Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, and causes the most deaths. This specific tumor originates in the melanocytes of the epidermis layer of the skin. Melanocytes are responsible for producing the pigments in the skin. Melanoma typically looks like an abnormal mole on the skin. A majority of the time the spots are black or brown in color, but in some cases can be skin colored, pink, red, purple, blue, or white. This form of skin cancer affects nearly twice as many men as women. In 2016 it is estimated that 46,870 men will be diagnosed with invasive melanomas, and 29,510 women will also be diagnosed (Melanoma, 2016).

This means that whoever is providing care is responsible for making sure that the patient is able to change their own dressing once they go home. In order to do this the nurse should change the initial dress herself, but explain what they are doing along the way. Then they should get verbal understanding from the patient. In addition to this they should make sure the patient does not have any infections at the site of the incision. At this point the patient should be feeling a relief of pain, and can soon be sent home. When discharging a patient it is important that the caregiver provides them with the necessary materials for a proper dressing change. The patient should also return home with written instructions on how to correctly take their antibiotics, and pain medication (A Client with Malignant Melanoma, p.1).
Although malignant melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer it is easily preventable, and can be treated. When possible precautions should be taken to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. It is important to see a doctor is you are exhibiting any of the signs or

Argumentative Essay On Designer Babies

...genome. One such fix is modification of the body to have tumor-fighting cells to fight cancer better than chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. A Rosenburg case of a patient with malignant melanoma was shown to use gene therapy to make T-cells (killer white blood cells) specifically aimed at tumor cells. Melanoma is an incredibly dangerous form of cancer because “once malignant melanoma has metastasized, with cells from the primary tumor seeding themselves elsewhere in the body to grow secondary tumors, the prognosis becomes truly dismal. (Spiesel)” What Rosenburg did was he picked out a special T-cell that could recognize antigens on the melanoma cells. Then the T-cells were injected back into the patient’s body and regressed the melanoma. Another case of melanoma treatment was where a melanoma patient had their cells “genetically engineered to produce the killer T-cells that targeted the melanoma cells. (Spiesel)” The T-cells then multiplied and brutally attacked the tumor cells with no side effects. Now what genetic engineering wants to do is to advance to the point where scientists can look at a tumor, determine what type of T-cell to use against the tumor, and construct the T-cells necessary. The most controversial type of Genetic Engineering is Designer Babies, discussed earlier in this essay though not fully in depth. Designer Babies are embryos put through in vitro fertilization for special traits and to be also scanned for genetic or sex linked diseases. Then, the embryo...

Skin Cancer

...behaviour, exposure to the sun and its harmful radiation is a daily occurrence for majority of people in the world (Stanton et al, 2004). Therefore, not only does unprotected exposure increase the likelihood of developing skin cancer (Livingston et al, 2003), it is a universal risk that has the ability to affect us all. Given its universality, overexposure to the sun is a primary health concern in Australia, especially Queensland, which has the highest rates of skin cancer and malignant melanoma incidences in the world (Dobbinson et al, 2008; Stanton et al, 2004). Annually 380,000 cases of skin cancer are reported in Australia (Robinson et al, 2008). It has been estimated that more than 12,500 cases of melanoma are diagnosed each year (Melanoma Institute Australia, 2012). What makes this statistic more alarming is that melanoma only accounts for 2.3% of all skin cancers but causes 75% of deaths relating to skin cancer, making it the third most common type of cancer for Australian women and men (Melanoma Institute Australia, 2012). In order to create awareness to the dangers associated with unprotected exposure, numerous campaigns, through mediums such as radio, television and print, have been utilised to try and convey this message (Robinson et al, 1997). However, given the prevalence of skin cancer in today’s society (Abroms et al, 2003), more action-oriented strategies are needed to transcend past knowledge and straight to intervention. In order to implement these strategies...
