The legal environment of Jones Homes in the mid 90s was that of a Sole Proprietor. Mr. Jones owned and was the head of the operation; he hired me in the capacity of Bookkeeper and Project Manager. Circa thirteen years ago the company was redesigned into a Domestic Corporation, according to Bizpedia.com (2011 – 2012). As a sole proprietor, Mr. Jones had the freedom to be his own boss; the business was easy to form and required minimal funding to start. The disadvantages included being personally liable for all debts of the business and it was more difficult to borrow money for start-up costs and expansions. With an excellent credit rating, intelligent prior land purchases and quality product production, he was able to overcome these obstacles. Reorganizing the operation in later years as a corporation limited the liability feature and would enable the business continuity; the business could survive after his ownership. The regulations that the sole proprietorship was subject to, within the building industry, were enormous, after incorporation they would have become mammoth and the issue of double taxation would come into existence. The social environment entailed the differences in our client base. A vast chasm existed in the customers for which we built custom homes, in many different aspects. The location of the land on which our projects dwelt was indicative of the economic level of the buyer, the size of the structure and amenities therein were another indicator. The cultural background of each contract originator became evident and necessitated particular attention to detail for each home we built and each dream we made into a reality.
