Reflection on the Essay’s Effectiveness
Overall, the essay on Agatha Christie has distinctive argument and points, however, it has some significant errors to be fixed. The introduction paragraph resembles triangle standing format such as it starts with general idea and ends with specific idea, thesis. In addition, the thesis statement is specific and clear but the repetition of 'strong' eventually makes the thesis seems weak.
Even though the body paragraphs start with strong sub argument, some of the concluding sentence and supporting details are irrelevant. For example, the concluding sentence for first body paragraph which talking about ‘social issue’ is not related to ‘strong characters.’ Moreover, the examples in the first body paragraph are the list of the characters, which do not directly support the sub thesis: adding direct quotation from the resource and elaborating could be more supportive. In addition, between each supporting example, there can be transition cue that reinforces the main argument of the essay. In the third body paragraph, while the detail about Christie's personal experience is relevant, somehow, it needs to be interacted with the argument by mentioning the specific text that she wrote after Christie’s first marriage. Nonetheless, there is a crucial mistake in the author’s supporting details which is “Christie uses the time period of the 60’s, the novels do not quite ring true,” opposing the author’s thesis statement.
The conclusion paragraph also has effective structure that goes form specific to general ideas. It begins with restating the author’s thesis statement. After that, the author builds up with sub-arguments and important ideas. However, “in practically any bookshop, airport newsstand or train station, it is possible to by a Christie novel” should be omitted since it is unsuitable. Furthermore, the last sentence tells the message to readers that the novel gives comfort to readers in uncertain time. Lastly, the essay has distinctive argument and point and potential to be a formal essay after corrections.
