Lyric Essay
“You are appreciated.” This is the main point that Tupac is projecting throughout his song to make sure that his listeners and his mother understand. This song, “Dear Mama”, was written to tell the mishaps and unfortunates he faced through his childhood up until his early adulthood. Also he tells the story about life growing up with a single mother as a parent and having siblings that he also shared the same pain with him. He begins the song by letting his mother know he is grateful for everything she has done for him.
In life everybody will eventually need someone to lean on whether it’s just for comfort or for help. “Through the drama I can always depend on my mama.” (Tupac Dear Mama Verse 3). Most people lean on family members or close friends but very seldom do will they ask for help from anyone outside of that. In this song Tupac depends on his mother to help raise him because he is young and growing. He goes by saying that no matter if it was right or wrong his mother would always have his back. He explains how his family didn’t have anything but his mama always made something happen so that him and his sister could eat. Even though his mother did drugs she always provided for her family, “and even as a crack fiend mama, you always was a black queen mama” (Tupac Dear Mama Verse 1)
In the song Dear Mama Tupac explains how he caused his mother so much stress and pain. “There’s no way I can pay you back, but my plan is to make you understand. You are appreciated.” (Tupac Dear Mama Chorus) He was always acting out by not going to school and getting in and out of trouble, which also included running from the police, things of that sort. Tupac didn’t realize at the time that he was hurting her more than helping her. Tupac is basically saying that there is nothing he can do to take away the pain and stress he had caused his mama but he wanted to let her know that he did appreciate everything she did.
From being in trouble all of the time at school and being in trouble with the police, you could say Tupac made a lot of mistakes, but his mother never lost hope for him. “Cause when I was low you was there for me and never left me alone because you cared for me.” (Tupac Dear Mama Verse 2) Majority of the time Tupac stayed in trouble due to the fact he had no father and a very difficult childhood but, with the understanding of his circumstances his mother was always there to correct him when he was wrong. Tupac explains how he encountered a bad experience while he was in jail. “It was hell hugging on my mama from a jail cell.” Tupac is now realizing that he can’t change everything that he has done, but he would like to thank her by making sure she realizes how much he appreciates everything she did for him and also that he understands mother’s make mistakes too. It takes a loving and understanding son to be able to take in all of this mother’s mistakes and to transform the information into something positive. He didn’t stop and judge her for her wrong doings instead he embraced them and chose to be thankful for everything she did right. The same thing with his mother, she knows very well that her son Tupac made mistakes but she didn’t down him or disown him, instead she stood by his side like a real mother would do. It just goes to show that you don’t have to have the perfect life but family is what makes it worth living.

Lyric Censorship: Language Is Power

...Lyric Censorship: Language is Power Words create powerful emotions in all of us. They are used to express our feelings, thoughts and ideas, as well as communicate with one another. There are countless examples in history where we see language equating power. Within those examples we see people in the position of power, using this power of language to degrade their enemies and those they consider beneath them, and shape language in their favor. Music ties into language completely. The words of song lyrics convey powerful messages. As language is power, those in control seek to repress the power of this language in music, attempting to keep the power in their favor. But this attempt at censorship only gives those words even more influence and any attempt to infringe our right to free speech should be fought for to prevent its loss. The censorship of lyrics has occurred globally and can be dated back as far as music and poetry can be traced. Let’s take Asia as an example. Under the ruling of the Taliban in Afghanistan, music became a crime (Korpe, 2004). Instruments were burned, and people were severely punished for singing or creating any kind of music that was not deemed acceptable by the government. In Kabal, President Rabbani went as far as to create an Office for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, which was used to regulate the lyric of song in the favor of the government, and punish those who spoke ill towards those in power. In Pakistan...

How to Sing a Song

... • Get the children to take over the ‘Call’ function as soon as possible from you. You are modelling skills and empowering them to model to each other as well. Children leading others is a very powerful re-inforcer and motivator. 2) Injecting backing tracks into lessons at key points • allows you ‘pick up’ or ‘calm down’ a lesson depending upon the mood. • allows you to overlay any lyrical content that you want to highlight from your lesson. • You can use songs from Sing Up website but you can also simply use the backing tracks of some key songs Example Let’s Dance backing track from Sing Up website Suggest some lyrics to practise to this track from any work you have done today. Can you see a way in which children could be asked to suggest some simple lyrics that summarise key points of a lesson? How would engaging children creatively in the song help them to learn the content of your lessons? How would it affect their attention and involvement? What other ‘support’ might you need to give then to help them come up with some lyrical ideas? How could you build this in to the work you do on a topic so that this support is already there before you play the track? eg: Key word...

