An Engineer’s Dream Deferred Everyone aspires to be something greater, in life. This is no different for Ethan Frome. Like many, Ethan Frome had dreams and aspirations throughout the entire story. In some instances reality may step in between you and those dreams and remind you that you, in fact, are dreaming. Ethan Frome knows this all too well as he had to abandon his dreams because his reality made it clear he had no room to pursue them. So, what happens to a dream deferred? In the poem, Hughes writes, “does it dry up, like a raisin in the sun” (Hughes 2-3). A raisin, before it became dried started off as a big and full grape. This is similar to Ethan’s dreams of becoming an Engineer. When Ethan was thinking of the possibilities for the future, his dreams were big and full just as the grape. This all changed when his parents died and Zeena became ill. Ethan’s responsibility outweighed his dreams and his dreams became miniscule, just like “a raisin in the sun.” These same lines in the poem can be argued with Ethan’s dreams of being with …show more content…
This line closely represents Frome’s dreams because they do infact “stink like rotten meat.” Similarly to the smell rotten meat, Frome’s dreams constantly linger and remind him of what could have been. In the novel the author states “Ethan's love of nature did not take the form of a taste for agriculture” (Wharton, 62). This tells us Ethan had no intention of taking over the family farm, but reality strikes again. With the death of his father and his wife’s illness he had no choice but to take over the farm.
