Essay On Jonestown

When I first heard about Jonestown a little over a year ago, my first thought was that Jim Jones was just a mentally disturbed and paranoid preacher and his following must have been compromised entirely by gullible people. This is the second college course in which I have studied the Peoples Temple and I have learned that there were so many more dynamics at play than I ever could have guessed on my own. It intrigued me how so many people could end their own lives and their children’s lives under the direction of one man. A lot of sources simply document the horror that occurred by describing the actions of the members and displaying photos of the end result. Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple, directed by Stanley Nelson, actually …show more content…
The mass suicide in Jonestown seems to be a product of both obedience and fear. When the community was gathered one last time at the pavilion in Jonestown, the place was surrounded by armed guards. Those who questioned what they were about to do were quickly dismissed or put straight by Jones or other Temple members.

Jim Jones’ persuasion was also key to the formation and eventual destruction of the Peoples Temple. The majority of the Peoples Temple members were the needy and neglected: the poor, the elderly, African Americans, addicts, and convicts. Jones knew how to appeal to these people; he performed “miracles” for them. Peoples Temple members had found everything they could want through Jim Jones: racial harmony, a sense of purpose, and relief from feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness.

The Peoples Temple attracted many of its members because it provided them an alternative way of viewing their lives; it gave many people who were downtrodden a sense of purpose, and even transcendence. But it did so at a cost, forcing them to disown their former friendships and beliefs, giving up their previous lives, and teaching them to fear anything outside of the Temple. Following Jones became their only choice. By controlling the information to which members would be exposed, Jim Jones effectively stifled any dissent that might arise within the

Visionary Leader

...[Title Here, up to 12 Words, on One to Two Lines] Jim Jones Visionary Leader/Ethical Leader Synthesis Essay In this essay I will explain why Jim Jones was a Visionary Leader but by no means an ethical leader. In many ways Jim Jones was decades ahead of his time with regards to social issues. His leadership helped many disadvantaged people in Indianapolis, Indiana. At first glance it may appear he used his Visionary Leadership for a higher cause; however his unethical pursuits, ultimately resulted in the downfall of his church, his followers and himself when 914 members of his congregation committed suicide after “drinking the Kool Aid”. Visionary Leadership From early in his life Jim Jones had a vision of the world he wanted to live in. Jim Jones was born the only child of a disabled veteran father and working mother during the Great Depression. His poor upbringing shaped his vision of a world in which all people were equal. As an adult he began to attend uni-racial churches in Indianapolis. In 1961 he became the first white man to adopt and African-American child in Indiana (Ryan, 2011). Shortly thereafter he became disenfranchised with the segregation, of the congregations, in the churches he attended. In response to this social norm of the time, Jim Jones visionary leadership began. He started by establishing the Peoples Temple and invited all races and social demographics to join his congregation. Jim Jones encouraged Demographic Diversity (USAF) because...

...Tahzma Wicker Ms.Pescia British Literature 29 October 2015 Unit 1 Essay: Evil in Literature Evil has taken over the world. It is a cynical type of way of expressing yourself. Evil is profoundly immoral. The concept is universal. It is one thing that most of the human society have in common. Evil can come from within a person’s soul, the hatred towards another, and the jealousy a person feels. One source of evil can come from a person’s soul. “By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.” (Macbeth, III, I, 44-45) When one of the witches says that something evil is coming then Macbeth enters the room is the witches feeling the evil in their soul. Jim Jones said “To me death is not a fearful thing, it’s living that’s cursed.” (Jones, p. 2) Basically if you have a bad feeling about something 9/10 it’s going to become true especially if it is a bad feeling. Another source of evil is the hatred people have towards another person. “Out damned spot! Out. I say!” (Macbeth, I, I. 25) That is a quote spoken by Lady Macbeth, she is mad because her guilt is taken over so she is mad at herself. Another quote spoken by Lady Macbeth “What’s done is done.”(Macbeth, III, II. 8-12) meaning that she wants Macbeth to be king so bad that she doesn’t want to look back on the past. Certain characters have so much hate towards another that their willing to do the most demented thing to show vile. The jealousy a person feels can also be a root of evil. In the play Macbeth...

