...Ethics of journalism Main article: Journalism ethics and standards The ethics of journalism is one of the most well-defined branches of media ethics, primarily because it is frequently taught in schools of journalism. Journalistic ethics tends to dominate media ethics, sometimes almost to the exclusion of other areas.[1] Topics covered by journalism ethics include: * News manipulation. News can manipulate and be manipulated. Governments and corporations may attempt to manipulate news media; governments, for example, by censorship, and corporations by share ownership. The methods of manipulation are subtle and many. Manipulation may be voluntary or involuntary. Those being manipulated may not be aware of this. See: news propaganda. Photographers crowd around a starlet at the Cannes Film Festival. * Truth. Truth may conflict with many other values. * Public interest. Revelation of military secrets and other sensitive government information may be contrary to thepublic interest, even if it is true. However, public interest is not a term which is easy to define. * Privacy. Salacious details of the lives of public figures is a central content element in many media. Publication is not necessarily justified simply because the information is true. Privacy is also a right, and one which conflicts with free speech. See: paparazzi. * Fantasy. Fantasy is an element of entertainment, which is a legitimate goal of media content. Journalism may mix fantasy and...

...Facts Luke, an ABC employee, is currently working on a land development project consisting of building an adult entertainment store in a neighborhood where Luke’s brother, Owen, lives. Luke knows that Owen has been considering selling his home but that he is putting it off expecting the real estate market to improve in a few years, yet Luke knows that the project will cause the opposite effect. Issue Luke’s ethical issue is that because of his morals he is unsure of what he should do. He feels that the right thing to do is share information about ABC’s project and how it will reduce the value of the neighborhood homes, including Owen’s. But, he also knows that he is obligated to keep this information confidential until the company decides otherwise. Luke is having a conflict because of his moral ethics. Having the knowledge that when the adult entertainment store gets built his brother’s plans of making a bigger profit off the sale of his house may not happen. At the same time Luke knows that he has to full fill his company confidentiality and that is to say nothing until the company announces it in a month. Analysis I understand Luke’s ethical dilemma. He is torn between the loyalty he has for his brother and the loyalty he has for ABC Company. If Luke tried to apply some ethical theories to his concerns he may be able to make a decision on his own. He could put the utilitarianism theory into practice by asking himself if this “will produce the greatest...

...Introduction Should a person or organization copy music and video DVDs or a profit? While there are definite legal and social reasons which would lead to the answer of “no,” there are also ethical reasons. We have the technology to easily copy music and video onto DVDs but having the ability does not make something ethical. Katz, E (2011) states technology in and of itself can be used to undertake unethical, and even evil endeavors. Many rationalize that from an ethical standpoint, technology is neutral, even if this technology has the potential for unethical uses state often engineers and designers of technology consider ethics as something of a constraint on them. Often, when designing technology is being developed, engineers find themselves being presented with moral/value conflicts. Moral concepts such as security vs. privacy; safety vs. autonomy; accountability vs. confidentially and even individual rights vs. rights of a group are all related to technology. The aforementioned concepts are not only related to designing and manufacturing technologies but they also relate to the use of technology. Taking this into consideration, one can begin to see the ethical issues of using technology for all intent a purposed to pirate music and DVDs. Discussion Anthony, S. (2013) made a case for using technology to copy music and video. According to Anthony, S., copyright law exists to protect an artist through lobbying and legislation. When a consumer purchase a movie or song, he...

...Luke, an employee of ABC Company, has recently been assigned to a project that requires him to take part in the development of an adult entertainment store. Luke came to the Ethics Department for guidance on a personal conflict he is having. He discloses he is having a dilemma with the location of the new retail stores development. His brother, Owen, who he has a close relationship with, lives right around the corner from the proposed location. He knows that once the company goes public with its plans to place an adult entertainment store, so close to his brother’s place of residence that it will cause the value of Owen’s home to drop dramatically. His brother has expressed interest in selling his home and has even received a decent offer, but has not officially made a final decision. Owen feels obligated to keep his company’s confidentiality agreement, but also feels like he needs to inform his brother. ISSUE Luke’s dilemma is if he should inform his brother, Owen, about the pending project plans of ABC Co. or keep quiet about it. On one hand is his obligation as an employee of ABC and, on the other is his concern and loyalty for his brother and his family. If he doesn’t tell his brother, then Owen may not accept the current offer he has on his house. This offer will clearly be higher than any offer he may receive after the adult entertainment store is built because the value of his home will drop significantly. If he does tell Owen, then he is not being loyal to his place of...

