What are the four main purposes of technical writing? The four main purposes of technical writing are: to inform, instruct, reference, and to persuade. The purpose of informing writing is to inform the reader. There are three questions a writer should ask. (1) Why am I writing? (2) What do I want readers to know? (3) What do I want readers to do? It should provide information for the target audience. When a writer writes he or she aims to provide information which is beneficial to the reader. There are several sources which covers informative writing. These sources are magazines, newspaper articles, and text books. Informative writing presents facts. The purpose of informative writing is to tell the reader something. This can be about facts or technology. The facts are written in order with the most important fact first and the least important last.
The purpose of instructive writing is to instruct the reader to do something. This type of information should be short and to the point. It should be written as a numbered list. This will help the reader to recognize the sequence of the instructions. Instructions are usually found with new equipment purchased which requires instructions on how to assembly the equipment. In some cases pictures and diagrams are also included to give the reader a visual of how the equipment should look when it is completed. Instructions can also be symbols.
The purpose of reference is go give credit to another authors’ work. It should provide a quick guide of explanation. The reader should not have to read the entire text. References also refer to research done in a scientific paper.
The purpose of persuasive writing is to motivate, or to persuade the reader to agree with an
