What are the positive aspects of stereotypes, if any?

Stereotypes can have a positive aspects if looked at in the context of if a hipster friend offers to take you to a party but you decline because of the stereotype that most hipsters smoke illegal substances and this could end up keeping you out of that situation or help prevent you from going down that path by trying a gateway drug.
