Discrimination Worksheet

Write a 100- to 200-word response to each of the following questions. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

* What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?

Discrimination is the act or behavior of treating someone poorly due to their race, religion, creed, gender, sexual orientation or age. Discrimination is different from prejudice because if you are being prejudice than you have a misconception about a certain of people. An example would be that you do not trust people from Russia because they were raised different that us. Stereotyping is different from both discrimination and prejudice because when you are stereotyping it is more broad and not pinpointed as much. An example would be "Most Mexican people have poor health because they eat lard with all the foods that they prepare."

* What are the causes of discrimination?

I believe that the cause of discrimination stems from how a person was raised. If someone was brought up around people that were prejudice towards a certain group then it would be considered a normal and accepted practice. That means later in life you would be more likely to repeat the cycle unless you were corrected and taught that what you were doing and the thought process that you had towards that group of people was wrong then you would not change. I feel that for some people discrimination of others is a core belief and that person feels that this is the only way to act.

* How is discrimination faced by one identity group (race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability) the same as discrimination faced by another? How are they different?
