Ethos is ethical appeal. Ethical appeal basically means the credibility of the speaker or writer. Ethos can make your argument more appealing because the readers, or audience, know that the information given isn’t fake. One can bring ethos to their argument automatically just from their title. For example, King George VI’s speech, given in 1939 the 3rd of September, declaring Britain was at war with Germany already has ethos because of his title as king. His title as king allowed him to speak of war and for no one to doubt him because he is king and wouldn’t lie or joke on such a matter to his citizens. Not everyone can have automatic ethos so most appeal to ethos by having to build up their credibility and trustworthiness to their audience or readers. Whether they persuade you with negative or positive emotional appeal, it is still pathos. Richard Nixon’s speech given in 1952, known as The Checkers Speech, is a prime example of using pathos. “It was a little cocker spaniel dog...And our little girl Tricia, the six-year-old, named it ‘Checkers’” (Richard Nixon, The Checkers Speech). Now let me make it clear this was to defend himself against allegations of inappropriate use of campaign funds. A little dog has really nothing to do with this, but he mentioned it anyways and the people loved it. The people put aside these allegations just because of the little mention of a dog. Anyone that watches or watched TV on a daily basis would have, most likely, seen those commercials of the shelters for animals and/or the starving African children. These commercials use sad music and short clips of animals or children looking sad to make you call the toll-free number to donate whatever amount they are asking for. They tug at your emotions of seeing sad little dogs and cat to make you donate which is one of the best examples of the use of

The Greek philosopher Aristotle divided the means of persuasion, appeals, into three categories--Ethos, Pathos, Logos.