...Business Portfolio and Presentation • No Name BUS/211 February 9, 2015 The business I will be writing about is a supper and entertainment restaurant, which operates in both the morning and the evening. The entertainment side would offer live music by a featured band on certain nights that has a small following with potential to grow. The night will feature music by a DJ that will play contemporary music the popular hits that are on all of the radio stations now. The entertainment will feature a comedian as well on the weekend nights Friday and Saturday for a change of pace, different from standard weekend establishments. As the entertainment side starts to grow, we would slowly start to expand the growth of the menu by introducing certain items on the respected entertainment night. Depending on the response from the patrons of the menu items, this will determine what we should be adding or what will not. When we conclude the research with menu items that work, we would then make the move toward a daytime set up with lunch menu items. The lunch introduction would give the restaurant an over all well rounded look with day and evening service. This is a great business because there are no surprises with profitability. The profitability of the restaurant is determined by evaluating the intake at the door, the food and beverages on a daily basis. The profit from the restaurant is determined after one has come even with his or her initial investment of...

...Written Assignment: Becton Dickinson: Ethics and Business Practices (A) By David Pachner Becton Dickinson’s stance on gifts, entertainment, and conflicts of interest is generally thorough and easy to understand. However, it does require tweaking, especially in terms of its application to cultural differences. While I believe a uniform global policy is important, the fact is that cultures differ in regards to how they do business. As one manager points out, “a gold pen that would be appropriate in the U.S. environment would be an insult in Japan.” L.S., Paine, Becton Dickinson: Ethics and Business Practices (A), (p. 10). As Trevino and Nelson explain in their book Managing Business Ethics, in Japan “giving gifts is considered to be an important point of relationship building.” (p. 402). Accordingly, I believe it would be appropriate for some of the terms to differ depending on the country in question. While the language of the policy could remain the same, a subsection could be included to specify how much money is appropriate to spend on a gift in that particular country. The same could be done for entertainment. While the BD Business Conduct and Compliance Code stipulates “you should not entertain lavishly” (Paine, p. 18), it does not go in to detail about what is considered lavish. This is where a subsection could be inserted to give the reader a more specific idea of BD’s expectations. For example, the Unites States version might read something like “When taking a supplier...

...Code of Conduct Preface “Don’t be evil.” Googlers generally apply those words to how we serve our users. But “Don’t be evil” is much more than that. Yes, it’s about providing our users unbiased access to information, focusing on their needs and giving them the best products and services that we can. But it’s also about doing the right thing more generally – following the law, acting honorably and treating each other with respect. The Google Code of Conduct is one of the ways we put “Don’t be evil” into practice. It’s built around the recognition that everything we do in connection with our work at Google will be, and should be, measured against the highest possible standards of ethical business conduct. We set the bar that high for practical as well as aspirational reasons: Our commitment to the highest standards helps us hire great people, build great products, and attract loyal users. Trust and mutual respect among employees and users are the foundation of our success, and they are something we need to earn every day. So please do read the Code, and follow both its spirit and letter, always bearing in mind that each of us has a personal responsibility to incorporate, and to encourage other Googlers to incorporate, the principles of the Code into our work. And if you have a question or ever think that one of your fellow Googlers or the company as a whole may be falling short of our commitment, don’t be silent. We want – and need – to hear from you. Who Must Follow Our Code...

...animal-based research and testing methods continue to fail legitimate human needs, while new discoveries in the field of alternatives have led to new and improved techniques that do not involve live animals. While many people would like to think animal cruelty no longer exist, what people fail to realize is that it is still happening all over then world today. The treatment of animals is completely unethical. Ethics is defined as, the study of moral standards and how they affect conduct. We live in a world governed by ethics and the concept or right and wrong. This is why animal cruelty in today society is so unreal. The fact animals are still regarded as a product rather then living breathing creatures is morally wrong. Unfortunately our morals don't extend to animals. Although many people claim that they are against animal cruelty they still see animals as forms of entertainment, clothing, and experiments which is complete unethical. Animals are not ours to use. One form of animal cruelty that many people do not realize is animal entertainment. Animal entertainment is a multibillion dollar industry. Animals are constantly used in Circus, Zoos, and Bull fights. We enjoy a show while these animals are suffering. Animals are taken from their homes and forced to live in tiny replicas of their natural habitats. What people do not realize is that animals do not like being...

