Racial profiling is a problem that has been going on in the United States for far too long. Everyday, people are being pulled over and searched just because of their race or because of their ethnic background.
Police profiling is defined as being law enforcement officers targeting people based on a specific trait of theirs such as their race, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, or gender. One branch of police profiling that has been in the news a lot lately although it has been a problem for many years is racial profiling. Many people automatically think of black people when they hear the words racial profiling, when in fact, it is a problem amongst other races as well such as Mexican, Asian, and Middle Eastern. Racial profiling has led to many lawsuits and deaths recently and is a growing problem in the United States, as it has led to riots and protests. One case of racial profiling is the Michael Brown case. Michael was a 17 year old teenager from Ferguson, MIssouri who was gunned down by a white police …show more content…
Some think it is an essential part of preventing terrorist attacks if officers profile people based on their ethnicity and racial background, so long as they don't infringe on the person's rights. Supporters of racial profiling also think that it can potentially decrease crime rates as a whole if officers profile right. But despite these things, there are obvious cons to racial profiling, the most obvious being that racial profiling is an extremely racist thing to do. To target someone based on their skin color and racial background is wrong and can lead to very strong emotions and actions by the ones being targeted. It could also lead to people feeling unsafe in their own neighborhoods because they feel as though they are constantly being watched by police officers who are on

...backgrounds and hold very different values, beliefs, experiences and this has an effect on their opinion on law enforcement’s use of racial profiling. When it comes to racial profiling there are people who support that use of it and others completely reject the idea of police use of racial profiling. “Personal experiences with the police, particularly those in which residents believe they have been the target of racial profiling, have also emerged as strong predictors of perceptions about profiling. Perhaps not so surprisingly, bad experiences with police have been found to negatively impact perceptions of police” (Graziano et al. 2010 p 4). This quote is significant because it tells us that people who have bad...

Essay On Racial Profiling

...After the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States, the American government began "clearing the nation of thousands of its Muslims" ("Arab"22). Fear of another deadly attack had crippled not only the Bush Administration, but also the entire nation. The Bush Administration implemented a new tactic of prevention: racial profiling. Racial profiling has caused millions of innocent “Arab-looking” people to lose their lives because of racial bigotry. "There is absolutely no evidence to support claims of superiority" (Swedlund 60); these claims of superiority are the government's inability to accurately profile terrorists and provide civilians with false protection. Racial profiling is an excuse for blatant racism of minority groups...

Essay On Racial Profiling

...The Problem of Racial Profiling Racial profiling is a serious issue of social importance in the United States. Many believe it is wrong to judge someone by their color or race. Racial profiling is suspecting a person because of a race has committed an offense. We should care about this because some of the law enforcement are taking this too far, where they would pull over certain group of people just because of their ethnicity. Us citizens should consider this issue because stereotypes does not determines a person’s life. I believe this is wrong but it is part of our community that people are being judged too quickly. This would still be an issue and it would make many good police officers look bad. Racial profiling can be beneficial thing...

Racial Profiling Argumentative Essay

...The act of judging someone based on the color of their skin may sound like a thing of the past, but many cases are being presented today where minorities find themselves as the victims of racial profiling by police and government officials. This leads many minorities to feel targeted by them, and even harbor mistrust and suspicion. The social problem that I’m focusing on is racial profiling and the effects that it has on communities and society overall. Racial profiling is a widespread problem in society that often makes communities have strained relationships and a mistrusting relationship, which leads to a greater chance of having conflict between the two. Racial profiling is defined as, “The discriminatory practice by law enforcement officials of targeting individuals for suspicion of crime...

Racial Profiling Argument Essay

...I am writing today to inform the public of the disparities within the workplace. As a concerned student from Health Sciences High, I wanted to discuss the issue of employers racial profiling applicants. I hope to inform the public of this issue, so something in the near future can be done. While doing research, I have noticed that jobless youth are struggling to find work, with and without a graduate degree, however, specifically black jobless applicants are struggling even more. David Francis, employee at the National Bureau of Economic Research, wrote, “job applicants with white names needed to send about 10 resumes to get one callback; those with African-American names needed to send around 15 resumes to get one callback” (Francis 1). This may not seem like a big deal, what’s five more applications? Right? Think of it this way, if someone has to send five more applications for a single call back, what happens if they don’t get the job? Now, the additional applications rise to ten instead of five. Ten applications is one-third the amount of applications a white applicant has to send. These inequalities do not only exist during the application process, they also arise in the payment of each employee “And it gets worse the higher up the pay scale you go,” Jeff Nesbitt, employee of US News, wrote, “for every...

Racial Profiling Persuasive Essay

...Many people have their own opinions about racial profiling but not everyone can relate realistically to it. When we are children, we are taught to not judge a book by its over but this is easier said than done. Racial profiling is the prejudiced practice by law enforcement officers and people or the use of an individual’s race, national origin and ethnicity as a belief of crime or committing an offense. Criminal profiling, mostly, as practiced by law officers, is the dependence on a type of character traits they believe to be related with felonies. Racial profiling has been a very serious issue over these past years. Identifying unlawful activities by using the practice of race as a means of profiling has been used in so many ways including...

