...US Financial Crisis US Financial Crisis This paper aims to describe the US Financial Crisis in terms of causes, impact, and remedial actions taken by the public and private sectors. It presents the thesis that the financial crisis is also a crisis of values that prompts a reevaluation of the premises of American capitalism. In particular, that prosperity is the foundation of peace and order. A review of literature provides the basis for a short commentary on the subject. Preliminary review of literature on the subject brings to fore some distinct patterns in consumer and investors behavior that make them peculiarly venerable. First is the tendency of investors to join the bandwagon of speculative investment and of putting their money where others put theirs. Second is an apparent lack of understanding on the relationship between risk and returns. Third is an apparent lack of appreciation for the principles of supply and demand. The principle states that excessive supply will reduce the price and demand for a product to the advantage of the buyer, while a lack of supply will increase demand and price of a product to the advantage of the seller. Causes Economists stress the importance of tracing the root causes of the financial crisis in order to provide a systemic solution to the present financial crisis. Most references present the cause of the financial crisis to be the “subprime mortgages.” However, subprime mortgages by itself did not cause the housing bubble...

...ABSTRACT In the recent years China has been seen as a major competition in the international economic market. It has been replacing many western states as the top trading and investment partner in many African states, and for decades it has been one of Africa’s best friends, helping in the decolonization process and building key infrastructure projects on the continent. China has been providing many African governments with cheap loans in exchange for securing their means of accumulating natural resources based on the principle of non-intervention and respect for sovereignty, which gives no strings attached. For more than a decade, diplomatic relations between China and South Africa have been marked a great growing relationship between both states. From a period of no official ties to limited interaction between the South African and Chinese Governments, the relationship has subsequently developed to become one of the closest between African and Asian states. Growing economic engagement, which underpins the warm ties between the two states, has put South Africa amongst China’s top three trading partners on the continent. Moreover, China is an emerging market economy; with a fast track of being the next economic rising superpower in the world and its current relations between it and Africa continue to grow fast with foreign direct investment increasing thirty-fold between 2003 and 2011, from US$491m to US$14.7 billion. In 2012, China pledged US$20 billion of loans to Africa over...

...Government Policy and Business Strategy 10 10. Conclusion 12 11. References 13 1. Introduction All nations are attentive to compete efficiently in the international market. Competitiveness doesn't depend simply on the value of individual firms, but also on the socioeconomic system and the industries of a nation. The rapidly changeable situations of the free world markets transcribe that nations fully utilize their comparative advantages to become or remain thriving in the future (Farr, 1990). Economic and political leaders must estimate the opportunities and threats from the foreign environments so as to put up convenient domestic strategies that shore up the weaknesses of their nations and take advantages of its strengths. This essay will illustrate the aspects of German weaknesses as well as competitive strengths that have had a significant impact either positively or negatively on the country's economy and its position in the European community and the world. ...robin blackburn THE SUBPRIME CRISIS I n the summer of 2007 many leading banks in the us and Europe were hit by a collapse in the value of mortgage-backed securities which they had themselves been responsible for packaging.* To the surprise of many, the poisonous securities turned out to constitute a major portion of their ultimate asset base. The defaults fostered a credit crunch as all financial institutions hoarded cash and required ever widening premiums before lending to one another. The Wall Street investment banks and brokerages haemorrhaged $175 billion of capital in the period July 2007 to March 2008, and Bear Stearns, the fifth largest, was ‘rescued’ in March, at a fire-sale price, by JP Morgan Chase with the help of $29 billion of guarantees from the Federal Reserve. Many of the rest only survived by selling huge chunks of preferred stock, with guaranteed premium rates of return, to a string of ‘sovereign funds’, owned by the governments of Abu Dhabi, Singapore, South Korea and China, among others. By the end of January 2008, $75 billion of new capital had been injected into the banks, but it was not enough. In the uk the sharply rising cost of liquidity destroyed the business model of a large mortgage house, leading to the first bank run in the uk for 150 years and obliging the British Chancellor first to extend nearly £60 billion in loans and guarantees to its depositors and then to take the concern, Northern Rock, into public ownership. In late January Société...

...CASE: SM-136 DATE: 10/24/04 BETTER MEDICINE THROUGH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INTRODUCTION The health care industry in the United States was troubled. Most of the world’s state-of-the-art health care research occurred in U.S. university and corporate laboratories. Similarly, most of the best centers in the world for delivery of health care were located in the U.S. However, the costs of health care in the United States were exploding and overall quality, along many dimensions, was not increasing. For U.S. consumers it was the best of times and the worst of times—health care services were often terrific if judged by the ability of individual physicians to do more for patients and yet, as judged on almost any broad parameter such as life expectancy or infant mortality, the United States was at best average compared to other developed countries. In most developed countries, spending on health care grew dramatically over the past several years. This increase in spending, combined with lower overall economic growth, pushed up the share of health care expenditure as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) of OECD countries from an average 7.8 percent in 1997 to 8.5 percent in 2002. By comparison, the share of GDP spent on health care remained almost unchanged from 1992 to 1997 (Exhibit 1). In the United States, health care expenditure grew 2.3 times faster than GDP, rising from 13 percent in 1997 to 14.6 percent in 2002. Spending was $5,267 per capita in 2002, almost 140 percent...
