...Running head: THE GREAT GATSBY ESSAY #2 1 The Great Gatsby Essay #2 Logan Daniel Laabs Madonna University English 3020: Major American Writers (Tuesdays) THE GREAT GATSBY ESSAY #2 2 The Great Gatsby Essay #2 The Great Gatsby takes place over the summer of 1922 and is set in the area around Long Island, New York. At first glance Fitzgerald makes a superficial statement about romanticism; Gatsby’s love for Daisy and how that love was destroyed in 1919 when Gatsby left for the war and instead married Tom Buchanan. The better part of the story shows Fitzgerald’s real theme, the decline of the American Dream in the 1920s during a time when prosperity and material excess was at an all high. Fitzgerald renders the 1920s as a time for low social and moral values which is demonstrated by the greed, pessimism, and need to ascend to power. An example of this is the large parties that Gatsby throws every Saturday night in order to impress others. The American dream seems to fade away with the need for wealth and pleasure dominating more moral objectives. This seemed to only intensify after World War I when young Americans came back home after witnessing brutal carnage. Another factor that lead Americans to desire wealth was the rise in stock market, which could have lead many people to easily acquire a small fortune themselves. Furthermore, crime was at an all-time high due to the flourishing underworld were bootleg liquor was in massive demand by the rich...

Great Gatsby

...The Great Gatsby Essay On the outside, The Great Gatsby seems to be a story about a twisted love affair. Fitzgerald is showing the many changes happening during the 1920’s society, and how it affected the idea of the American dream. Fitzgerald shows the strive for the wealth, which defined the American dream in the 1920’s and which continues to defines as a desire for wealth and success today. In the book, The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is showing the corruption of the American dream by throwing parties, making love and having money. After WWII, there was an economic boom which left people suddenly rich, and they were referred to as the “new money.” There quickly became a difference between the “new money” and the people who were previously wealthy. What used to “pursuit of happiness” is now the pursuit of money and greed. The “new money” people don’t like the “old money” people. Jay Gatsby throws parties throughout the summer to show of how much money he has. “There was music from my neighbor’s house through the summer night.” ( ) This quote shows that Gatsby has a lot of money because he can afford to throw parties throughout the summer. Money is everything in the world today and it was a huge part in the world back in the 1920’s economy too. The Great Gatsby also symbolizes love throughout the story. There were love affairs between married couples and single people. The biggest affair out of all the characters was definitely Daisy and Gatsby. Jay Gatsby has the biggest...

The Great Gatsby

...the rich and ugly collide together, making The Great Gatsby a novel with a twisted and complicated plot. The main character Nick Carraway, is from the west and moves to the overpopulated city of New York. He settles in the “West Egg” of Long Island and meets his mysterious neighbor who goes by the name of Jay Gatsby. Nick visits his cousin Daisy, who lives in the “East Egg” and soon becomes somewhat engaged within the fast, upbeat, party life. (Fitzgerald) Although he is not fully involved, he disentangles himself from the whole scene near the ending due to his observant behavior and disgusted attitude towards the whole outlook. However, his attraction towards Gatsby is a main focus. Readers are captivated by Gatsby’s admirable perseverance and determination in working towards achieving his goal of winning Daisy’s heart and beyond that, the American dream, yet his greatness predicts his downfall. Gatsby’s desire of becoming wealthy and dedication to this goal reflects how admirable he is because created himself out of nothing; he “sprang from his Platonic conception of himself; he was a son of God-.” (Fitzgerald, 104) He “reinvented” himself, using his imagination and being “faithful to the end” until he was the prosperous man he wanted to become. But this accomplished goal of becoming wealthy was only a small step towards his bigger goal; being with Daisy. Money was only a factor that connected Gatsby to Daisy; if Gatsby was wealthy then surely Daisy would be with him...

The Great Gatsby American Dream Failure

...Great Gatsby Essay Throughout the history of the United States, people have dreamed of bettering their lives here. Each person’s American Dream varies, but everyone hopes to come here and get a job, make a lot of money, secure a place in higher society for themselves and possibly a family or partner. The story of The Great Gatsby argues for the idea that the American Dream is unattainable. Fitzgerald shows this idea through the use of Gatsby, Daisy and Wilson as they all struggle towards their dreams and fail. With the death of Gatsby and Wilson, the American dream also dies. As a young boy, Gatsby exemplifies the American Dreamer. He starts young and works hard to improve himself. This is seen in his “Schedule” and “General Resolves” (Fitzgerald 173). When he was...