Congratulations, welcome to the club, Attorney Blake.” “Thank you, Sage. I couldn’t have done it without you.” “Nonsense. It was all you. The ink isn’t even dry on your law license and already you’ve been handed one of the most important cases in Virginia. You better get ready; the progressives you’re up against are pit bulls. They’ll be backed by the full weight of the Office of Civil Rights. You win this one, and you’re going to cut the heart out of Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act.” “I’ll be ready.” “I know you will,” Sage said. “You earned this, William. Your policy work in this area is already the stuff of legend. Remember to consult with the media relations people on this. The plaintiffs are already out there pulling at the old bleeding heartstrings, there’s a big editorial coming out in the Sunday Richmond-Times Dispatch. Our connections at the Dispatch got us an advance copy, I'm emailing it to you now. The response team is on it. They have some PR countermeasures in the works. We want you to stay focused on the legal arguments, but let the PR folks know what you’re up to so they can coordinate the message.” “Will do.” “Excellent. Congratulations, William. Barry Graham's Argument Against Racial Profiling

...The first section of the U.S. Constitution’s Fourteen Amendment states that no State may “deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” Racial profiling, on the other hand, is often defined as law enforcement activities that are operated solely on the basis of race. The unethical and unlawful practice of racial profiling, results in police officers unjustly using an individual’s race or ethnicity as a reason to excessively stop minorities. In a traffic report conducted on the national level for the year 2005, the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) reveals that “Black drivers (4.5%) were twice as likely as White drivers (2.1%) to be arrested during a traffic stop, while Hispanic drivers (65%) were more likely than White (56.2%) to receive a ticket” (Channin par. 6). The statistics provided by the BJS demonstrate that police actions during street stops were not uniform across racial and ethnic groups. African-American and Hispanic drivers seemed to have a higher likelihood of being pulled over than that of the Whites at the national level. Another article that shows how people of color are the target of racial profiling is “Police Deny Accusations of Racial Profiling with White Teen, Black Dancers” by Ruth Manuel-Logan. In this column, Manuel-Logan describes a recent incident when Houston police stopped and handcuffed...

...that minorities are over-represented, primarily because of racial prejudices within the system. The well-publicized war on drugs is one of the main causes for this over-representation, for it has primarily targeted poor people of color. As Walker et al (2003) note, despite repeated studies showing there is little difference in the level of drug use between blacks and whites in the United States, three-quarters of the people incarcerated in American prisons for drug trafficking, dealing, or abuse are African-American. In social terms, one of the most troubling problems with America’s war on drugs is that it appears to be motivated at least in part by racism. As Mason (2000) notes, under New Jersey’s Operation Pipeline drug interdiction program, for example, eighty percent of the motorists stopped by police were black and just thirteen percent were white. Sentencing laws also appear to be racist, for they punish minorities more. Getting caught with four-hundred grams of cocaine requires no mandatory prison term, but possessing four-hundred grams of crack can lead to life in prison. One of the most blatant demonstrations of prejudice in the criminal justice system is racial profiling. According to critics, racial profiling is a unfair law enforcement strategy that enables police officers to stop and question African-Americans simply because of their race. According to Malley (2000) racial profiling is a process often employed by police, both officially and...

The Definition Of Racial Profiling

...Racial profiling has been noticed all over the world and the definition of racial profiling is basically how someone act different. By stereotyping another person because of their race and their ethnic. And racial profiling ties into interest groups and also the iron triangles. So this is basically what this essay is going to be about. Racial profiling is a serious thing to do like for an example. There was a 36 year old Ohio women that got attacked, strip searched, jailed for a couple of hours because of her ethnic background (Warikoo, 2013). In this situation this is defiantly racial profiling because nobody should be punished or mistreated because of the way they look. But a lot of people don’t see mistreating people because of the way...

The Patriot Act; Agree of Disagree

...and punish terrorist acts here in the United States as well as around the world, to help law officers, and to strengthen U.S. measures. Three essays have been studied on this subject, (U.S. Patriot Act – Damian Coles, and The Patriot Act: Wise beyond Its Years – John Ashcroft, and Cassady Pitt - U.S. Patriot Act and Racial profiling: Are there consequences of discrimination?) to come up with this critical argument essay. There are advantages and disadvantages of the Patriot Act. Although The Bill of Rights gives us privacy that could be invaded, is effectual for our country because this helps law enforcement have more resources and more freedom to help. Here are two disadvantages of the Patriot Act to be discussed. First racial profiling and, second America’s right to privacy under the Bill of Rights. When someone is considered a criminal or terrorist just because of how they dress, look, or the religion they practice, this is racial profiling. Racial profiling was a problem in the United States even before 9/11 and the Patriot act. During WWI Japanese Americans were put into camps even if they had never lived in Japan and were born in the United States. Because of 9/11 and the terrorist attacks it has been brought back to the front of our minds; this does not mean that the Patriot Act is a bad thing. We had racial profiling before and will continue to have it because at some time or another people will be looked at...

Social Justice and Equality: Racial Profiling

...Social Justice and Equality: Racial Profiling Galina Shlikht, Nicole Gordon and Becky Overstreet City University of Seattle Author’s Note Galina Shilkht, Student, City University Nicole Gordon, Student, City University Becky Overstreet, Student, City University Social Justice and Equality Team Outline (All) Conflict and Solutions 1. Faulty communication Sometimes criticism can be given inappropriately. This can result in hurting the feelings of group members leaving them feeling devalued. When this happens, we as a team believe the first thing that must be done is to be honest and let the group know how you feel. So we must acknowledge the conflict. The next appropriate step would be to discuss the conflict with all of the team members. After this, we should try and understand the situation and reach an agreement. One of the agreements could be that criticism be given appropriately and constructively. 2. Time management With work, kids, and living in different time zones it can be a challenge to find the time that works best for the three of us to discuss the details, questions, and/or concerns about our essay together. Our solution to this is to set up exact times and day, sort of like an online appointment, for when the three of us can be available via Facebook group message. 3. Personality clashes We all have our own way of doing things. Our styles of working might be different and sometimes this can cause a conflict with each other...
