a new social studies teacher. Last year, while I was a sophomore, we wished the best of luck to our last social studies teacher as he and his family flew to New York for a better life. As a veteran, fighting in Iraq and losing friends...

Vietnam War Veteran Interview

...I lined up an interview with a local Vietnam combat veteran with PTSD to discuss how being a part of a support group has improved his life, and how different life is in our community for an individual with PTSD, even while receiving treatment. However, an unforeseen family-related situation came up at the last minute, and he ended up having to cancel our meeting. To Parham 5 supplement, I watched an interview conducted by the Department of Veterans Affairs with a veteran facing PTSD. The interview was with Alan, a combat veteran who served in the Navy Reserve and the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War era. Speaking about his return to the U.S. after serving, Alan explained, “I didn’t know what to expect when I got back. I had heard different things, different stories, it was just okay. You were there, you did your job, and it was over…go to work. And that’s kind of the attitude my whole family had.” Alan, upon his return, felt like he needed to talk about what he had and was experiencing related to the war. “I was married before I went to Vietnam. When I got back, she didn’t, they didn’t, my whole family didn’t ask. They didn’t want to know. I needed to talk about things, and they didn’t want to listen.” As it did on many veterans, the lack of support took a toll on Alan’s everyday life. He began to drink heavily, stopped going to work...

Remembering a War We Want to Forget

...Essay – Remembering a War We Want to Forget Many US. Soldiers who took part in the Vietnam War experienced that the conflict divided The United States of America. There were two groups, those who went to Vietnam and those who didn’t. It all depended on social class, many men who travelled to Vietnam to fight were the majority of working-class America. Their average age was less than twenty and most of them didn’t even graduate. These young men were not soldiers, but ordinary people. Because they were less privileged than the educated kids, they fought and died in Vietnam, opposite the well educated. For many stationed the war was without any purpose; “ There were no dramatic pushes to the Rhine, no larger missions, nothing to feel a part of” – William Broyles, Veteran from the Vietnam War. Broyles describe how the war seemed meaningless for the soldiers, how 365 days passed with a lot of suffering and lost, how you were leaving when your days were up, but the war went on. The frustrated feeling of powerlessness when new soldiers arrived and were forced to go through the same destructive experience. In this living hell the only thing the soldiers could count on was each other. The Vietnam combat veterans drew this lesson “You are alone, no one else shares your experience or cares about it – no one except your ‘buddies’. Only they matter”. These men’s identities were taking from them when they joined the army, they were putted in a uniform, ordered to remove their hair and...

Ta-Nehisi Coates A Case For Reparation Essay

...Ta-Nehisi Coates argues in his essay, “A Case for Reparation” that the enslavement of African Americans is closely linked to the development of white democracy. He says, “to proudly claim the veteran and disown the slave holder is patriotism a la carte. A nation outlives his generations” (Coates IV). He is saying that veteran get to be recognized for their service in the military but refuses to acknowledge the fact about slave owners. By acknowledging one and disowning the other, the nation is picking out the only what best fit for the country and completely forgetting what slave owner have brought to this country. Americans cannot ignore the terrible history of slavery and racism that had happen hundreds of years ago. Slavery dated back thousands of years ago and black people was discriminated because of the color of their skin. Racism is exemplified this article when Ta-Nehisi Coates talks about contract seller do business in North Lawndale. For Instance, He says “The men who peddled contracts in North Lawndale would sell homes at inflated prices and then evict families who could not pay—taking their down payment and their monthly installments as profit....

