Character of Liz “Women are never stronger than when they arm themselves with their weaknesses,” is a heartwarming quote by Madame Marie du Deffand. Speaking for any woman out there with a breaking point or weakness. Speaking of women, the most recent article I’ve read is titled The Crucible by Arthur Miller. In the Crucible, Elizabeth Proctor had to be the woman of her household, but still keep her sanity in the Salem village. Elizabeth Proctor is the woman I am able to describe by using many characteristics. But I will finish describing her throughout this essay with only these three characteristics: loyal, suspicious and cold. Elizabeth Proctor was a loyal woman and she stayed true to her loved ones. In the beginning of Act Two, John Proctor enters their home carrying his gun and Elizabeth greets him with suspicion, “What keeps you so late? It’s almost dark.” said Elizabeth, it seemed as though she was questioning what he was so occupied with during his time outside. As the conversation continues on, Elizabeth translates her suspicion into questions. Before Elizabeth’s question, John asked how she was feeling but Elizabeth couldn’t help but to ask if he went to Salem that afternoon. “You come so late I thought you’d gone to Salem” said Elizabeth. Her skipping over John’s question about her well-being and questioning if he went to Salem demonstrates her suspicion of John and where he has been. After a short time, John goes on to tell her about how he was alone with Abigail and Elizabeth hardly responded with a sentence. “John, if it were not Abigail that you must go to hurt, would you falter now? I think not” said Elizabeth. Elizabeth as though, John won’t go to Salem because he might be trying to save Abigail. In addition to Elizabeth’s suspicion, she says, “John, you are not open with me.” Elizabeth seems as though she is on edge with her thoughts about John. The honesty and trust between them are falling apart. But Elizabeth feels the lack of honesty more than John does, which results in her actions of
