In Tunica County, our students are suffering tremendously. EVERY student in Tunica County has been failed in a big way. Mississippi Department of Education found the district in violation of a number of accreditation standards and state and federal laws. Six of eight of those standards allow the commission to withdraw the district's accreditation status, Paula Vanderford, director of MDE's accreditation office, told board and commission members. Vanderford laid out findings from an investigative audit that ranged from an alleged rape on the high school campus that went unreported to insufficiencies in the district's special education department and a failure to keep sensitive student records confidential. (Royals, Clarion-Ledger) Just this statement alone speaks volumes of the disservice students of Tunica County have suffered. One of the many topics that should be discussed to help Tunica County just get a passing grade, math assessment and curriculum. In Grade 3 Math, instruction should focus on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100; (2) developing understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions (fractions with a numerator of 1); (3) developing understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of area; and (4) describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes. Tunica County third grade students scored slightly below average on a recent statewide assessment of reading readiness, with 79 percent achieving a passing score of 926 or above. More than 30 third graders will not promote to the fourth grade. This terrible and lack of effort at home and school. (Taylor, Brooks) In the elementary schools, they have IEPs for the challenged students. Tunica County is understaffed and overwhelmed. They had two certified special education teachers and one of them quit after three months. During my research on third grade assessment and curriculum, I found the article, “THE POSTIVE IMPACT OF PERSONAL GOAL SETTING ON ASSESSMENT.”
This action research is a quantitative study of personal goal setting and how it affects the academic performance of third grade students on weekly Math, Reading, and Language Arts assessments in a proactive effort to increase individual performance on standardized tests. The students' weekly performance was indicative of their expected performance on the standardized test. Each student set a personal goal for each weekly assessment based on their past grades and level of understanding. The students charted their performance, noting if they met the individualized, targeted goals. Their performance average was compared on the weekly assessments three weeks prior and following the personal goal setting. The study found personal goal setting to be a strong motivator for increasing student performance on assessments and self-efficacy (Smithson, M. (2012). THE POSTIVE IMPACT of PERSONAL GOAL SETTING ON ASSESSMENT. Canadian Journal of Action Research, 13(3), 57-73.) I think this article can help any teacher in any subject area. It is a great model to follow with positive reinforcement and positive outcomes. My second article called “The Relationship of Peer Collaboration on Third Grade Student Math Performance,” describes how peer collaboration provides increase in academic performance. The purpose of this study was to provide statistical evidence to demonstrate that peer collaboration on math homework increases academic performance in math. This study examined the benefits of peer collaboration on two unit tests on multiplication. It compared the results of students who worked collaboratively on homework and those who did not. The null hypotheses in the study stated that there were no significant differences in performance between children who work collaboratively in small groups and those who work individually at the .05 level of significance. The entire study took six weeks. The subjects of this study included eighteen eight and nine year old third graders. The class included one child with a learning disability and five talented and gifted students showing various levels of intelligence in the class. Seventeen of these students were recommended from past teachers to learn at third-grade level mathematics and one student was recommended at a second grade level. The control group for this research project consisted of children who worked on their math homework alone. The experimental group consisted of children who worked in collaborative groups of three or four students. The researcher used a paired sample t-test, since all students experienced the experimental factor and control factor, to evaluate the unit test scores of students who worked collaboratively and those who did not. This test was given at the end of each chapter on multiplication. The researcher used the Scott-Foresman-Addison Wesley Assessment Sourcebook for the tests. Based on these results from six weeks of testing and study, the researcher retains the hypothesis there was no significant difference in academic success between students who worked collaboratively and those who did not. The results from this research were beneficial to the ongoing research of peer collaboration in the classroom. Peer collaboration can be effective when used to as one teaching tool instead of the only teaching tool. While peer collaboration is useful to some students, it is not for all students. Therefore, peer collaboration did not show significance at the .05 level in this study (Wilgus, B. P. 2002, July 1. The Relationship of Peer Collaboration on Third Grade Student Math Performance.) I have chosen this article as an alternative way of learning math. Every student learns differently and at different paces. In my experience in education and life, if it gets the job done, by all means continue. As a student myself in the past and now, I have to read it, hear it and see it to fully understand everything. My daughter can get it as soon as you teach it. She just has a knack for learning. One of my nieces is an average student who if she puts forth a little more effort, she would get better grades. While my youngest niece is somewhat challenged. She learns at a slower pace but she eventually gets it. As a teacher, there are an average 16 to 24 students during a class session. Tunica County is in violation of 26 out of 31 state accrediting standards. Currently, three other districts in the state of Mississippi that are under conservatorship: Aberdeen, Claiborne and Leflore. Almost as a state, educators are failing students. The now former Superintendent Steve Chandler ran Tunica County District into the ground. He reportedly fired some female educators because they would not date or sleep with him and some female educators slept with him to maintain their job security. Steve Chandler has been audited and the audit found 1) Extensive problems with the district’s special education program. 2) Some teachers have no license on file, and the district relies on long-term substitutes because teachers resigned during the school year. 3) Missing records to show some 2014 seniors passed required tests, though they graduated. 4) Middle school students received no grades for the first nine weeks of 2014-2015. 5) Cafeteria employees ordered extra food that couldn’t be accounted for, even as the school lunch program was running a $300,000 deficit. The district said it would change locks and install cameras. 6) A need to repay some federal money because staff members were assigned duties not allowed under federal programs. There was a report that criticized Chandler for never reporting to the state an alleged rape at Rosa Fort High School in 2014. The district has also faced criticism over a sexual harassment case. Last month, personal student data, including health and discipline records, were posted openly on the district’s website. This guy was wrong for any institution. Now Tunica County will be taken over by the state. Steve Chandler was not the only educator that let the students of TCSD down, he had help. TCSD has help and the students, community and parents will do their part in pursuing success. In conclusion, third grade math assessment and curriculum play a major role in goal setting. A teacher tries to help and touch every student’s life in a positive manner.