...FACTS Luke is currently an employee at ABC where all communication he receives is confidential at his work force. He has been assign to a project that involves developing an adult entertainment retail store in a local neighborhood. Luke knows for a fact, that when the news goes viral, property value around the area will decrease significantly. On the other hand, Luke has a close brother that lives in the same neighborhood where the retail store is expecting. His brother Owen has been considering selling his house, where he has received an “okay” current real estate market price but still debating if it is a good idea. ISSUE In this situation, Luke is stuck between whether he should consider letting his brother Owen, know about the real estate market after his company plans to go public about the adult entertainment retail store, or should he keep it confidential. In this case, Luke has run into an ethical issue where he has a “conflict of interest” and a situation of “breach confidentiality.” Utilitarianism One approach Luke can consider basing his decision on is the utilitarian approach. The utilitarian view asks, “What preference does more good than harm to stakeholders?”(online lecture) According to the principle of utility, an ethical decision should maximize benefits to society and minimize harms (Trevino & Nelson, 40). Luke must make a decision considering the corresponding benefits and harms of his company and of his brother Owen. Discussing the confidential...

...Hospitality is the relationship between the guest and the host, or the act or practice of being hospitable. This includes the reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers. Etymology The word hospitality derives from the Latin hospes, meaning "host", "guest", or "stranger". Hospes is formed from hostis, which means "stranger" or "enemy" . Current usage In the West today hospitality is rarely a matter of protection and survival, and is more associated with etiquette and entertainment. However, it still involves showing respect for one's guests, providing for their needs, and treating them as equals. Cultures and subcultures vary in the extent to which one is expected to show hospitality to strangers, as opposed to personal friends or members of one's in-group. Hospitality ethics is a discipline that studies this usage of hospitality. Global concepts Pakhtuns The Pakhtun people of South-Central Asia, predominant in the all provinces of Afghanistan have a strong code of hospitality. They are a people characterized by their use of an ancient set of ethics, the first principle of which is milmastiya or "hospitality". The general area of Pakhtunistan is also nicknamed The Land of Hospitality. Classical ethic'' world To the ancient Greeks, hospitality was a divine right. The host was expected to make sure the needs of his guests were seen to. The ancient Greek term xenia, or theoxenia when a god was involved, expressed this ritualized guest-friendship...

...Ethics In Entertainment Ethics in entertainment is the most hard to define of what is right and wrong and with the invention of the Internet celebrities and politicians have become global celebrities. With this new era celebrities have come to influence the entire world on topics about health, war, and even come to run for political office. The purpose for this paper is to show how celebrities influence the 21st Century and go way beyond what is expected. A few examples of celebrities involved in politics are Arnold Swarchenegger a major actor in the movie industry that ran for governor of the state of California. Which raises the question did he use his fame and popularity to gain the office or was he qualified for the position. Another famous actress is Angolina Jolie; involved with the United Nations as a goodwill ambassador recently she reached the island of Haiti. She was given a tour of the city and then held a press conference where she said “Every day, the UN, governments, NGOs [non-governmental organizations] and local organizations are providing more people with protection, food, water, shelter and health care, yet the needs are still enormous and the displacement could last a decade,” {text:bibliography-mark} . The question here is do governments believe that by putting famous people in places where help is needed help will be given by the people who follow that celebrity. Major cause of this phenomenon in which celebrities have come to gain such power is the...

...I. Paper I (Part 1)What is Ethics? There are many input from different perspective on ethics …the following are some input on ethics:-"Ethics has to do with what my feelings tell me is right or wrong." "Ethics has to do with my religious beliefs." "Being ethical is doing what the law requires." "Ethics consists of the standards of behavior our society accepts." "I don't know what the word means." The meaning of "ethics" is hard to pin down, and the views many people have about ethics are shaky and I think ethical is clearly not a matter of following one's feelings as feelings frequently deviate from what is ethical. And being ethical is also not the same as following the law even the law is often incorporated with ethical standards. I think ethics are also depends on the values of his /her background from family and how they are being educated and value in their daily life. Those values will be influenced by their parents, their peers, and friends and if being at work, those values are the corporation value. Some corporation set ethical policy and employees would then follow the set of policy to perform their role and once being adopted, the value of ethics will be reflected in their daily lives as well. Besides, being taught during the course of education and how the overall society being performed could also influence their values and ethical standard in life...What, then, is ethics? Ethics is two things-- ethics refers to well set up standards of right & wrong...
