Ethics Case Study Healthcare professionals are faced with ethical dilemmas and issues on a regular basis especially in the emergency department. The purpose of this paper is to identify ethical issues within a case study. This case study involves an eight month old infant who presents to the emergency department with injuries. After arriving at the emergency department it is noted that the infant has bilateral fractured femurs. The ethical issue identified within this case study is the possibility of child abuse by either the mother or a worker at the daycare facility. The nurse makes notes of her concerns within the patients chart as well as verbalizes concern to the emergency room physician regarding the injuries to the infant. It appears to be a lack of follow-up with these concerns so this presents an ethical issue. There are eight ethical principles that a nurse should learn to apply to each situation that he or she feels there is an ethical decision that needs to be made. The eight principles to apply are autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, veracity, fidelity, justice, paternalism, and respect for others (Guido, 2010). Within the nursing field advocacy plays a critical role in keeping the patients safe throughout their encounters with the health care system (Beyea, 2005). One of the conflicts noted in the situation listed is, more research should have been conducted to investigate the cause of the injuries in more detail. Personal values and ethical principles should guide one to do a more extensive investigation into any questionable situation. In this particular case study outside agencies should have been contacted to complete a field investigation into how the infant sustained bilateral femur fractures. It is part of the oath that health care workers take to

Ethics Case Study

...Ethics Study Case Victoria Wilder HCS/335 November 21, 2011 Rhonda Dempsey Jerry McCall is Dr. Williams’ office assistant. He has received professional training as both a medical assistant and a LPN. He is handling all the phone calls while the receptionist is at lunch. A patient calls and says he must have a prescription refill for Valium, an antidepressant medication, called in right away to his pharmacy, since he is leaving for the airport in thirty minutes. He says that Dr. Williams is a personal friend and always gives him a small supply of Valium when he has to fly. No one except Jerry is in the office at this time. Jerry is faced with a dilemma that is common but illegal in the field of healthcare. Jerry does have professional training as a medical assistant and an LPN, but there are four different kinds of medical assistants. Clerical, administrative, clinical, and specialized medical assistants and depending on which one Jerry has training in, there is one that will qualify him to call in medical prescriptions. Clinical medical assistants can call in prescriptions to pharmacies but it depends on the specific laws of the state, but even though Jerry has received training, he is still the office assistant. The patient that has called in is a personal friend of Dr. Williams and needs Valium before he takes a flight in thirty minutes. Valium is an addictive drug and can sometimes be used as a recreational drug than what it is needed for. As far as Jerry knows, it...

Ethics and Human Resource Case Studies

...Business Ethics Case Study #1 - A Good Team Player Having done well as a staff accountant in the accounts payable section of a major industrial firm for several years since his graduation from college, Steven felt that he had learned much about the “ins” and “outs” of survival in an intensely bureaucratic organization. It is thus not surprising that he was relaxed and unconcerned about his circumstances at the company as he entered the employee lounge to attend the late-afternoon welcoming reception for his new supervisor. The new manager of accounts payable, Kristin, had been transferred to Steven’s division from a similar position in another subsidiary of the company because of her proven talent for organizing and improving the efficiency of operations there. A no-nonsense type of manager, Kristin was experienced and determined to perform her new assignment with the same vigor that had brought her so much success throughout her career. At the reception, Kristin circulated through the room, introducing herself to her new subordinates and asking each of them if they had any suggestions that would help make the payables section a better place to work. When she approached Steven, he told her about something that had been on his mind lately: that people seemed to him to gain promotions and be given opportunities to work overtime based on who liked them, and not on the quality of their work. In reply, Kristin politely stated that she would do everything that she could to...

Levi Strauss & Company Case Study

...LEVI STRAUSS & COMPANY CASE STUDY Cevdet KIZIL Master of Science in Organizational Leadership Program 1- Knowing that its managers are willing to trade off some economic efficiency in order to operate according to their collective view of what is “ethical”, would you buy shares of stock in this company? Why or why not? First of all, I think we are experiencing a paradox in this situation. Because, the company is trading off economic efficiency in order to operate, but it’s a well known fact that economic efficiency is one of the factors which affects the price of stocks. On the other hand, let’s say the company did set economic efficiency as a priority and decided to close some of its plants. This will mean laying off several employees. Thus, the current condition really makes is tough to judge. However, I would still buy shares of stock in this company. Because, company reputation, image and responsibility are also effective factors. Furthermore, I believe that Levi Strauss & Company’s ethical view will help them to win in the long-run. They may experience losses and they may not make profits in a short period, but I think that company’s ethical view will also affect their stock price, profitability and brand in the long run. For example, Margery Kraus, President and CEO of APCO Worldwide also justify my opinions with her words “Play by your own rules and ethics. In the long run it will pay off”. As a result, because of all these reasons, I would buy shares...

Irac Brief

...Lawsuit The IRAC method is an instructional tool that can aid students in the comprehension and evaluation of information so that they can make informed value decisions. It is an acronym for Issue, Rule, Analysis, and Conclusion. Although this is a legal model used to evaluate hypothetical situations in law cases, it is by no means limited to the study of the law. Useful for case studies presented in varied mediums such as narratives, videos/films, or recordings, the IRAC method may be applied to other activities such as defining a term or demonstrating a concept, principle, relationship, analogy, or contrasting idea. Often the instructional focus is on the end result of case study discussion rather than on how to "walk through" a method or approach to be used by the students in the case analysis (Bittner, M.1990). Issue: A recent court ruling should motivate hospital risk managers to conduct a careful periodic review of their facility's procedures and legal obligations when it comes to treating intoxicated patients. The patient, Kevin Kowalski, later wandered onto a nearby highway and was struck by a car, leaving him paralyzed below the neck. Throughout the case, Mr. Kowalski contended that even though he decided on his own to leave the hospital, the hospital should have prevented him from doing so based on his level of inebriation. Analyze: In order to analyze the specific details of our risk management-drunken patient lawsuit, we need to state the facts. In June...