“My Last Duchess” and “Porphyria’s Lover”,

...Gendered Violence in Browning’s Poems “My Last Duchess” and “Porphyria’s Lover”, both written by Robert Browning in 1842, contain strong elements of gendered sexual violence that is likely a product of the repression and censorship that typified the Victorian Age. While “Porphyria’s Lover” is much more graphic and obvious in its depiction of sexual violence, “My Last Duchess” contains a number of elements that are dark and disturbing in their own right. Most important of these is the objectification of the duchess, which reduces her identity to that of another display in a collection. Both similarities and differences between the poems will be analyzed, including theme, symbolism, rhyme scheme, tone, and the nature of the sexual violence itself. This will show that the gendered sexual violence present in Browning’s poems is indicative of their historical context, primarily the social norms of the time. There are strong similarities between the two poems, particularly in theme, where both poems display a preservation of the mens’ idea of the feminine in a form that fit their ideal. In “My Last Duchess” this is seen in the opening lines, “That's my last Duchess painted on the wall / Looking as if she were alive . . .” and a little later in lines nine and ten, when it is revealed that the Duke keeps the painting curtained so that only he can enjoy the sight and smile of his late wife (1-2,9-10). In “Porphyria’s Lover” the theme is present in the narrator’s desire to fix Porphyria...

...Where are we? What the hell is going on? The dust has only just begun to fall, Crop circles in the carpet, sinking, feeling. Spin me round again and rub my eyes. This can't be happening. When busy streets a mess with people would stop to hold their heads heavy. Hide and seek. Trains and sewing machines. All those years they were here first. Oily marks appear on walls Where pleasure moments hung before. The takeover, the sweeping insensitivity of this still life. Hide and seek. Trains and sewing machines. (Oh, you won't catch me around here) Blood and tears, They were here first. Mmm, what you say? Mm, that you only meant well? Well, of course you did. Mmm, what you say? Mm, that it's all for the best? Ah of course it is. Mmm, what you say? Mm, that it's just what we need? And you decided this. Mmm what you say? What did she say? Historical Foundations

...Candice Prestel Historical Foundations DB 2 Dr. Kimberly Roff September 1, 2012 A class of medieval lyric poets, called troubadours, flourished principally in southern France, eastern Spain and northern Italy from the 11th to 13th centuries (Dictionary.com, 2012). They wrote songs and poems of a complex metrical form in langue d’oc, mainly about courtly love. In courtly love the lover sees his ability to resist these temptations and rise above his own base humanity as evidence of his spiritual purity (Syre, 2013). According to Syre (2013), “The smitten knight or nobleman must be willing to perform any deed to win his lady’s favor, the lady often being his lord’s wife”. The trobairitz is the female version of the troubadour but their poems were mainly focused on romantic love (Dictionary.com, 2012). The trobairitz used poetry to share stories of romantic longing and unattainable love, focusing on the feelings associated with romantic love such as longing, suffering, and a desire to do whatever possible to have the feeling of love reciprocated (Career Education Corporation, 2010). The troubadours are said to have “invented” romantic love as we know it today by the conventions and vocabulary that we use to describe it (Syre, 2013). According to Syre (2013), “to love is to suffer, to wander aimlessly, unable to concentrate on anything but the mental image of the beloved, to give up life for a dream”. While reducing women to barely more than objects of male desire...

Some forms of censorship such as warning labels for parents can be helpful. However the censorship of music is just not right, and the government has no right to do so. All too often the government gets on a self righteous feeling and thinks that it is it’s right to control what goes in or out of this so called “free nation’s” minds. Censorship in music falls into one of those categories in which the American people and the American government, which is supposed to be a representation of the people, have extremely conflicting ideas on the subject. Some say that the government should regulate the music industry. They say that the American people don’t know what is best for them as a whole. Along with working with this document I experienced many different instances of being enlightened with new information from other secondary sources. Going back to the primary document, The Declaration of Independence was the single greatest primary document that could be used in this paper. Working with it, discovering what each bill and what each sentence meant was extremely influential on how I view America today. Of Course, people back before the Declaration was signed and put in place would not have felt real freedom until this document gave it to them.