English Great Gatsby

...English Essay: Great Gatsby “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, Just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the same advantages that you’ve had.” This quote states that everyone has not been able to love an easy, non-troubled life. The rich get things handed to them easily and quick without them even having to work for it. While the less fortunate have to fight for these same things. This quotation shows how Scott Fitzgerald really felt about the American Dream. He was able to show how the American Dream was a failure in this whole book. There are three examples showing how the American Dream is a failure through the George Wilson, The Buchannas, and Jay Gatsby. Scott Fitzgerald uses George Wilson to show that the American Dream is a failure and not true. He is the one character in the book you can see this through because he is a hardworking man, responsible and as well truthful yet he is poor. We know from reading this book that George Wilson has been working all his life in the Valley of Ashes, but has still continued to be nothing more than determined to reach the success of the wealthy. All of his acts of hard work should be leading him to the richness and success of the wealthy instead of it all going to the wrong characters in the book. George Wilson shows that he is responsible and mature through the entire book especially when he finds out his wife, Myrtle Wilson has been cheating on him. He knows that the city has done this to her and he...

Essay on “the Great Gatsby”

...Essay on “The Great Gatsby” by Francis Scott Fitzgerald The book ”The Great Gatsby” written by Francis Scott Fitzgerald, processes lots of different themes. One of those themes is the so-called “American dream”, a dream of success. One of the main characters, Jay Gatsby, you could say is living this dream. His life is extravagant and filled with all the material goods money can buy, Yes Jay Gatsby has it all, or does he? All of this is seen from our narrator’s point of view Nick Carraway, who also along with Gatsby is one of the main characters. In my essay on ”The Great Gatsby” I have chosen to keep my focus on chapter 3, the chapter takes place at Nick Carraway’s first party at Jay Gatsby’s Place. As mentioned earlier the narrator of the book is Nick Carraway, with a 1st person limited point of view, so we hear every thought Nick Carraway has “I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby’s house …”. The fact that we hear every thought Carraway has helps us relate and understand the way he acts. Negatively 1st person narrative is unreliable to the reader, because we only se the situation from one point of view. It’s also a disadvantage because the main character isn’t aware of all events. And therefore as a reader we are very eager to hear what’s going on and what the other characters are thinking. In the book there is also use of direct Talk between the Reader and the narrator “Reading over what I have written so far, I see that I have …”. Because of this we get...

How Does Daisy Change In The Great Gatsby

...My perception of the character Gatsby changed, because of love, determination, and the emptiness he had in himself. This novel is combined with a tragic, and passionate love through which Gatsby falls in love with Daisy. Gatsby has to go to war. Suffering, tests the romantic love story of these two. The novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a tragic love story of lost love. Gatsby, the main character based his love for Daisy, a young girl he met before going off to war. In their time apart, Gatsby attempted to build the American dream while Daisy enjoyed the riches by those who adored her. The character Daisy is described by Fitzgerald throughout the novel as flighty and shallow. It is their difference in character and devotion...

The Great Gatsby Essay

...Tyler Landry Mrs. Potter American Studies, English July 22, 2015 The Great Gatsby Essay Just after the World War 1, in the US there had been huge changes that involved all aspects of American life, including a tendency towards materialism, changes in clothing, women getting the right to vote gangster life emerging, parties and dances, and most importantly the American Dream. Fitzgerald’s novel define that American dream changed by time; the first time for European living in America was American dream, and originally any discovery which gave them happiness was American dream, but in the ear of 20s mean for American dream has become perverted into desire for wealth by whatever means; thinking that money will bring happiness. The Great Gatsby, was published in this era; therefore; it gives us a vivid portrayal of that time by demonstrating symbols and character behavior the impossibility of American dream. The characters that Fitzgerald describes in his novel all tie in with many aspect of the 1920s lifestyle. The Jazz Age was a tendency toward materialism, and characters are described in the way that shows materialistic tendency. Callahan says “Critics from several different generations have noted how Fitzgerald used his conflicts to explore the origins and fate of the American dream and the related idea of the nation.” (Callahan). Fitzgerald describes Gatsby, the main character in the novel, as a dream achiever, who is looking for wealth and property even...

The Great Gatsby Essay

...The Great Gatsby Essay In the novel, The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald shows the change in people’s morals during the 1920’s era. It also shows the how society corrupts the “American Dream” and alters it to what it should be like. He shows this in his characters like Daisy, a materialistic woman who cannot live without attention and Tom, a reluctant jerk who lets his riches and ego get the best of him. Daisy and her fiancé Tom are about to get married. While there relationship is going on, Gatsby reunites with Daisy and tries to convince her to leave Tom for him. Daisy ends up staying with Tom because he can provide the things she needs. This shows that back in the 1920’s era people did not marry for love but only for riches. It showed the rich as dominate over the poor. It also showed the altercation of what the “American Dream” should be rather than what it really was. He also shows this corruption in Gatsby as well. Gatsby’s “American Dream” was Daisy. Gatsby’s death can be used as a symbol for the death of the “American Dream”. Gatsby spends his whole life chasing after his “American Dream” he forgets about everything around him. He changes himself completely only to try and achieve this “American Dream”. When Daisy decides to stay with Tom this ends Gatsby’s “American Dream” and coincidently, Gatsby’s life. This shows how people back in the 1920’s would alter their life style in order to achieve the idea of this typical “American Dream”. No matter what the dream was...