Importance of Human Resource Management

...Gowan, 2005). This is a central and strategic organizational activity but at the same time of increasing complexity and importance. It includes recruiting the right people for the job, orienting and training, planning personnel needs, managing wages and salaries, providing benefits and incentives, conducting job analyses, evaluating performance, communicating with all employees at all levels, and resolving disputes. Acquiring an overall view of Human Resource Management with respect to integrating new knowledge includes explanation and examples. I will review, present, and explain in this essay that in all companies, proper management of human resources is vital to being a successful business; human resources must be a critical department within the functional area of an organization. The basic purposes of this essay is to emphasis and culminate the principles of Human Resources Management by describing the application of the knowledge learned in the field of human resource management, with emphasis on six areas: EEO and Affirmative Action, Human Resources Planning, Recruitment, and Selection, Human Resources Development, Compensation and Benefits, Safety and Health, and Employee and Labor Relations. However, for this knowledge to be relevant, all these HRM areas need to be working together, and need to correspond with the overall business strategy, Dessler(2000). Biblical Worldview Essay

...Biblical Worldview Essay As I have learned in this course, and the last five months of rebirth and renewal in my Christian faith, we all are created in the image of God. He desires a personal relationship with every one of us, and He seeks each of us out to have that relationship. Yet many of us turn away from Him and his love for a multitude of reasons. Inspired by my own life experiences, my future career plans are to become a peer mentor, or crisis counselor helping other fellow veterans with their life challenges. That is if I ever go back to work, as my accident in September has left me unable to work, in which case I would then use my knowledge and life experiences to do the same but in a volunteer capacity. I feel that this is what I am destined to do, and on the day of my wreck, God gave me that message. By using a foundation based on my Christian worldviews, and personal experiences I feel that I can greatly help to inspire, motivate, and encourage my patients to not give up, to know that they are not alone in their struggles, and that everyone has a life plan, they just need guidance finding it. One example I could use without evangelizing to my patients is the power of renewal. A lot of veterans with PTSD usually do not have a strong Christian faith as I once didn’t, and sometimes totally discount God and religion, (as I had done). Renewal is the process of restoring spiritual strength coming from new birth. The experience of coming home from a combat zone after...

Soldier´S Home

...Essay Soldier’s Home & Captain Savage and His Battlefield Raiders Many War veterans says every fight leaves a scar, and sometimes some of these scars won’t heal. The story “Soldier’s Home” by Ernest Hemingway is about a young American soldier returning home, after having been to war in Europe. After settling down at home he feels miss placed as if no one can or will understand how he feels. This results in the young man commits, what seems to be, suicide The story’s main character called Krebs returns home after having served at the frontlines in WWI. As he returns he immediately feels that something is wrong, and he realises that he has changed drastically leaving him as an empty shell without any real feelings. At the same time he experiences he has the need to tell his story, so that he could have his deeds accepted, but instead of listening to him, everybody neglects him, because of the fact, that it is war stories, and everybody had already been fed up with war stories from the other veterans returning home earlier then Krebs. Krebs story is a good example on what could happened if a person is neglected after having endure the trauma of having been witness to the cruelties of war, friends dying, children killed. Even today, many war veterans suffers of the same kind of trauma as Krebs did, and today many of the war veterans commits suicide because of the lack of help being offered for their service. As a person Krebs seems to be a polite person who have seen...

...ANALOGY ESSAY SAMPLES • While not perfect, these samples from students past should give you an idea on how to organize and approach this essay. • If you have any questions, please ask. Should We Pay? Many issues have been plaguing the sports world recently, especially the question of paying college athletes. Are athletics so important that colleges need to put out millions of dollars per year just to pay for students to play for them? Paying college athletes is like throwing a lit match into a haystack: once the fire is started, it just keeps burning, making a bad situation worse. There are several differences between the haystack and paying athletes. To start, throwing a needle in a haystack is a totally negative concept; everything will burn. However, with paying college athletes, some people can find reasons why this could be a positive thing. For instance, some believe paying athletes will bring more competition to the table and make some colleges much more prestigious than others. Others say this will bring in more money and more revenue. A second difference is the end of the situation. At the end of the fire, there is smoke and it will eventually put itself out. However, this is an issue that cannot extinguish itself. No matter what the verdict, someone is going to be unhappy and the "fire" will keep burning. [pic]Despite these differences there are many similarities between the two. One similarity is the haystack going up in flames and the...
