A significant part of the MMS experience will be honing your ability to work effectively with a diverse team while teaching you how to hold leadership roles both in and out of the classroom. In a professional, volunteer, or academic setting, describe how you overcame a challenging situation within a team. What role did you play? What was the result? What did you learn about yourself?
Diversity, be it in terms of cultural or the thought process, is very much important because it invariably leads to generation of new ideas. While working in a group, even if it is culturally united, there are times when we witness diversities in ideas, suggestions and the processes followed to accomplish the tasks. I have experienced this many a times while working as a team leader on various academic projects and group assignments. It becomes all the more difficult when it comes to co-ordinating any event as a team leader.
I remember the time when Indian IT czar, Infosys had partnered with our college and faculties to train few of our college students for Infosys soft skills programme. The programme mainly included activities from various modules viz. Business Communication Skills, Intrapersonal & Interpersonal Relationship Skills, Group Discussion, Interviews and Presentation Skills, Entrepreneurial Skills Development; and a Campus to Company module. It was a surprise for me when I was elected as a group leader of our team of twelve students by Infosys and head of humanities department of our college. Honestly, I was reluctant to perform that role because the programme was too long, and I had a perception that it is nearly impossible for me to manage the group and perform various activities rightly on time. Thirty-one semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore biomedical scientists’ receptiveness toward the social sciences in general and to qualitative research in particular. We found that these respondents exhibited a predominantly negative posture toward the social sciences; however, we also found considerable variation in their judgments and explanations.
