Eurasian milfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) is an evergreen perennial aquatic plant native to Europe, Asia, and northern Africa, and was accidentally introduced to the Chesapeake bay in the 1940's. Milfoil has a rooted base that grows best in sandy mud in stagnant to slow moving rivers, creeks, and lakes. Fresh water is preferred by milfoil, though brackish water is also tolerated. This plant grows best in quiet, protected areas with depths of about one to four meters as well. If the waves and/or currents are too strong, Eurasian milfoil cannot survive.
