The Battle of Vicksburg was a fierce and hard fought battle. Many people were killed in this battle. The Confederate had an estimated 3,300 casualties and 29,500 surrendered. The Union had an estimated 4,800 casualties during this bloody fight. This war lasted for a good while. It went from May 18, 1863, to July 4, 1863. The generals of this battle were John C. Pemberton for the Confederate and Ulysses S. Grant for the Union. These people were highly qualified and good at what they did. This battle was one of the most important for the Union. They needed this for their plan to move forward. During the Battle of Vicksburg, also called the Siege of Vicksburg, the Union was trying to gain control of Vicksburg because it was the last major …show more content…
The Union had supplies coming straight to them. The Confederate were way outnumbered and there was nothing that they could do. They had survived a while without supplies. On July 4, 1863, the Confederate finally surrendered the city. This was a turning point of the war for the Union. They really needed this win. The Confederate had about 29,500 people surrender during this fight. They also lost loads of weapons during this. The Union had done it, they captured one of the most valuable points the Confederate had. This gave the Union a lot of momentum. This was part of their plan to win the war. They wanted to cut off the Mississippi River. Even though the war went on after this, the Confederate really didn’t have a chance to win anymore. Grant did a good job at this battle. His strategy led the Union to a victory over a really well-defended city. He did make some bad calls though. He caused a lot of people to die by sending them straight at the fort. The Confederate easily defended this and caused the Union heavy casualties. Overall though, he did a great job. He wanted the defeat to deflate the morale of the Confederate

Compare And Contrast Grant Vs Pemberton

...Grant vs Pemberton Essay The seemingly average general conquered the well known general in what seemed to be an underdog victory. The Commonlit article, “The Siege of Vicksburg: A Tale of Two Generals,” by Mike Kubic, describes why the battle between opposing generals John Pemberton and Ulysses S. Grant may not have been an underdog victory. The article describes each general’s past, uprising, and the battle between them. Grant and Pemberton both attended West Point Military Academy and during their time there, they both nearly flunked out because of their drinking problems. Pemberton however, easily rose ranks in the military while Grant struggled to be noticed by military officers. Grant and Pemberton had very similar early military carriers...

Take a Stand: War

...Take A Stand: War Samuel A. Olivas Grand Canyon University: CWV-301 June 13, 2015 Where would America be if brave men and women didn’t sacrifice themselves in the greatest wars known to date? This is a huge question a lot of people do not ask themselves. A debate resides today whether war is right or wrong. I take my stand for war. Freedom seems to have lost its importance among the citizens of the United States. Many individuals or groups look at war and only see death, but its what they don’t see that makes the biggest impact and that’s the purpose. A man or woman who has served their country gets ready for battle not for their family, but for the cause. The purpose of this paper is written to inform about major wars taken place in the bible, history, and currently. Firstly, I will explain how War in the bible relates to war in the past. Secondly, I will explain the history of two wars and their significance. Lastly, I will explain the war we currently are in and why it’s crucial that we never give up. A man just laid down his life for you, would you for someone else? WAR: THE BIBLE The Bible has many wars through the Old Testament; we must take a closer look at Egypt vs. Israel. In Egypt Pharaoh had the people of Israel under his control. The Israelites were beaten, whipped, and killed. They were put to work on the Egyptian city. This bondage was held for years until a man named Moses stepped in for God. Moses states in Exodus 5:1, “ let his people go”. In Egypt...

General Sherman

...of the war. General William Tecumseh Sherman’s march through Georgia to the sea was a brilliant strategic victory for the North that helped to end the war more quickly, all while preserving the lives of soldiers on both the North and South. All though his march was outside the general practice of warfare it is clear that the General’s movement through Georgia was the best course he could have taken given his circumstances. His capture of Atlanta and his subsequent march to follow is one of the most controversial issues of the war. At the time of the war it was commonplace for the military leaders to embed their troops in entrenchments that were nearly impossible to infiltrate. They would then rush their men towards each other in a bloody battle. General Sherman realized that attacking the entrenchments of the enemy was fruitless and killed too many soldiers. He went on a path of flanking maneuvers that helped get around these entrenched soldiers. He followed up this plan by attacking the economy of the South and breaking their resolve. The importance of his new plan can be seen on how his tactics of attacking the land and economy, instead of other human beings, and avoiding head-on confrontation actually saved lives for both the Union and Confederate armies. The march from Atlanta to Savannah has taken on a life of its own for historians today. The campaign’s impact has been over-emphasized by his contemporaries on both sides of the war creating a war hero or war tyrant depending...

...this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are...

Nelson, 1979 The Migration of the Indians to the New World. It is believed that the people who Columbus saw when he came to the New World were nomadic hunters from central and East Asia who followed the buffalo and deer. When the herds moved, people moved after them because they were dependent on the animals for food. It is therefore suspected that the herds led the people out of Asia by the north-east, across the Bering Strait and into North America. They crossed the sea by an ice –bridge when it was frozen over during the last Ice-Age. They did not know that they were crossing water from one continent to another. Map 1 Amerindians migration from central Asia into North America. The Amerindians settled throughout North America and were the ancestors of the many Red Indian tribes we know today, as well as the Eskimos in the far north. In general, they were nomadic but some followed settled agricultural pursuits and developed civilizations of their own like the Mayas in South America (check internet reference for profile on this group, focus on...