The Seventies

...Runninghead: THE SEVENTIES AND NIXON’S LEGACY The Seventies and Nixon’s Legacy Carlos Michael Padilla HIST145: The American Experience Since 1945 Marvin Frohock March 5, 2008 The Seventies and Nixon’s Legacy “Streaking to the 1970s” was a phrase a group of former high school students made up as they reminisced about the butt dancing, cheek planters, also known as the BBITNs (pronounced BEE-bittens), which meant buffalo buffs in the nude who dashed brazenly, almost daringly across a playing field, the heart of a school campus, and even across a television screen during a major award ceremony. Such was the decade that preceded the conformity and complacency of the 1950s, and the sexual revolution and cultural renaissance that echoed during the 1960s. The decade of the 1970s ushered in the resignation of a president, the ending of a major Southeast Asian conflict, and the birth of two new forms of youth culture identity – streaking and disco. The 1970s began with the Beatles releasing Let It Be, which would be their last album, the Kent State shooting involving the death of the four students, the conviction of Charles Mansion for the murder of actress Sharon Tate, and the conviction of American soldiers for killing entire towns of Vietnamese villagers. This action marked the beginning of the end for America’s support of the American soldier. The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War lasted between 1959 and 1975, ending with...

Drinking The Kool-Aid Rhetorical Analysis

...Drinking the Kool-Aid? On November 18, 1978, at a commune often called “Jonestown” in the jungle of Guyana, 900 people died in a mass murder/suicide; all were members of the Peoples Temple, an American religious cult. At the request of their leader, men and women administered lethal doses of cyanide-laced punch to over 300 infants and children before gulping down their own. How could so many people be convinced to kill their babies and themselves? His name was James Warren Jones. Like his idol, Hitler, he was a dominant propagandist, a charismatic leader, and an evil human being. Summaries In the piece “Propaganda under a Dictatorship” (1958/2016), Aldous Huxley, renowned English novelist, and Oxford graduate expands on ideas he first presented in his 1932 novel, Brave New World, which examines a futuristic culture in which no individual thought takes form. Huxley’s essay explores the practical use of propaganda by Adolph Hitler in controlling the minds of eighty million German people in the years leading to the Second World War. He examines, with chilling account, Hitler’s...

Arguing Cause

...Arguing Cause Essay In January 1993, Adolf Hitler became the chancellor of Germany and with this title came the harsh persecution and murder of 6,000,000 Jews and the destruction of 5,000 Jewish communities. These Jews were victims of Germany’s deliberate and systematic attempt to annihilate the entire Jewish population. In a time of economic hardship, after the loss of a large amount of territory in World War I, the Nazi party gained the advantage in the political system of Germany and used a vicious propaganda campaign against political opponents (Franklin). This government was soon consolidated and within a year of taking office, Hitler was in absolute control of Germany. With grassroots organization, a police infrastructure and secret police, the Nazis were blamed for Germany’s ills and terrorized, beaten, killed or sent to concentration camps in an effort to eliminate the race (Marrus). Many have questioned the motives of the Holocaust and tried to find a name to blame or an explanation for the actions the followers took who seemed to have no issues following their leader without questioning the actions they were being told to take. Naturally, people blame the key initiator and conceptualizer, Adolf Hitler (Marrus). Without hiding any hatred towards the Jews or showing any remorse or regret for his actions, Hitler lead a nation to believe that the Jews were a race of sin. Did one person shatter the ability of a world full of people to think for themselves? Was it the...

Technology can be used for all types of things, from science applications to mechanical engineering. Changing the way something is done often improves it. This is the heart of technology. Technology has evolved into nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is a “technology executed on the scale of less than 100 nanometers, the goal of which is to control individual atoms and molecules, especially to computer chips and other microscopic devices.” Nanotechnology may one day improve the quality of life, thereby extending the life span of humans, by using “small autonomous robot, or nanobot, that can be sent into the human body to repair cells and cure cancers.” (nanotechnology). It is the continued advancement in nanotechnology that has been used to downsize the combative drones that we associate...
