...Nurture Throughout Jeannette Walls memoir “The Glass Castle” a recurring theme of nature vs nurture is seen by the way the kids act. While the older kids (Lori, Jeannette, Brian) had to survive on their own and struggle, nature, while the youngest (Maureen) always had someone taking care of her. At the end of this memoir the eldest kids end up being successful while the youngest doesn’t, this is because she never had to go through the same struggle to survive and to thrive like her older siblings. The differences started at the very beginning when they were in the desert. “I was on fire. It’s my earliest memory. I was three years old... I was wearing the dress to cook hot dogs...”. This shows us that even at the young age of three Jeannette was very independant. While she was set on fire at the age of three Maureen was getting special treatment. “Maureen was five years younger than Brian, and Mom said...she needed special treatment”. This shows that from the start her parents were nurturing her while the older ones were having to cook their own food at the age of three....

...10CP, Period 2 26 November 2012 Adversity Essay Trials often test the measurement of a person’s strength of character. In the story, My Left Foot, Christy Brown’s disability is overwhelming; however, he perseveres with his limitations until he is able to write with the one limb that he has control of – his foot. Jonathan, in the story “Civil Peace,” learns that in order to live a life of contentment after losses that occur to his family during war, he must learn to accept the fate God allows. Jeannette Walls, in The Glass Castle, also learns that her salvation in life comes from acceptance of both her parents and her past. Resilience is a quality that can be modeled, but most people gain this trait from enduring and overcoming the hardships that they face in order to survive and ultimately, thrive. ...Scheller Engl 1302-7 5 December 2017 The Glass Castle Essay In the book the Glass Castle there were several things that were brought to light that i had never known about or thought about. Although this book was a roller coaster of emotions it is definitely one of my favorites. One thing that really stood out to me was, when Jeanette's mom was continuously selfish throughout the novel. When “Bryan yanked the covers back. Lying next to Mom was a huge family-sized Hershey chocolate bars”(Walls, 174). This just struck me the fact she would hide and eat a candy bar when her kids had nothing to eat or when she had expensive jewelry and land worth loads of money and chose not to sell any of it this causing malnourishment of her...

...The glass castle revision essay Valerie Feldman In the book, “The Glass Castle” by Jeannette walls, her memoir shows the family and their experiences of the life on the move. Jeannette’s frame of mind is described clearly through the book, the many ups and downs As the walls left phoenix, Jeannette felt a sense of disatachments. Although Jeannette felt completely different when they arrive in phoenix. When they arrive Jeannette is astonished by the house itself and the atmosphere around it.” The backyard had orange trees that grew real oranges.”(pg 94) the “highlighted” word in the moment is real, this word represents the surrounded meaning of possibility, new adventures and opening horizons. Jeannette’s father, rex, repeatedly threw her into...

...In The Glass Castle Jeannette Walls Is embarrassed of the way her mother acts. Walls argues that despite this humiliating act, her mother deserves respect. This essay will examine whether Jeannette Walls succeeded in persuading the reader to not judge unique people. One way an author affects his or her audience is through their carefully selected choice of diction. Walls uses formal (elevated) phrases such as “I was overcome with panic” this helps persuade to not judge unique people, because she sounds smart and smart people are trusted. Another tactic authors deploy in their writing is a varied use of syntax. Whenever Walls wants to emphasize a main idea,She uses a long sentence such as,To the people walking by she probably looked like any...

...reading Jeannette Walls’ memoir, “The Glass Castle”, it became clear that there were many repetitive factors that shaped the Walls family’s lives. There are numerous accounts of sexual abuse, parental alcoholism, evidence of mental illness and finally poverty in the form of homelessness. For even when the children prospered the parents choose to be homeless. The question is, are these factors relative? Can it be that childhood sexual abuse can inflict mental illness or alcoholism in adulthood? Does mental illness and alcoholism affect the chances of being homeless? The focus of this essay is to provide evidence that the events in Walls own life, documented in her memoir, have a butterfly effect in the outcome of their parent’s lives. In Her memoir Walls documents several cases of sexual abuse during her and her sibling’s childhood. She writes of her own experiences with Billy Deel, although he is only a minor as well, he sexually assaults her during a game of hide and seek. PAGE 85-87 Afterward Jeanette was reluctant to tell her father, “I had a feeling it would cause problems” (Walls 87) The second assault Walls documents, was when she was nine years old. “I was awakened by someone running his hands over my private parts.” “‘I just want to play a game with you’ a man’s voice said.” The next day when they told their father, “he said he was going to kill that low life…” Although, no serious action was taken to find him or prevent it from happening again. (Walls 103) The...

...middle class lifestyle as an adult; she really wants to help her parents out. They do not seem to want the help though and her mother will ask for ridiculous requests that she ultimately does not need! Why did she keep talking to her parents even though she does not want anyone to know who her parents are as she hides from them all the time out of embarrassment? This is what the plan is to discuss in my essay on the Glass Castle. I will talk about how Jeanette moved out of poverty from the hands of her two abusive parents, and how she feels about her parents current socioeconomic situation! Jeannette constantly had to move around in different small rural towns, located in the boonies of Nevada and a few other desert states. This would affect most children in a lot of ways; first you can have many mental health defects that will start to drain on a child’s overall mental and psychiatric...
