1 Compare the Realist movements in France and America. How were they different and how did these differences manifest themselves in the art of Gustave Courbet and Winslow Homer?

The Realist movement was a stage in many countries such as France and America that brought awareness to things unseen and expressed a closer look to social classes without the idealization. In France Realist movement, Gustave Courbet was a painter that conveyed the rural area where he grew up which was made up of the lower class. The paintings from Manet and Titan both show the idea of a modern-day goddess in that period. In Manet’s work it displays the reality of modern Paris, where wealthy men buy academic nudes and keep mistresses as well as visit prostitutes so his theme is raunchier. In both paintings the artist puts the goddess as the main subject but has additional figures to add to the overall composition and help tell the story. For example, in Titan’s painting there is two figures in the back searching through a wedding chest possibly looking for clothes for the goddess and a dog by her legs showing faithfulness in the marriage she is in. Manets’s Olympia has another figure which seems to be an assistant to the goddess and a cat by her feet representing playfulness. Feature wise the paintings are very different, Manet’s painting of Olympia is more realistic as the lady is angular, awkward but has a more business look by her returning strong gaze with a daring confident feel engaging the viewer visually. In contrast, Titan’s Venus of Urbino used colors to add a sensuous feel to the painting, the use of deep colors such as red for the bed and black for the wall that hides half her
