As an African American student there were always classes in which we were taught about our history, how we came to this country as slaves, etc. But never did the question come up about whether or not we were colonials or immigrants. In the United States, slavery was formed from using people whom were forced to serve as slaves by capturing and sold at auctions. They were then forced to work on plantations as a slave labor which existed as a legal institution in North America. Slavery existed more than a century before the founding of the United States in 1776. In 1865, following the American Civil War, slavery was outlawed in the United States and slaves became emancipated or freeman. The first English colony in North America, Jamestown, acquired its first African slaves in 1619 by the Dutch. Slavery was a one of the key factors which contributed to the American Civil War which lasted from 1861 to 1865. Once slaves became freeman, many states developed laws which were created to disenfranchise African-American’s from voting. A group of African-American women decided to establish the first national black organization in the United States. From the time of slavery, children were bought and sold into slavery. Many times, white masters and owners would beat and force their enslaved women into having intimate, sexual relationships. The challenges mainly presented themselves as racial inequality or stereotyping. This has been evident as a resident of both communities in New York and Florida. The ways to bridge the racial and cultural gaps are through patience, education and understanding of each others backgrounds and core values. I’m from the island of Barbados where race, color or creed was not an issue; regardless of your geographic location on the island we all ate the same foods, enjoyed the same things and spoke the same language. Those in my neighborhood looked like me but in many different shades, even Caucasians were dark because of the 365 days of sun that lathered the island. Two of my closest friend were white but I didn’t realize this until my first two weeks in America. In Barbados there is no separation of races within the community and there is absolute unity as we all consider ourselves Barbadians. When I moved to New York City in 1983 my community was very different form what I was accustom too. There was a mix of different races and cultures and the neighborhoods were segregated by cultures. Most of us know that St. Louis is called the Gateway to the West, and the Gateway Arch is the tallest man made monument in the world. If you did not know this, then you haven't been reading your History books. St. Louis, Missouri is home to a very diverse population. You can find a mixture of races through out the city if St. Louis. It is not unusual for police to stop minorities, particularly African Americans, for unjustified reasons or merely to ask them why they are driving or walking in a certain neighborhood. In St. Louis, you are discriminated against because of your race, your gender, your age, and even by the type of car you drive. The deeper you go into St. Louis, the worse the discrimination gets. I will say that where I live, there is a small amount of discrimination. Everyone knows each other and we talk to each other, watch everyone's house when they are out of town, walk our dogs together and even have play dates with our kids. There are over 5,911,605 people living in St. Louis, Missouri. Of that number approximately 85% are Caucasian, 11.5% are African American , 0.5% are American Indian and Alaska Native American, 3.2% are Hispanic or Latino American, and 1.5% are of Asian decent.
