Coming-of-age in novels is known as the psychological development of the protagonist in a story and is sometimes also called a bildungsroman. As time progresses, you might see a change or transformation of personality in a certain character. This can be because of particular events that occur in that characters life that causes them to think or act differently. The protagonist learns much from their growth and gains knowledge from the world around him or her. Esther is immature and looks for a sign to tell her where her future resides. She pursues a useless degree where she cannot obtain a job and she is basically going nowhere in life. Esther is surrounded friends and accompanied by people who make here uncomfortable and has to deal with the peer pressure. In a coming-of-age story, there comes a difficulty that the protagonist has to overcome and in Esther’s case, it is finding a job. After graduating from university, she finds that she doesn’t have a choice but to become a babysitter, a job that her mother chose for her. Esther goes on to care for the baby, May, and her mother as her mother goes through the sorrow for the loss of her son. At the same time, she falls for May’s father and another boy as well. This is where Esther’s characters develops and matures as she learns about herself and the troubled environment that surrounds here.
